What's your favorite WWII tracked tank destroyer?
Posted by J-Hulk on Friday, August 15, 2003 7:11 AM
Hi, folks!
I mainly wanted to try out the poll feature here, but thought a vote for your favorite tank killer might be interesting.

For you armor nuts out there, which is your favorite tank destroyer? I mentioned "tracked" in the title, because I'm sure Blackwolf would've been disappointed that I've listed no aircraft!

Here's the list of candidates. Sorry if I've left off anybody's favorite!

I'm surprised to be in second place. Where's the M 18 Hellcat? I'm doubly surprised at the M 10's lead at the moment.

woohoo I'm tied for 3rd, where's the m-18 hellcat. not that I woulda voted for it but you only got 1 US piece there. and what about the jagdpanzer IV. but you have to admire the hetzer. low profile, well armored and armed.

I was looking for the M-18 Hellcat myself And was surprised to see the M-10 in the lead. All our Germanfreaks must live in New York and Canada.

Where's the M-36? Is, the U.S. Tank Destroyer sufficiently armed to deal with the Tigers and Panthers, and its not even in the list? Oh well, I just chose another.

M-10 is kickin' butt! Big Smile [:D]

I was also suprised to see the lack of the M-18 Hellcat but the M-10 was better.

Whoops! I knew I forgot some important pieces!

I'll put in the Hellcat and Jackson.

And I incorrectly called the jagdpanzer IV a "panzerjager". Isn't that some kinda liqour?

Hey, is it ethical to add stuff mid-poll?
Heck, it's just for fun!

I'm not sure the SU 152 belongs in this catagory, it was a SPG with a howitzer. Just my thoughts. Wink [;)]

The M-18 had a 76mm gun compared to the M-10's 3in (76.2mm) The 3in was woefully underpowered and inferior to the M-18's 76mm for anti-tank roles so it was replace by the 17pdr (Achillies) and later a 90mm gun in the M-36 GMC. The M-18 had a far superior chassis with torsion bar suspension while the M-10 used the M4A2 VVSS chassis and was a very effective "stopgap" tank killer.

BTW: M-36 90mm GMCs were still serving as late as 1993 in the Croatian army.

Won't even bother comparing the sorry M-5 3in GMC based on the Cletrac. Dead [xx(]

Yeah, I was a bit suspiscious of the Su-152 as a dedicated tank destroyer myself, but it was on a list of Russian "tank destroyers" I was checking out trying to put this poll together, so I included it. Isn't that the same gun as used on the KV-II?

Also, I think I've seen a pic of a Panther with a garage door-sized hole in the side, with the caption explaining the remodeling was courtesy of an Su-152.

Claymore
Ah yes, Jagermeister. I vaguely remember it well.

Good info on the allied tank killers!
The Japanese Ground Self Defense Force used some M-36s, too.

Hi J-Hulk. I'm not sure it had the same gun as the KV II, but my guess is it did. I would love to see that picture if you can find it. The SU 152 must have been 10 yards away! Lol Big Smile [:D] I'm kinda wondering if the SU 122 was also a SPG with 122mm howitzer. Guessing it is also. Wink [;)]

Your right Dwight, J-Hulk added The M-36 and the M-18 later on. You'll have to check with J-Hulk on the game rules. Wink [;)]

Dwight, vote all ya want! No rules! The ethics I leave to the individual. This is all just for fun, anyway, so if ya wanna stuff the ballot box for candidate Jackson, go right ahead! I guess I should close voting at some point though, eh?

Tim, although I am a good ol' stump-pullin' boy from the swamps of southern Georgia, I was born in Florida, and raised in California and Michigan, so my ENGLISH doesn't even have a Southern drawl!
You're right, though...my English is slipping, slowly but surely...

J-Hulk, I was born and raised in Michigan. But I spent most of my 9 years in the Navy stationed in Norfolk, VA. Due to that I have been accused of having a southern accent myself. I can tell you for a fact my Wife, kids, and myself are about the only people in Michigan that refuse to call "soda"-"pop". Half the time people look at use like were crazy or something. But it will forever be "soda" to me.

And sometimes, just sometimes, once in a long while, when I'm tired and my guard is down, I have caught myself pronouncing the word "power" as "par."
