Information, real or otherwise on a mythological beast from the past.

After finding an article for Thundergod on proposed Panzers (I will send it to you Thundergod; I just have to get my scanner working) my attention was again drawn to a small piece on the ridiculous concept Panzer called the E-1500. According to this article, this monster was planned to have a main 800mm [:0] gun and two 150mm guns in separate turrets! It was to be powered by U-boat engines, four of them[:0][:0]!!!!

Obviously, it never got pass the mad Fuhrer ranting stage, but I have always wanted to build a bit of a fantasy prototype for laughs, much along the lines of Sherm and I think Renarts' builds they showed the other day. (forgive me if I have the wrong people.

So, has anyone read anything interesting about this aborted project? Does anyone have any ideas on how it may have been configured , or how it may have been changed? (I don't know how the 880mm gun would have worked,; maybe it may have had a mortar, like the Sturmtiger's, instead?)

So go on, knock yourselves out! I'd love to brainstorm this with the forum about the shape this crazy tank may have taken!

hmm, never heard of it. And I have two books on the subject, Encyclopedia of German tanks of WWII and Spezial-panzerfahrzeuge des deutschen heeres, and none of them mentions this. But the germans had some crazy projects and just because it isn't in any of my books desn't mean that they never thought about such a project.

I do know they had plans for a 38cm ( 380mm = 15inch ) self propeled naval gun with a weight of 1000 tons.

Maybe the big gun was to be mounted like a Stug with twin turrets on top for the small(er) guns?
Let's be thankful that it didn't start in '44 and that Der Fuhrer was a nut ball!

You mean these nutty things?

It's the 1500-ton Ratte!
Turret from the Scharnhorst (middle gun removed, leaving only two), with either 128mm guns in Maus turrrets or some other nutty guns in the rear.

The toys in the pic are 1/700 scale, and were part of Takara's "Germany's Secret Weapons" series.
I have the one in the middle!

I've heard of it and you described it accurately. Could imagine that brute putting around the battlefield? No wonder the Germans lost the war.

Wow! Thanks for all the info! That gives me something to work on.
I knew that I'd find out here!

J-Hulk, what are the approximate dimensions of your little landship? Curious to know what I am in for........ Don't suppose they are still available?

What nutty idea, but potentially a great model!

800mm = 31.something inches, almost double large naval guns !!!
if it could carry the weight of the guns, how would it carry any ammo ?
sounds like fantasy ....

Scharhorst had 280mm main guns which puts it at approx 11in.
Looks like a vehicle thats half as long as a football field!

Well here is the P1500, the tank/spg I read about-

And here is the P1000 Ratte-

The P1500 here is shown as more or less a Dora with tracks, and that puts it a long way past my ability. The P1000 though, looks like a prospect. Total length with guns is 1 metre! That turret at the back represents a Maus/E100 turret! Yikes![:0]

Gee, it would be a great project; I'd get to learn a lot about things like resin casting and working with styrene. Finding tracks would be tough. It had two sets of three 1.2m tracks. That would make each track about 35mm. My Tiger 1 tracks are 20mm!Black Eye [B)]

Am I crazy for considering attempting this? I could use an E100 or Maus for the back turret, and turn the hull into a munitionschlepper. The 8 20mm flak38's are possible, and there does seem to be a lot of straight lines....

Be a long term project of course.

Long term project for sure, but definatly one that I would follow. Biggest question though, where would you put something like when done?

Sounds like the Germans were taking the idea of the massive AFV a little too seriously with that beast. It does fit with some of the nutty aspects of Hitler's personality though.

Amusingly enough I know the Russians had their own brush with insanity in the 'land battleship' notion of armoured warfare briefly, before settling back to mass producing reasonable tanks. But check out the specifications on their attempt;

KV-VI Specifications

Crew: 15 men and one Commissar
Length: 51 feet, 4 inches
Height: 15 feet, 3 inches
Width: 10 feet, 10 inches
Height/tower raised: 37 feet, 8 inches
Weight: 138 tons
Engine: 3 X V-2 at 600 horsepower each
Max Speed: 13 mph
Max Range: 98 miles road; 43 miles cross country
Armor: 160mm maximum; 7mm minimum
Armament: 2 X 152mm; 2 X 76.2mm; 1 X 45mm; 2 X 12.7mm DShK; 2 X 7.62mm Maxim; 14 X 7.62mm DT; 16 X BM-13 Rockets; 2 X Model 1933 Flamethrowers

Doesn't compare with the German beast you were describing, but the scary thing is they actually built a few of them them, and then sent them into battle!

Even if it is insane, I wouldn't want to be a soldier in his foxhole when all of a sudden this huge beast with a 800mm gun starts blowing up the line, or earth. good luck scratchbuilding it...

Phroosh, this little guy is only 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) long.
I picked it up in a convenience store last year (it came with some tasty candy!), and haven't seen them since. Lucky! I would like to find the Bismark dazzle camo version, though...

Good candy, too!

The German says, and I quote:
"Verkafts mei Gwant I fahr in Himmel!"

(I think that's an "I" after "Gwant!" Hard to tell...)

OK, who can translate this??
If only it were in Japanese...

That's a rather heavy dialect; possibly quoting literature.
Cleared up to "normal" German, it says "Verkauft mein Gewand, Ich fahre in den Himmel!"
Which translates to:
"Sell my clothes, I'm going to heaven!"

Anyway, you might want to check out

They have pretty much all the info I've found so far.
