T-34/85 Model 1944 - FINISHED

Not wanting to burn myself on my latest craze...

I"M BACK

Big Smile

Dragon T-34/85 that was gonna be a speed build to be ready for Amps east on Sat.  Well... way unlikely that's happening.  But progress none the less.  Not the best Dragon kit I've done so far.  Part of the back end had a questionable fit.  The road wheels were off register so there where steps on 2 side of the tire that was a real SOB to sand out.  And flash.  I can't recall if I have ever had flash on a DML kitTongue Tied  Not big flash but lots of little bits and in the hardest places to get it cleaned out.

Anyway... Undercarriage all done.  after getting tracks assembled and glued, ala the Doog, tissues balls pushed in for the sag and the blocks taped down tight to the side of the tracks will guaranty that if it come to pass a judge ever sights down the side, nothing will be wonky.

This will be 100% OOB.

Curious to see how this one comes out. I've got a Zvezda T-34/85 that I just can't bring myself to use some slick aftermarket on (friuls, metal barrel). Been looking for a Dragon at a reasonable price for awhile, but no dice. Maybe at the Austin show this weekend.

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

On Deck:  1/350 HMS Dreadnought

Wingnut, nice start. I have that one in my stash and will watch your progress for any heads up I need on teh build.

Doogs, I built  that Zvezda one some time back. At the very least, get some AM tracks. If you dont want to spend on Fruils, some MK, Maquette, or AFV Club ones. The kit ones are just too dang stiff to get that T-34 look.

About time you get back to where you belong mister. LOL

Nice choice. I just took some pics of a T-34/85 at Evergreen Air Museum over the weekend, so I'll see if I can post some pics.

Yeah, my thoughts have kind of been 1) Get Dragon /85. 2) Use friuls and cool metal barrel on Dragon kit. 3) Jack the magic tracks of whatever and use on the Zvezda.

Now that sounds like a good plan!Hmm Get a good kit, some add on stuff for it, and dress up a mediocre one with the leftovers.

Thanks for all the nice welcome backs.  I feel like KotterWink

I looked up the kit at PMMS and they say it's based on the 1997 kit #6066.  The age my account for some of the flash I am finding.  Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad really.  Likely more that I am just not used to finding it on the Dragon kits. And as I think back in my short armor "career" I tended to go for the new releases.

Doogs I also like that plan but if you wanna buy one without the metal barrel I don't plan to use mine.  So PM your addy and I will send it your way.

Thanks Bill.  I think I am going to have be contradictory from now on... feet on the ground and head in the cloudsWink

So far I have not run into too much more flash that is bothersome.  Fit has been good but not without issue.  The back end of the upper half needed some work to fit and the assigned space. There art some "Tamiya-esque" spaces under the fenders that are going to need to be blanked off.  The area under the screen over the engine compartment has a great view of nothing.  Judges hate thatWink so that will be blanked off too.

A piece of tape was used to mark out he spacings given on the instruction sheet for the little handles(?) on the back of the turret.  Time was spent on the turret getting the "seams" to look the part and to make the welds on the upper deck to look less pretty.

Nice idea using the tape as a guide for attaching tie down point. Yes I will definitely have to copy that.

Hey Marc, great start.

I don't mean to highjack the thread, but if you don't mind I took some pics this past weekend of the T-34 at the Evergreen Air Museum in McMinnville Oregon. Cool place if you're in the neighborhood. they have a neat space museum also.

and a T-55

Funny how small they look when you actually get up to them. Kind of like the B-17. Not nearly as big as I envision it.

Posting great pics like that can hardly be considered hijacking.  I never noticed the seams oo the exhaust pipes.  Do you recall if the are top and bottom or just along the one side?

No I didn't. From the pics it looks smooth on the inside bottom, so I'm assuming the seams were only at the top.

You'll notice one of them has a fairly smooth texture while the other has a rough texture on the turret. There was sadly no info on these vehicles. One of them had two air vents on top, the other one. I don't know if one is an early version or if it was factory specific. Sad

Cool, Marc---a cool kit and it looks like it's coming together without much ado.

I'll be curious to see what you do with the finish? Everyone seems to have their own take on Russian Green. Smile

There are several 34/85 walk aorund on Prime Portal.  One of the looks like it could have been the basis for this kit. So many of the parts look exaclty the same.  The pipes have a weld around the circumfernsce instead down the top.

The casting texture isn't bad at all on the kit but JEEZ... some of them have some crazy texture

Thansk doog.  For the couple of Russin builds I 've done so far I used MM enamel Russian Top Side Green and not one person made a comment good bad or indifferent.  But I am moving toward Tamiya's (yes, againWhistling)  So if anyone knows the Tamiya equivalent I would appreciate the info.

Welcome back Marc!  I am not really a big fan of Russian armor but since you are building, what the heck you got my attention.  Looking forward to see the whole WIP.

And congrats with your Marder in recent FSM issue if I am correct. Beer

Actually, if you are referring to the most recent FSM, that would be Nate's (Nachtflieger's) Marder that made the gallery. I don't recall seeing Marc's in there (although it should be!).

Thanks Boyd.  With that kind of encouragement... maybe I will send it in to FSM.

Except for a few little fiddly bits that need to go on pre-paint, this is the final mock up before that painting session begins.

How were those PE screens to put on? I've read they're a bear.
