Thank you Justin and Mike,

Justin, I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the game.  I've been tempted to check it out, but I just don't play many video games anymore.  I'll be sure to check out your build.

Mike, I see what you mean about the seam lines.  From the pictures, I can see them on the A-driver's right arm and the loader's right arm.  I'll give them a little touch up.  Thanks for pointing them out.  Sometimes, a second pair of eyes are a big help.  I've seen your figure threads over in the figure forum.  They probably have the undercutting technique.  I'll check those out again.

Thanks for looking gentlemen,

Chris

I seem to have missed the final reveal somehow, Chris. You did a spectacular job on it! The weathering looks great, and those figures are pretty dang good! My only critique on the figures would be that you need to make sure you clean off all of those mold lines. You missed a few. Other than that, buddy, I hope you got the bug good and hard. Because figures are extrememly fun to paint and they really can make a sub par models look 10X better with some good loooking figures on them.

I am seriously hoping this will not be your last serious effort with figures. You've already got a great start and I really hope you keep going with them.

Get them seams taken care of, look into "undercutting" and you will start making the average Tamiya fig look like a top quality resin cast. It can be done. ;)That's just the beginning of fun with figurines. There are a lot of neat tricks when it comes to painting that will spill over into your model building. You've just opened the door, buddy. Walk on through, and welcome to my world! LOL  :D

That looks really awesome, Chris!  I've been playing world of tanks blitz (the mobil version of the game) and right now my favorite tanks are the M4 Sherman and it's two variants.

I even bought a WOTBLITZ M4 sherman/italeri kit...see my thread, as I just finished it!

Thank you Gentlemen,

I call it my first serious attempt, because I've covered figures in light tan paint before and called it good.  Those figures didn't look at all realistic.  I'll be looking for interesting human subjects to model now.  They were avoided in the past.

Chris, this is that Operation Cobra kit.  I used an Eduard photo-etch set, because I wasn't happy with the kit's light guards.  I also wanted the side skirt hangers.  They were a prominet feature in my one reference pic.

It's a nice kit.  I like the casting texture molded into the hull, transmission cover and turret.  The detail is crisp.  Most of the parts fit together flawlessly.

However, the instructions were untrustworthy, and I had to do some digging in reference books.  One example, the kit had four different parts represting the mounting bolts for the transmission cover, and the instructions didn't indicate the part number.  (PS - the kit provides a wealth of spares, you could almost build a 2nd Sherman).  The kit has three or four main gun barrels in the box.  The one called out in the instructions isn't common to the earliest M4A1's with 76mm guns.  The more appropriate barrel is in the box.  Even with the challenges, it's a great kit.

Your frst attempt at figures?! Wow! Looks great to me, well done on them. And the Sherman. I'll think I'll have to check out those Vallejo flesh tone instructions.

And I have the older, Dragon "Operation Cobra" Sherman in the stash, I've been wanting to work on it for a while... hmm YesYes

Chris the figures look good, really sharp work for your first serious attempt. I love figures on AFVs, to me they look way better than the bland buttoned up look you see so often.

I added some figures to the Sherman.  It was my first serious attempt at painting figures, and I'm happy with how they turned out.  I used a Vallejo face painting set, and the instructions supplied with the set were outstanding.  They were a great help.  The tank commander and loader are from a MiniArt set, and the driver and assistant driver are from a Dragon set.  The figures really add some visual interest to the tank.  I'm glad I gave figures a try.  Maybe I can work it into a diorama.

Thank you TigerII,

The markings are decals supplied with the kit.  It's Dragon's M4A1 Operation Cobra kit.  I was able to find one reference pic and one left side drawing on the web of that specific vehicle.  I can't take any credit for the texture of the metal.  That was all Dragon.  They did an excellent job mimicing the imperfections of metal castings.

