Ran across that site myself before. Saw a few pics that would make great "What was this tank" quizzes.

The one that really grabbed my attention was the Panther that had a 155 mm hit to the front and a 57 mm hit to the turret. The 57mm is a nice round hole and the 155 looks like a giant bite was taken out of the front side! [:0]

Those were the two that caught my attention also. I find it hard to believe that a 57mm penetrated a King Tiger.

I read somewhere in the web about an american soldier's account of WWII where the Panther tanks arrived somewhere near Belgium bout the same time of Operation Market Garden. When an american officer spotted them advancing through a wooded area, he alledgely went back to their camp and brought a 57mm anti-tank gun. With that they were able to disable about 4 Panthers, he said. Of course I was doubtful having read about the Panther's armor being impervious to even the Sherman's 75mm gun at long to medium ranges. But I guess if we look closely into data, these tanks are not that invulnerable after all.

BTW, that destroyed Jadg with an american G.I. standing in front of it was reported in another website (a WWII Tank Destroyer Battalion Site, I think) to have been taken down by an M-36 Jackson with a 90mm gun. Many don't believe it but I think I do.

It all depends on range and muzzle velocity. The standard 75mm on the Sherman was known for it's relatively low muzzle velocity (as opposed to the 76mm on the Firefly for example) and this impacted it's penetration ability at any kind of range. Lower caliber rounds with higher muzzle velocity can achieve some astounding results depending on circumstances and where they are able to make the hits.

The site is predominantly Russian and can probably be taken with a grain of salt to some degree...but the destruction is very realistic and caught my attention as it's very rare to see pics of destroyed vehicles in the quantity and variety they have.

I have that photo too, Dwight, and the caption states it was knocked out by an M-36 Jackson.

looks like the pictures can provide some excellent diorama ideas and photos to follow with

total destruction is all I can say. that one of the panther grabbed hold of me too. after seeing those Pz IV's having been completely torn apart by lesser sized shells, its amazing to see that panther with a rather neat little hole in it from a 155mm shell hit. It looks like someone just carved it out with an asceltilene(????) torch. still, I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to be the poor guy that had to be in the front og that beast when it was hit, or newhere else in it for that mattar. either way, there's not gonna be much left for the kinderlach(????????) to bury.

The other interesting fact, if the notations on how they were destroyed is accurate, most of them met their fate from artillery or were abandoned/destroyed by their crews.

Some of them are hardly recognizable as vehicles anymore and must have taken a horrible pounding or had a catastrophic hit to fuel/ammo, etc.

Artillery= King of Battle! Sure does humble you when you see the results, doesn't it? All that armor and not much left. Even the King Tiger! What one man builds, another can destroy. Sorta gives you the willies don't it?
