Holy guacamole!! The detailing, the paint, the dinosaurs, DID YOU SEE THE SIZE OF THAT CHICKEN??!!!! This build made my head explode

I'm still amazed when I see stuff like this with the sheer size of these projectiles, they sure thought bigger was better...The brass looks really good Wayne, how are you going to display the beast?

assuming i load ammo from a gondola. a long skinny base. i have to figure out how to break the base for transport and connect it for contests. i think i have a long enough wall with low shelving. it would fit on the mantle but, while my frau of 40 years supports my hobby(s), she doesn't want it in the living room. if not in my study than the bunker.

haven't done anything on the K-5 but here are some practice Velociraptors. i am using Iwata ComArt for base colors and playing with oil painting, washes, and filters for effects. i need to find some 1/35 modern USA helmets for a diorama. first one was the one i sold. a friend offered me $10 and it took a second at regionals (there were only 2 and the 1/24 Spinosaurus kinda overshadowed it. fortunately that guy is my friend so i have plenty of dino help)

ammo and i have a 4th box.the rounds are split between smooth (for normal barrels)  and ribbed (for deep rifled barrels). i have a set out so i can use it for a mold to cast more if needed. i can use the smooth and put the ribbed on a pallet under a tarp.the rounds are painted Vallejo metallic black which i will tone down a bit with some pastels.  there were large and small powder charge bags (all are the same here). i will wash them to highlight the detail. the brass is the end piece and the minimum charge. the gray canisters i think can hold  the powder bags which would make sense. a max range on the ammo cart would be the projectile, 2 large and 1 small powder bag and the brass end piece.

like the couplers, now you know more about K-5 ammo than you will ever need.

ps from a previous post i got the hull masked and painted on the DDFH (DD From Hell). now to build 1/350 twin 20mm which have 10 parts each.

hey DOOG i hadn't thought of that and won't do it with the K-5 BUT i do have some modern towed 105s and 155s. would that be sci-fi, artillery, humor? (rhetorical). they really are 3-4 feet tall so shorter than in the movie.  sounds like something from Harry Turttledove's WORLD AT WAR? series. i also have a couple of T-rexs in 1/35. uhmmmmmmmmmm?

INRE last post, i did clean off a station and pulled out DD that has to be done by mid June. looks better than i thought given it will be cases on a shelf so not going to have contest scrutiny. no excuse for building poorly but it does mean some little boggers won't be seen.

got 12 powder bags painted gray white and 12 canisters german gray. when they dry will paint black rounds and brass end casings. (ran out of clips). also painted ammo cart german gray instead of yellow for some contrast. here is the elevation mechanism set together. going to be a lot of individual priming and painting. ig it looks a little rough remember 1. i will clean it up some more, 2. all of this inside the carriage won't be seen, especially down in travel mode and 3. i'm assuming they would leave the inside gray to conserve paint. pity as this is a pin wash dream.

ON A SIDE NOTE. vallejo paints nicely but i find, even after cleaning, if i let the airbrush sit for a couple of days it gets stiff. had to field strip mine today. easy enough to run anything like water though it each day to prevent that.

thanks all. am working on the elevation mechanism. probably doing more filling than necessary but this won't make june regionals so i have the time . it's weird having parts so much bigger than shown in the instructions. lots of sanding tonight and lots of individual priming and painting before assembly. this may be on hold until mid June. have a DD, TYPE XXVII, firetruck,  KV-2 dio, dinosaur  and SPA to finish up for regionals.

That thing is HUGE... it would take all of my displaying shelve for life.

It is coming along very good, I cant believe the number of small parts and the painting looks perfect.

Please, please dont abandon this build, dont prive us from it. It would be like watching a good movie and stopping by the middle.

Two foot of barrel, it not so much a model as it is a movie prop. Wayne your doing a fantastic job with that monster of a kit.

Can't believe how big that barrel is!

i hit a wall about 3 weeks ago so haven't done much. really putzing around with a number of builds but no focus to finish. i know all of us have this happen from time to time.  the K-5 may be on hold until mid-june as i have a local regionals coming up and have other things to finish. here is the heavy flatcar. i will build a loading dock at rear and along back side but am thinking abandoned, rusty, weed infested with some junk on the bed. maybe a critter or 2 will appear as well or parts to a TYPE XXVII or luft 46 thingie. lots of fun with oil washes and dry brushing with more to come.

speaking of critters here is a six pack of 1/35 primed velociraptors. these are going to be fun to paint and my mind is awhirl with dioramas. have to investigate how to preserve real plants for the dioramas. just trying something really different to reignite the spark.

