Char B1 bis - Dirty Pictures
Posted by wing_nut on Thursday, November 10, 2011 7:48 AM

Bon jour & Guten tag

This is my entry for Eric's (aka Tigerman) "Blitzkrieg in the West (France 1940)"  GB.  he has done a great job getting that build going and it is moving allong quite well.  Lots of build and info. Who could ask for more?

The Tamiya B1 bis came out in '06 and there was quite and there was some excitement about it at the time.  Lots of builds straight away with lots of info availabe as to what needed to be corrected in the kit.  A few things needed to be removed and a few things needed to be added.  There is even a web site devoted to the B1 with tons of photos and a section about this kit and the list of corrections.  That was a big help.

It represents #338, Charente, of 41st BCC, 3rd compagnie, 3rd section.  It is prior to being taken intact by the Germans at which time the commander and driver where killed as they exited the vehicle and the 3 other crewmen were taken prisoner.  Unit marking are masked and painted with the name/numbers being dry transfers.

Thanks for looking.

Bow Down Another stunning build Marc. I really love that camo job.

I concur about this GB, it's been a treasure trove of information on armor that I knew next to nothing on. And, we have a real Frenchman with all his knowledge in the GB as well. Cool That makes it kind of official.

Up to your usual standards Marc, very nice work on the Char. The puzzle-piece camo has always been a favorite of mine and you nailed it perfectly. Beer

Marc, have you ever had the black sharpies turn a dark purple after awhile?

Manny, yup sure have.  Even as I was putting this on of you caught the light and got just the right reflection it looked a bit purpleish.  But inthe end it looked black and it is well sealed under several sealer and weathering coats.  Looking at threads in other forums, quite a few guys used this and all seemd to be pleased.

Thanks KennySmile

Hi, Marc as I said over in the GB, excellent, the best compliment I can probably give is "I'm saving your pics as reference when I get to paint" .

Terry.

Excellent work Marc. The camo is outstanding and the weathering is great. Subtle and not over done obscuring  detail. High marks on all aspects! Thanks for posting

Great work Marc.  I've got one of these that I started a couple of years ago and got to the point of painting, but couldn't figure out how I was going to do the camo, so I stashed it.   Now I think I've got the answer!  Thanks for sharing.

Shame on me for not paying attention.

Terry, Mark, Jeff... thanks for looking in and thanks for the comments.

Terry, using my stuff as a reference?  Kinda of a scary thought. Whistling LOL  But yes, a compliment for sure.

Marc, I almost missed this one and what a shame that would have been. What a treasure you created. The camo work is Outstanding I see so many of these with all kinds of heavy weathering, what you did with the light weathering is not only well done but allows the viewer to truly appreciate the wonderful paint and finish work you did. Nice

Thanks so much for stopping in and saying the nice things you did. Since positing these I have finished a few final details.  I also finished the weathering.  At the point these pics were taken I was considering going a bit further with some mud and also some oil streaks from the constant lubing of the track. I will get some new pics up later.

Finally got to get to the bench again to add some last little parts... tools, straps, gussets for the "rail" behind the turret. What is that for anyway? And finished the weathering. Grease stains from the constant lubing the tracks needed and of course... Mud!

Lovely looking build all round. I do like the effect you have got on the 'bare' metal, the tracks and chain. Very realistic. As for the rail, all i can think of is somthing to hang onto if your sat on top. Can't see any other use for it.

Thgansk so much for all the comments guys.

As far as the rail goes, someone else pointed out that was to prevent the guns barrels from going low enough to shoot their own vehicle in the keaster.

O ye, never thought of that. and it would make sense with such short barrels. And it would explain why the end are angeled.
