Mad Allied Day -- build a Braille-scale Allied tank in 24 hours
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 11:03 AM
Based on the interest in, and success of, the Mad Tiger Day build, here's another mad one-day build, for armoured vehicles of the Western Allies.

Here are the ground rules if you'd like to join us.

1) The Day: November 14, 2004 -- midnight to midnight, your time. It's suggested that you take some kind of verification picture of the sprues with all the kit pieces on them to verify that you started on November 14.

2) The vehicle: build one 1/72nd or 1/76th scale armoured vehicle (no soft skins, no towed guns, no rail guns -- just armoured vehicles) manufactured by the Americans, British, Canadians or Australians for WWII. So this means Shermans, American TDs, Stuarts, Pershings (good luck finding one), US armoured half tracks, any British tank, Univeral carriers, Canadian conversions of the Sherman, and so on and so forth. As long as it was armoured and was built by and fought for the Western Allies, it's good to go.

3) The medium: the kit should be an injection-molded kit, but it can include PE if that's in the box. No all-resin kits. No aftermarket accessories. Just kit components in the box.

4) Etc: The kit can be on a display stand or in a diorama, but it's the vehicle itself that counts.

5) Let's keep the kit we have chosen a secret until we start building. It'll be very interesting to see what vehicles and kits people choose.

Have fun, and join me on November 14! I'm going to invest in Olive Drab futures. Laugh [(-D]

No, it really didn't. There seemed to be a lot of interest when I suggested it. Anything to get people to build allied armour is a good thing!

I set a date that I assume will make everyone happy. I think at this point we just have to be firm on it, or the build will be pushed back to the year 2010. Smile [:)]

Assuming nothing goes on, I'm in. Really felt left out on MTD. Disapprove [V] Kit to be determined. Accepting all recommendations from the braille experts.

Sounds fun but I think I'll wait to see how I do on Mad Fokker Day on October 17, see how the old body and feeble mind hold up before I attempt this one. I’ll let you know October 18…or maybe the nineteenth.

Didn't you object to earlier dates I had suggested? I had wanted to do it in September, remember.

I didn't say that. I just set limits. Just like there are limits, for instance, to Mad Fokker Day -- much tighter limits than in this build, I should add.

Isn't a Fokker DVII Fokker enough then ...??! Isn't an Eduard Fokker Dr.1 Fokker enough then...??! Tongue [:P]

(BTW, the Soviets were not part of Allied Forces.)

Larry, also, I really think one of the great attraction and interest of the Mad Tiger Day was that everyone was building the same vehicle, granted from various manufacturers. I found it interesting to compare progress that way.

Mad Fokker Day is 'built' around the original concept proposed by Ausf. Only one subject, one scale, but various possible manufacturers in order to allow more people to join in (Revell's latest Dr.1 may not be as accessible, say in Mexico as it is here.

Nevertheless, I like the idea of a 24hr Group Build with a particular theme, so count me in your Mad Allied Day.

I'm up for it, T34, as long as it does not clash with the Mad Fokker Day on 17 October!

Go ahead and propose it to the crew!

Me too, but I started suggesting dates and they kept getting pushed back. You and some others had said no to October 31, and others had said no to earlier dates. So November 14 it is! (I'd love to do it August 29, but I think I'd be the only one building if I did.)

i have reviewed it and found this:

some people were complaining that it was in the middle of football season, so i got put off till oct 31, then somepeople complained that it was on halloween, then somehow it ended up on nov. 14

may i ask why it is always on sunday?

I kind of like the single vehicle option like MTD. Your call though.

Actually, it was more complicated then that. I suggested September, some said that school starts then. So I suggested sometime in October, but some said that it shouldn't ber too close to Mad Fokker day. So I suggested October 31, and some (including you) said that that's Halloween. November 7 is too close to the US election day (it's going to be a pretty heated election here in the US, so I want to give it a week or two to die down),

So November 14 it is, or we will be arguing about the date until Judgment Day. And then it will be too late. Tongue [:P]

Well, if we are doing 24 hour building, it obviously has to be either Saturday or Sunday.

And Saturdays are generally busier for people who have families. Many people use Sunday to relax -- it's traditionally the (Christian) sabbath.

I think the variety will be fun for a change. Maybe we can all keep what we are building a secret until the day. It'd be interesting to see what kits people choose.

I'm going to bow out on this one...the more I think on it, the more I realize that I'm going to have my hands full. November is the Battle of the Bulge GB and I don't want to get involved in more than one build (even a 24hour Mad Build) at the same time. Will spectate though and enjoy the progress/results as they come in. Big Smile [:D]

On the other hand, we are now entering the hallowed time known as "Football Season", so Sundays may disadvanatgeous. I'm not right now sure about this 24 hour build or Mad Fokker Day although both are intriguing. In spite of my sarcastic comments to the contrary, I actually got quite a kick out of Mad Tiger Day. Like Tigerman, my kits are piling up around me, so I think My participation in any 24 hour mad build would be first contingent on clearing away the Sherman and at least one other mid-construction project. The second contingent would be the football schedule to consider. Perhaps if the rules might be realxed to allow football junkies to build in a different local time zone. Without a map handy, I can't be sure, but possibly a T-34 built in Kursk local time might be workable!

My wife and I may be in the midst of a move back east, but if not, count me in! This will be great 'cause now I have an excuse to expand my model collection back into 1/72nd scale...

Ok, guys, so November 14 it is.

I've done some nosing around amongst the Braille cogniscienti, and they mostly all say that the Revell Cromwell is flat-out the best injection molded kit of an Allied tank in 1/72nd.