and the K-5 barrel is coming along. popped a seam but easily fixed. this plastic melts easier with testors glue but that is working to my advantage. still have some wiring to finish up near the breech which has put me off for a bit.  KV-2 in background is just for scale but will go in a thrown track abandoned dio for regionals. will add some 37mm and 50mm shell dents. picked up some new stuff to make bases. yes that is 2 feet long,

That's funny. You are seeing shadows from a hasty lighting job and pics just to post some updates. I plan on doing the lighter overspray tonight. Going to add the red brown to the Kubelwagen next. lighten it a bit with some dark yellow so it isn't as stark. that is my experiment painting build and i have spares in the stash for it and Schwimmwagen.. i will add the rails to the crane platform and generator car tonight . the crane itself won't be mounted until later as it covers the pin for rotating the assy.

the trucks are ready to overspray and camo. the trucks are sitting on a foot long section of track.

if you  have build artillery or anti-tank guns you  familiar with building breeches for the guns. to give you an idea of the size here are a couple of pics of the breech.

question for you RR guys. The Dragon kits have only 1 coupler for the rail car with just the big hook on the other end. the Trumpeter has 2 one on each end. which is correct?

More boogers to fix.

Gondola took a 3rd in local "out of your comfort zone" contest. While looking at ways to repair damage to an old partially built Dragon heavy flat car, i found 2 Dragon gondolas i forgot i had. My RR stash is getting (already is) insane and i haven't even looked at armored railcars for armored trains. oh and scored an OTS Dragon recovery TIGER in the raffle

found some boggers on the side of the trucks where the top attached to the very thin ledge on the bottom. did some sanding and had some sanding marks so worked on them, did some white glue filling and sanding. still see some and it looks a tad rough but now the scraps are from tree branches and add character. this pick shows the contrast Karl was talking about. the kubelwagen was painted the same base coat as the truck and generator, than oversprayed, perhaps a little heavier than i wanted, with a mix of DY and a lot of dirty white. apologies for the optical illusion thing with the wood slats.

Karl - The first attempt on the Kubelwagen was mixed success. It seems I still have to figure out the right thinning and pressure with Vallejo for that. OTOH since i had some issues, it was easy to mix paints in the airbrush and really lighten the DY which worked. I would post pics bit it really doesn't show in pictures but it is much lighter. I have to remember washes will darken it a bit too.

Duster - Lots of experience making mistakes. Things that would have me swearing are now merely annoying, except for really stupid stuff like dropping a model. Dropped parts, broken parts, even as i start looking for them i am thinking  of a fix. i keep this up and i'll pull out my wooden x-section of USS Constitution.

There were 4 wires that needed bending, guess they couldn't fit them on a sprue. The nail technique is something i use for bending wood planks and deck beams. it tends to work better with something stiffer than this wire but something to consider. WOW just had a brainstorm. I can use this technique to make cargo bed bows for modern trucks. If  plastic soak in hot water, mold and cool, if brass soften it with a torch.

The trucks are primed. The underside is german gray on the assumption they wouldn't waste paint there. like the Gondola, i am not going to spend a lot of time weathering it since NO ONE will be picking the truck up and looking at it, at least not more than once with that hand. a quick misting of red brown and gray mixture. fortunately i could pop the couplers off and brush paint them so they work. Not worried about some overspray except on the ends.

I have found that the larger the model, or the smaller the scale, the more I have to lighten the DY to look convincingly "scale". Not so much with the camo coats so much, but that "dark" Yellow really stands out like a sore thumb. Just my take on it, but you do what pleases ya. :)

Hey Karl I'm going to try the toned down DY overspray on the kubelwagen and than add the toned down camo, If it turns out nicely, i can use it in a diorama. if not i can learn from it and it's not a big lose. Thanks for the suggestions.

One of the couplers fell apart but turned out to be a good thing. They are held together with white glue so i can move them. Turns out i had attached the one coupler  incorrectly but was able to pop the deck and fix it. Both trucks are ready to prime.

cut that with up to 75% white. Spray THAT mixture from an upper, high angle, leaving that base coat of DY under the "shadow areas". Spray the gun so as to leave a "stripe" of unlightened DY under about 10% of the barrel to look like a shadow. Your paint coat will gain a nice "3-D" texture to it and really pop.

Another day another 20 pieces on the rear truck. Karl how would i do what you are suggesting if i am going the add a red brown and green camo pattern. Sounds like i should tone down both colors before airbrushing. at least with Vallejo it's easy to do. I suspect the leaf springs and lower part of the trucks are going to get a misting of grayish brown road grime but not to heavy.I have been studying trains near the house.

normally i would do it and than ask for advice but obviously this is not a typical build and certainly not one to experiment with.
