While here's a link to my mobelwagon showing the extremely spacious set-up with the armor panels down.

Yep, I've seen similar pics as well as the box art on the Tamiya, very tight quarters. Judging by the seat arrangement and the height of the turret itself, it looks like you could get out of the turret by standing on the respective seats and hitching over the side. Getting in would be more like jumping a chain link fence...grab the edge and scramble over!

wbill76,

I found these links about the wirbelwind and in the first one it really looked too cramped with the figures inside.

Dwight,

I have to admit this one really has me stymied...I can't find any pictures that show hinges on the turret with the exception of that one hatch and that's what leads me to believe the only way they could get in would be to climb over. Must have been tough for the loaders especially! It certainly doesn't look like it would be very easy to get out of it either in the event of being attacked...

I thought about doing the Mobelwagen as opposed to the Wirbelwind and it's a subject I will likely return to in the future. The opportunities it represents with the figures are very tempting!

Mike,

Thanks for the good wishes, I leave on Thursday for an 11 1/2 hour flight in coach...thank goodness for portable DVD players! Big Smile [:D]

wbill76,

I kinda agree with you about how the figures will really block the view of the interior. Actually mine was the Mobelwagon which is a bit roomier than the Wirbelwind. And the side armor also opens up to accomodate the figures.

Zokissima,

I applied an overall dust coat with weathering powders and then used a damp sable brush to streak the dust with ordinary water. The water activates the binder in the powder and when it dries, the streaks remain. Prior to doing that, I used oil pastels to highlight panel lines and raised areas and used the dust to tie it all together.

Wow, very nice. THe differences between the clean and weathered pics are astounding. Did you apply an overall wash or dustcoat, or both?

that must have been some fun!
(climbing over the sides)
i wonder if they used a small ladder or step stool or something.

i thought maybe the sides tilted down like the Mobelwagen sides or something.
or opened like a clamshell.
or i don't know what!
:-)

ww,

I'm definitely thinking of using the spotter and have kept all the figures and their accessories for inclusion in this or other projects later on. Contest rules can be somewhat tricky...some allow one figure, others say that any figures represent a diorama, etc.

As for how the crew actually got into the turret, I'm guessing they just climbed over the top (one of the reasons I tried to scratch/weather up the turret top a bit) and squeezed in. The only hatch is on the front of the turret and seems to be for maintenance access to change the barrels or reach the gun mount mechanisms more than anything else.

wbill,
maybe you could have the spotter spotting AC and the crew climbing on?
like they had been eating lunch or just loafing about?

of course, i don't know how they would get IN the turret!
did the sides open some how?
may not be a usable idea, but something to think about.

Thundergod,

Yes, it's the Tamiya done OOB. I almost added indy tracks to it but that would have been a disqualifier for the contest I'm entering. Only modification I made was to drill out the gun barrels.

Dwight,

It was a hard choice on the figures but I decided to leave them out in favor of showing off the detail on the interior of the turret. The figure set provided is excellent, perfect for a diorama setting with the 3-man crew and spotter/commander.

I hope you'll add figures to that, too. I did mine with the figures and they really added life to the model. Anyway happy trip.

Thanks to all for the great comments. Any chance I can get you to come down and serve on the judging panel? Clown [:o)]

I had to finish this one up for two reasons and was glad the weekend allowed me to do it. 1) I'm leaving for Fiji for a week on business on Thursday and that will take up 2 full weekends, my normal modelling time, plus the wear and tear associated with international travel and 2) the GB will start the next week on the 16th and I wanted to have a clean work area for that. I intend to put a lot of effort into that GB along with all the other participants and didn't want the Wirbelwind sitting there taunting me about it being unfinished. Big Smile [:D]

Thanks phroosh! The weathering has a very subtle streaked effect to simulate dust/rain streaks on the hull and turret superstructure but the light kind of drowns it out, making it hard to see. Every kit is an adventure and I've applied some very helpful things picked up here for painting and detailing to add to my "toolbox".

This is my first time entering a contest so ought to be interesting. Figured I'd get my feet wet in a local show/contest and see what happens. I've got a Hummel I finished before this one that will also be entered. Depending on how things go, I may also enter the GB StuH42 just to broaden the categories.
