DML Sexton II WIP

I like Tamiya NATO Black...has that faded look built in....I love this Sexton, I'm going to have to get one.

Thanks Karl and Mr Color is Lacquer based, I just wasn't thinking, Tamiya doesn't brush well to start with.

I maybe old but young enough to learn from my mistakes.

Well now my tail is waggin' like a doog's should, looking at that paint job! Yeah, that looks great, seriously.

That's really bizarre that the Tamiya paint reacted that way with that chosen thinner?! What is the base of that thinner? From what I"ve experienced, Tamiya responds well to water, rubbing alcohol, and laquer thinner, especially, if you want a smoother finish. (Airbrush only or you'll melt your plastic!) And of course, their own thinner brand.There must be some kind of laquer component to it? You probably don't want to brush laquer paint---it's best sprayed, judging from my experience in Auto modeling.

I'll always give you my honest opinion, Tony. It gets me in trouble sometime, but hey--what price to improve if you can't take criticism?

Karl the paint was Tamiya with Mr Color leveling thinner and it has been four days since I painted the base color. No BIG deal but I won't try that again, I should have know better.

Is this an improvement? Yes/No

"Melt thorugh to the brown"? What kind of paint is that, Tony? Enamels? Weird! Never heard of that before...was your brown coat freshly-applied? I could see where the solvents would have blended them then.

In any case, just get some acrylic black then, and maybe ligthen it with some white or gray and you should be able to thin it just a bit to make it go on smoothly---I hear Vallejo goes on like buttah--and no one will be any wiser. You wouldn't have to treat it any differently than your base coat; in fact, it would most likely be even more resistant to washes, etc.

Bill the paint is not too thin, what it did was melt through to the brown. I should have shot a light clear sealing coat on first but didn't think of it at the time. The more I worked with it the worse it got.

I didn't have the end result on my mine, all I was wanting to do was get the scheme to look ok. I never really have a plan and just work with what i've got as I go along.

Bill's got a point, Tony, about imagining it after weathering, but I would probably fill in the spots a bit more opaquely. I don't think I'd go for a full-on death-metal BLACK, but with some diluted paint, you should be able to get a nicer opacity to it without going full-on "Night on Bald Mountain"! 

I think that you will regret it later if you leave it kinda sloppy-ish like that. Besides, you can always weather it with a little bit of grayish clouding, and even do a sponge-chipping of that brown color to make it look chipped and worn. That would be my way of approaching it.

The key here Tony is to be a little forward-looking and try to visualize it after you weather it...will the paint be filled in enough with the layering effects to produce the faded/work look you're after? My first reaction to it was that it seemed thin in spots...but I've used this same technique/approach along with the weathering to produce some neat results...so it all depends on where you intend for it to end up! I like the pattern and how you've laid it down between the two colors, very appealing I must say.

Not since New Years Tony unfortunately. Lots of stuff has kept me busy including the final stretch of my MBA program...I'm on the last class now and it's set to finish up on 3/28, the day after my birthday ironically, so I should be able to get back to the bench starting in April if all things work out as they should!

Karl the brown is UK SCC2 a coffee with milk color. They also had a rich chocolate brown.

The SCC2 in the picture is a little green to me and the black camo is referred to as Mickey Mouse ears.

Yep it's a Bronco Archer, lots of detail to play with.

Tony, I've got a crappy internet connection up here in Oslo, Norway, so I probably missed something, but what's the deal with that brown base color--IS it brown?!? Is it being laid down to act as the first color in a masked camo scheme like on the box depiction?  Looks cool, and the detail painting looks groovin' too.

I like that GB build too---what's that, an Archer?

No I haven't given up  on the Sexton I just had to get started on a short time limited GB on another site.

I'm far enough ahead now that I can get back to my other two projects for awhile.

Looks like the result af a VERY steady hand. Nice work on the driver's station, for sure.

Fellows with the high humidity and rain the compressor is over in the corner, I had to resort to doing it the old fashion way.

Sheesh, Tony---that looks AWESOME! That little compressor hiccup doesn't look like it slowed you down one bit?!

You would definitely need a steady hand Tony to do those dials plus a good optivisor as well.
