Sd.Kfz. 221 ~ Bronco # 35013 and # 35033

Just received these and plan to build them in unison.  The first one will probably be in the Polish Campaign and the sPzB41 on the Eastern front. Started with the lower chassis.  So far it's gone together very well, though there was some clean up needed around the injection spots.  I'll be building as much of the interior as I can before painting it.

Very clean-looking start on these M0J0's...I have the lower one in my stash...seems that they have a full interior and all of the kit-bashing reviews seem to be favorable...

COOL!

I'm looking forward to this with great interest.  I'm almost wrapped-up in my build of the HobbyBoss 223 Funk car for the "Command Campaign" over on Armorama.com - very similar car and kit in many ways, albeit maybe a tad different in detail from those Bronco kits in the lower chassis, and the HB kit comes with real mesh in the rear of the crew compartment (airing the radiator), and a rather complete engine.  The Bronco kits offer some different options, including 2 sets of wheels in one of them!  I have the Bronco 221 w/ sPz.B 41 gun and that's soon to be tackled, so...!

PS: About that 221 w/ sPz.B 41 kit...  I could be wrong here, but I think the kit instructions call for installing the turret seat and pedestal and "ape-hangers".  That modified turret was fixed and, best of my knowledge, those "guts" were removed.  Doing this would also allow better views into that cool interior!

Despite my fervent hopes, Bronco shares a strange failing with HobbyBoss in that this kit (35033) lacks key parts of its interior, just as does the HB 223 Funk kit...  Neither kit has any radio equipment! This is really weird, as the 223 Funk is a RADIO car (so I scratched the entire interior to better match period pics...), AND the Bronco 35033 box - art shows the gunner wearing head-phones... but supplies no radio sets nor antenna for the kit!  Period photos often show these modified 221 carrying radios and rod-antenna.  Go figure!  I plan on adding in these things on mine.

I'm watching with great anticipation!

Manstein -

Thanks for the comment, it has been a clean build so far and I particular look forward to the interior though it's not full having no engine.  I'm sure there are aftermarket parts but I don't want to go that far.

Bob -

I'm glad you're hooked into it as much as I am.  These look like fun kits and it's been fun so far.  Interesting details about the removal of the pedestal and seat.  So if that was removed would the gunner just stand?  I may leave that out for the sake of exposing the interior more as well.  As for the radio, not sure how much mod's I want to do.  I may look around and see if I can find some accessories for radio equipment.

I'll try to post some more soon.

David:

Yes, the gunner would just stand in that space - him and another guy (generally 2 folks back there for this gig, so far as I know, anyways).  And yes, it will open things up for viewing.  Do note that if you delete the pedestal, you should put a round cover-plate on the floor to "cover" its base hole...

Of course, while the kit instructions don't appear to address this, there MUST have been some provisions for ammo for that gun...  The kit does provide a cute little ammo can and rounds, I think - but does not say where to put it?  I would expect that there was more than one or 2 ammo cans stored in the car, so one needs to consider some rack or bin for these.  I anticipate building some sort of rack for ammo cans inside...

As to radios... The radio set would have been in a frame mounted most likely on the left side of the car behind that driver's seat and behind the door-frame.  Of course, for the complete set-up, there would have been maybe both a receiver and a transmitter, head-phones, antenna cable and junction-box (and, externally, the antenna mount and rod), and a power supply.  Most of these rigs also had a loud-speaker hung or mounted somewhere.  It is possible that the car carried only a receiver.  I used the radio and power bits from a Tristar Pz.Kpfw 38(t) interior kit for my 223 funk interior.  - Really nice radio frames and nice radios and bits!   You could as well "borrow" a radio from any of many Dragon kits which may not be showing their commo goods in your build...  The point here being that IF you decide you should have a radio-equipped 221 car, it will be visible if those turret "guts" are left out (even if they are installed, I think...).   Of course, it is probably more than legit to make a frame (styrene rod and strips) and put a wood or plastic "dummy" in, and drape it with a "weather cover" with maybe only a head-phone cord coming out from beneath it...?

Let the builds ROLL!Stick out tongue

Haven't made great progress with this, but the ball is starting to roll again. Some interior shots. I'll have to admit, this kit is a little more overwhelming for me with all of the smaller parts.  There's a lot of detail in this kit.

Painted the floor with MM RAF Dark Green, which I found close to RAL 7009.  It will be hard to tell anyways when it's together.  I then masked with some painters tape and painted the walls white.  I should be making faster progress with this now that I have the 232 out of the way.

Nice contrast between the floor and the hull. Love to see details like this attended to...you might be surprised once you have it all together how much of a difference it makes when looking through the hatches. Wink

I like that armored car on the bottom. Don't see many of those.

Very coolYes---so the floor is a different color than the rest of the interior.  I thought they were mostly left in primer...I was not aware of that...same for tanks?

Manny,

Early war vehicles (especially those constructed pre-war like this one) sported a green primer on the interior floor and engine/transmission components instead of the red oxide that became standard later on. No real clear cut timeline for when red oxide on tank interiors replaced the green but it generally seems to fall around the 1940 period based on observations of actual vehicle restoration comments on different components.

Thanks...funny how when you're actually there you don't notice such things as they seem so unimportant at the time.  All I recall in the bottoms of my command vehicles were mud!

So I've slacked on this, as in I haven't taken any progress shots however I have been working on it.  Sorry to say it's all closed up, not like much of it could be seen anyways.  I'm figuring out this airbrushing thing.  I used to put mostly paint in the cup and a few drops of thinner.  From reading Finescale and from members of my chapter I have learned people use a much more thinned concentration of paint.  I used a 50/50 mixture for the pre-shade coat of black.  I will do the same ratio with the dark gray base and build up the paint job in layers.  I really look forward to the results, the first coat looks so good and smooth, such a big improvement from my past kits with their thicker paint jobs.

Nice to see this one's still moving along. The trick with airbrushing is indeed the thinner-to-paint ratio. Much easier to control the application when you have properly thinned paint (just don't thin too much or you'll have a different problem!). Yes

Yeah, I'm getting this airbrushing figured out Bill.  I'm still new to this hobby. about two years in, but I am pleased with my progress. I've got her in dark grey now, next step will be some brown camouflage for the two tone.  Don't mind the visor on the turret, in attempt to clean it from the tree I took off a little too much.

Thanks guys.

Well, I got around to getting some time on the airbrush so I gave it some brown camouflage. I'm going to try to get this thing done, I've put it off too long.

Thanks, this kit is all out of the box.  What you may see is the injection spots in the middle which may appear as bubbles.  I painted with Model Master Chrome Silver, nothing special.

Nothing special? They look great! I thought you had bought one of these aftermarket kits with lenses and reflectors made out of thin metal.

I'm going to get myself some of that Model Master Chrome Silver! Big Smile

After breaking almost every fragile piece off during weathering and getting the wheels on, I am happily finished with this project.
