M4A3E8 Sherman
Posted by jagdtiger1944 on Monday, February 22, 2010 12:19 AM

Here is another wip I am doing. It is the DML E8 Sherman Thunderbolt kit, but I am not doing the Thunderbolt.

Here is after construction:

Here is after paint. I used Tamiya olive green and the highlights were made by mixing in Tamiya yellow green.

And here is where I am now. First I painted some areas with Vallejo olive green to create tonal variations. Then I used Tamiya clear to gloss it, then decaled it, and sealed it again.

Let me know what you think. I am also trying to find a stowage set for this one if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Looking veeeeery nice too, just like the Tiger. Fantastic work   jagdtiger1944.

Check out Legends Productions for some stowage sets. I have bought some of their kits before ( mainly figures) and their work is very good. Here is a link...might be just what you want....Smile

It looks so far so good. Why are some parts in different shade of green?

Thanks for the link and comments Boomer. I will be checking it out and probably getting something. They do make nice stuff.

MM, thanks. The different shades of green are mainly to create contrast to draw attention to different parts. It is a form of the modulation style, although I can not call it a true color modulation. The difference will become less obvious as the weathering progresses.

I'm not much into Shermans but this one is looking good so far. Looking forward to  seeing how it turns out.

Thnx for posting your pics.  May I point out a few areas you might want to fix?  The rectangular slab and the lift rings on the rear quarters of the engine deck should not splay outwards. They both were perpendicular with the ground, not with the angle of the engine deck quarter.

Also, those four notches on the rear bulkhead were meant to fit spare tracks with the M4A3 VVS model.  The M4A3E8 directions forget to tell you to fill them in.  Slather some putty on those.

Here's a tiny nitpick: you might want to check the placement of the sledge. From pictures, I think it's mounted closer to the rear edge.

Hope this helps

Roy, thanks for pointing those things out to me. I should have signed up sooner to show my build so you could've pointed them out sooner. This is my first Sherman, but probably not my last, so I will chalk those up to the learning curve. The only reason I say that is because I am planning this stowage set from Legends:

http://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?item_no=LF1116

so those areas that you pointed out will be covered up.Now about the holes, great eye by the way since I did not do a full back shot, I will have to check the instructions and see if I left off rear mud flaps because they are there in my reference photos. If so I will add them on, if not, then I will fill the holes. Thanks again for your expertise.

Rob, I am like you, but this Sherman just caught my eye. I like the lines of the turret, and it is a fun build so far. Rick, thank you also for taking the time to comment.

I noticed that there are some parts in your painted model that has a different shade of green. Why is that?

Roy is our resident shermaholic so I wont try to comment on details....

Paint in OD...there are many thoughts but the closest to WWII OD for 1/35 is PolyScale OD 505388. I use that normally as the base color and then use Tamiya OD XF62, mixed 80/20 with Tamiya XF4 Yellow Green and for a third and even darker tone, straight XF62.

The darker highlight tones are used on the raised areas and edges to get the contrast.

There is an article this month in FSM about dressing up OD. Also numerous articles from many different modelers on tonal variation.
