Erick,

Since this is going to be a BYOP (build you own pace!!) group build, I'd say to just fire if off whenever your ready with the site, etc. I think this is really going to be a fun build. Modlers getting together with no pressure of a build date, but still with the incentive to get going! Thanks, again, for the idea and being willing to be the host!

Edog,, Yes I was talking about the start date. I am already in the Dday build and the stug build so I will be deffinately be a building fool. Now throw in on top of the two builds My 2 weeks of active duty time and I will deffinatly be busy. But I think It will be fun.

feldgrau, as long as what? Did you mean a build date? I think there will be an unofficial start date, but it is going to be more like a “start at your leisure” date. I will count you in for now, good to have you aboard.

wipw, I debated buying some after market mesh skirts for my Dragon Pz IV J, but I took a close look at the kit ones and I was fairly impressed. I think I will just touch up a few details. I looked at the Eduard ones and they seemed REALLY good. I almost got them but backed off at the last minute. Hope this helps and doesn’t confuse you.

So the list is something like this now:
myself
renarts
Foster7155
feldgrau
wipw

-Any Ideas as to when the “start at your leisure” date should be?

-Do you guys have any references to add? I will try to start working an a build page this weekend.

-Does anyone have any other ideas for the build?

Edog,, as long as there isn't going to be , and it doesn't sound like there is going to be, put me in on this on for a IVD What the heck It will be a Afrika Korps version. If nothing else I will build it and add my 2cents worth of info when I can.

Drew;

That happened on pretty much all the German tanks. The skirts were just kind of hung on the side of the tank and they'd get ripped off by trees, bushes, etc.

Erick,

I think you can count me in on this one. Especially if it doesn't have a "formal" end time, but is just a build and tell it as you can build. Sounds fun. I'll be doing the DML J. I'd really like to find a set of PE mesh skirts to replace the "nylon" ones included in the kit. Any ideas??

I thought so! Thanks for the reply.

I studied German for five and a half years through high school and into college. But that was more than ten years ago now and I'm getting rusty.

Can anyone tell me why, on many of the Panzer IV kits I see, there are sections of the skirts missing?

Bearing in mind that I've never built a tank kit, and that I no hardly anything at all about WWII German armor: what are schurzen? Are they the side skirts?

I don't know when I'll work on that kit. There are several others in the build pile, so I doubt that I'll take part in the group build. Still, I know where to ask if (when) I need help with the kit. :D

Renarts, you hit exactly the points that I was thinking of. So, it looks like there is only 3 of us interested in a Pz IV group. Personally, I see no problem with such a small group and I’m sure I will be building for a long time, so people can come and go as they like. Any suggestions as to when a “not so official” start date should be?

I think there shouldn't be any crossover group builds. One model per build, otherwise, this Panzer IV build would work for two other builds at the same time. You gotta earn that patch.

No problems, on all points.
As for scheduling, I will try to fit it in as I can. I think it comes down to using the thread as a check in for mine and others progress. Sort of a Pzr IV repository. I will work on it as I can and finish when its done. I'll do my best to keep to an assigned schedule. But its a hobby not a contract.Wink [;)] And I'll always be happy to contribute info, resources and help regardless.
As in the Sherman GB, it was very handy as well as interesting to see the different reviews and descriptions of each kit as it was built. All questions were relavent and provided useful resource info in their answers and helped the group as a whole. To be able to see (in the case of posted pics) or read how individuals tackled particular problems and what detailing they did (or not) became a very useful and constructive source of documentation and an enjoyable learning experience. And frankly, it was nice to sit down with everyone and gripe and brag about the progress and finished product.
As resources were posted and traded I know I developed a new interest in allied armor that I previously didn't have as well as a plethora of ideas for future projects. Hopefully we'll get the same out of this.
Good idea edog.

Whoa Edog. Are you talking of doing a build soon? There are so many builds going on and I'm finally realizing I can't do all of them. It would be nice to start this one up when there is a dead time in the group builds. That would maxamize members participation. I can only suggest this. I believe the Stug build ends in October. After that, nothing on the boards. Give it a thought. Smile [:)]

Well guys, I was not expecting as many responses to this thread as I got. Let’s see…

A few thoughts about a group build:

  • I see no need to make this build a sticky. Anyone interested could bookmark the thread, or add it to their favorites.

  • If we do get a group going, I would like to try to keep the discussion limited to the actual Pz IV as much as possible. At the same time though, I would love to see any progress pics of Pz IVs, or variants that you guys might be building. I also would be more than happy to answer any questions about variants that I could.

  • As far as Pz IVs for other group builds, I see no problem with building them across both threads, but I guess that is more up to the other GBs. In any case I would love to help you guys out with any questions, or discussions you might have. Of course you will have to post as many pics as possible though.Big Smile [:D]

  • As far as a timeline, if there are enough people to get a GB going, I will probably not be able to start for at least 2 weeks, I am thinking more like a month though. There are a few projects that I would like to finish up before I immerse myself in Pz IV insanity. Plus it would give guys who don’t have kits yet time to order what they need. Concerning kits that have already been started, I welcome them. If I don’t go insane, I will probably be working on my Pz’s for quite some time so I don’t see the need for a strict timeline. As far as already completed models, I would love to see any pics you guys have. It will be great for ideas, references and to get the discussion going strong.

  • I would love to get any references you guys have on the Pz IV, whether online, or printed, please let me know. If we get a group going, I will try to get a web page up with as much info as I can find.

  • Please, I would love to hear everyone’s comments on the GB guidelines so far.

People Interested in a Pz IV group:
myself
renarts
Foster7155

(please let me know if you want to be added, or taken off the list)

Foster, it is great to see that I am the only one with a pack rat problem concerning the Pz IV. I would love to hear how the TWS engine, and Verlinden interior fit. When I was ordering, they were out of the Dragon F1, and I guess the old Italeri F1/F2/G is OOP.Disapprove [V]

ridleusmc, I would suggest staying away from Tamiya kits with the PE zim. They are pretty pricey for what you get. The PE zim is rather hard to work with, and from what I hear, it does not look all that realistic. Just my humble opinion though.

Lufberym, the only gripe I have about the Italeri kit is the schurzen. The build is a little fussy, but I must admit that for such an old kit, it is quite detailed. I really enjoyed the kit and hope you do too.

I might be up for a group build in high winter, say after Christmas. After seeing my kit, I just wanted to rip them bags apart. Oh....so many Censored [censored] wheels though.

That would be a fun GB subject for next winter , I would definately be up for that one , I have no panzer 4 in my cab yet , I will not be joining any GB's until the early fall , when the stug comes up , I am going to be wayyyyyyyyyyyy to busy to do anything until then . But anyways think about getting one of those going,(GB) , it looks like you have a nice wide range of choices there , and I seriously doubt you will get them all done by then , although you never know with you folks !Cool [8D]Big Smile [:D]

Hey Edog,

I'm glad to read good things about the Italeri Pz IV H. I got that kit as a gift many years ago and it will probably end up being my first tank kit build.

I just got my Tamiya Panzer IV J in the mail. It's a very nice looking kit. Way better than their older H.
