for me it's the NBFZ, even though only a few were made; the multiple turrets just look neat, and it's sleek.

on a similar vein, the T-35 looks pretty cool too, although the central turret needs a longer gun to look great

Lots of newbies to welcome: Cabar, roowalker, Rockfall, neudog, and LSyd.

Rockfall, I've always liked the Panzer III also.

Given your criteria, my reccomendation would be the Panzer IV.
Sex in steel. Angular in all the right places, just oozes offense and europe conquering tendencies. A diamod of German industrial design.

Hands down for me is the stug 3 with the jadgpanther or tiger 1 after that. What else can you say about some thing that took out over 20,000 (with the stug 4 also) tanks!

Hard to say, as tanks aren't what you would call beautiful vehicles.

But, ok, I'll play your little game. Tongue [:P]

Purely in terms of looks, I'd have to say either the Abrams or the Swedish 103-C. For WWII, the Jagdpanther is an elegant vehicle.

You didn't ask, but tanks represent military forces, and so I would consider them to be a little too politically controversial for the office. (This is assuming "the office" means an office at a company, not your private office at your house. If I'm wrong, don't bother reading the rest of this!)

I work at a Japanese bank, and so anything from WWII is completely out -- Allied stuff, of course, but also Axis stuff, as the Japanese are deeply ashamed of, and have repudiated, their fascist past. Not because I am afraid of getting in trouble, mind you, but out of respect for the feelings of my co-workers.

I have a good friend who is Palestinian, and she has some pretty bad memories of Israeli military vehicles. I won't get into details, other than to say that she doesn't live in her homeland any more. She was driven out, as were so many others, by the impossiblity of living anything approaching a normal life in her homeland. I wonder how someone like her would feel if they walked into your office and saw an Israeli tank there.

Hey, I know you are just interested in military history and hardware. The other guys here know the same thing. But the folks in the office might not know that. Not meaning to bud into your private decisions or to ruin your fun project, but just offering this as food for thought. Tanks are built to kill people, and they often do just that. You never know who may have stared down the muzzle of the real thing you've got a model of on your desk, when she was a nine-year-old girl.

The first tank I built was the King Tiger w/ Porsche turret. I fell in love with its graceful lines and powerful main gun. I later found out that the Hensche turret King Tiger was more hull protective. My choice always is the King Tiger. Check out my contribution at this link.

WW2 era: Jagdpanther (if this qualifies as a tank that is)
post-WW2: Centurion (with skirts and 105 mm gun please)
current: Merkhava

For a paperweight I probably would choose the Centurion as this seems to be the safest choice politically. I would only do a Jagdpanther without the obvious German markings. I agree with the original poster that the Merkhava looks best but as someone pointed out might be frowned upon by some people. However, in my experience, almost noone recognises AFVs on sight.

Larry, not to contradict you at all ( I completely agree with what you said about Japan repudiating its aggressive past) , but here in my office in Japan, plenty of guys have the little 1/144 WTM JGSDF tanks and helicopters all over their workspaces! (I just have one Type 90 and one Type 74). I've seen plenty of Zeroes, Hayabusas, Raidens, and Hiens, too. You're a good guy for thinking about your co-workers' feelings, but I wonder if they really would be offended.

Of course, there's probably a big difference in how the folks in a Japanese office overseas would feel as compared to those folks in an office here in Japan.

Anyway, to reiterate: best looking tank: JGSDF Type 74!

May I join the others in welcoming those new to the board.
Now about the best looking, in no particular order M-60 series, Panthers, and Challengers.
neudog,
Most effective, the best looking. Where's the Corsair?

You have to think impressive if you haven't driven or worked on one. I drove a M-88 so she's my baby. But for looks I would say WWI Male/Female or the WWI Renault FT-17. And for those politically correct people. You can't offend too many people with them.

To the original poster:

Actually, if you're looking for a paper weight, why not go with a white metal kit? Check out the WWI Rolls-Royce armored car in 1/72 at this page:

The link to order it is here:

How about a 1.35th Maus or E100 Paperweight, well it might take up a whole A4 sheet of paper, and you might have to strengthen the table

For american armor I would go with , the good old sherman, any version , or for modern you just have to love the meanest tank on any field the m1a2 abrams
for russian armor you have to love the huge IS 2 , or the t34/85 modern rusky,,,,, go with the t-72, German if tanks only , panther ausf G in late war hard edge camo , if not tanks only I would have to say the marder3 sdkfz139 It would give someone looking at it a chance to look into the works of a gun on tracks , fun kit to build too! Merkava is kool too , what do all those chains do that hang off the turret ? And do you really need 4 machine guns on it ?

Quite possible, el Hulkster! I just try to keep my office as antiseptic as possible. I've got one model on display on my PC -- it's a Kaiyodo Right Whale from the Aqualand set.

There isn't a model to be seen anywhere in the bank. Some of the women working here have things on their computers, but they are generally very cute things with scary-large eyes. Men's desks are blank, pretty much. Battle stations, you might say. This is one of those places where the ex-pats work until 1am, and are back in the office at 8. Ah, the beneifts of being gaijin! (Which include getting canned when the economy contracts, of course!)

I don't like mordern armour, they all look the same to me. I prefer old and funny looking.

Now, that's cool!
But I know if I had that on my desktop here, all my coworkers would be salivating and saying "oishiso-!!" ("That looks delicious!")
Yes, unfortunately, they do still eat whale here...not Right Whales, I'm sure. I think it's only Mink Whales that are legal now.

Hey folks, a great idea for a paperweight would be one of those 1/72 Dragon die-cast tanks. I've got a few (well...five of 'em, to be exact...) around my computer here at home.

Wow, thanks for all the feedback. I am still leaning toward the Merkava Mk.I, although I must admit the Panther sure looks predatory.

I appreciate the PC commentary, but I am interested in the sculptural apects of machinery- wasn't going to use any markings whatsoever. Anyway I am in a small office, they wouldn't know one nation's tank from another. And BTW, thanks for the tip on the 1/72 Dragon diecasts, that in fact may be a better way to go without my desk looking overly macho with a 1/35 MBT on it.

I say an M26 Pershing. It's got a classic tank and turret look.