Hey Chris,

This is a magnificent Sherman. Very nicely done. I love the camo and the tracks. You did a fine job with the texturing of the metal. I do have one question: The insignias and lettering that you used are they decals or dry transfers? They really bring out the best in that Sherman. Again nice job.

Thank you Bruce,

I didn't have to think long about the shelf placement.  I have a diorama project in mind (it will include the Sherman).  So, then I'll have to build a T-34 for that shelf.

Thanks for looking,

Chris

Great job, Chris! I really like the camo on this Sherman. It looks good next to your Panther!

Thanks Cliff.  I was going for a dusty look with a thin layer of dried mud on the lower surfaces.  It may get hit with more "dust" on the bogies.

Thank You Robert,

Yes, do another Sherman.  We could use more on this forum.

I'm calling this project done, for now.  I'm going to try to use this Sherman in a diorama in the near future.  However, I have to practice figure painting and structures first.

I'm very happy with the way this Sherman turned out.  I don't think my weathering shows well in the pictures, but I'm happy with it.

Chris the build is looking good. The camo pattern looks great. One day I will need to do another sherman tank, It was the first model I ever built as a kid.

Its looking really good, Chris. Seriously good. That Tasco .50 cal is much better than the Tamiya one I just put together for the M-41. She's lookin' dang nice, buddy. :)

I've only been able to make slight progress since I last updated.  It's been a few.  I removed the English antenna, and I thank Roy for spotting that and bringing my attention to it.  The decals were a challenge.  They had to lie over some raised details, and they had to snug into some recessed details.  I had to use a few applications of MicroSol.  I picked a vehicle from the 3rd Armored Division, 33rd Armored Regiment as it entered Belgium in early September 1944.  These markings were available on the kit decal sheet, and I was able to find a reference picture of the left side of the tank.  Weathering will take a while.  I think I'll be playing and experimenting.  Here's how she looks.

Primer black and hull red for the tracks.

I believe there were two types of exhaust deflectors.  One was "framed" and one was "un-framed."  Early 76mm M4A1's seem to have the "un-framed" variety, and that is included in the kit.  The deflectors were fitted because the original exhaust configuration sent the exhaust air directly into the ground.  It stirred up too much dust.

Thank you T26E4 for the info.  I didn't know about the antenna pot.  I will investigate fixing that.  It may not be too late to fix it.  I will be fitting the luggage rack.  I left it off due to a decal that will be going on that back plate.

I have seen the double duckbill track in one of my reference books.  How effective was it in reducing ground pressure?

What you see is the E9 suspension upgrade. A few with this feature made it to the ETO before the end of hostilities. The angled deflector grate at the rear was not a rarity. It's the Barber-Coleman grate, introduced during the 75mm gun tank production of the M4A1s. http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_minutia/sherman_types/m4a1/m4a1.html

Looks good Chris. I noted two construction items you may or may not want to tend to before progressing. 1) the gumdrop shaped item on the left rear turret antenna pot -- is a DML mistake. That's the antenna mount for British radios. You may want to grind that out and simply place a small disc, covering the hole. 2) the three notches along the upper edge of the rear bulkhead -- which were meant for you to install the "luggage rack" --- if you opt not to install it, you probably want to fill those notches with putty. On the real thing, the brackets for the rack were simply bolted onto the cast armor hull -- no notches existed on the actual hull. Hope these help.

Thank you qcarr.

Progress has been slow.  It's been a busy week.  I finished detail painting, I started on the tracks, and I applied a protective gloss coat to get ready for decals and weathering.  The gloss coat is Future floor polish, and it darkened the finish quite a bit.  I'm very happy with the results.  I'll give it at least a couple of days to dry.

Before the gloss

After the gloss coat

I'm going with the narrow tracks (non-duckbill).  I like the tracks.  They required a little bit of trimming, but not much.

The turret ring on this kit is slightly wider than a 23 ml bottle of Tamiya paint.  It's very handy for paining the bottom of the tank and the roadwheels.
