Thanks Eric and Chris. Have you guys hooked up? That's pretty close. Unfortunately, I'm clear across the country. Build was hoping you guys might send a picture of you two. Evil [}:)] LOL

Both you guys must be near some of the Civil War battlefields, that would be an incredible experience to visit some of them, hopefully someday.

Hi Bill, thanks for asking. I live in Vancouver Washington, which is right across the Columbia River, from Portland Oregon. I was born and lived all but two years in Portland. It was a little emotional moving here, but it's been good. Basically, we moved to build a home and take advantage of the better school system. I will always be an Oregonian in heart.

My brother-in-law lives in Roy Utah. He is based at Hill AFB. Neat place, has some nice vintage aircraft. Beautiful area. Live near there?

I've got the same problem as Robert with the pics. Poniatowski. Sorry.

Tigerman,

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, I live in Layton, which is just south of Hill AFB. About 15 miles from Roy. I lived in Roy for about 2 years (10 years ago), not too long after I retired from the Air Force. Yes, the Hill museum has a LOT of neat, ol' planes. Too bad they don't have any armor!! LOL. But they have what I thought was the only existing SR-71B. I've been told that in actuallality, it's the only SR-71C that ever was.

Maybe we can get together for a minute sometime when you're down visiting.

Bill, I think I've been through Layton when I was down there. It's possible we might go down next year, just don't know when. Last year I went in April, packed for cold weather, and it was as hot as Hedes. I guess the summers can really cook and winters...well...

The thing that truely surprised me was how much smaller some those aircraft were than I pictured them in my mind. [:0]

Off topic, but they have a gorgeous golf course up there(on base?) or near it. Mountains everwhere. I'll let you know if I go.

Tigerman- Can't say as I have any Civil War battlefields around me, Sherman decided he did'nt want to mess with the mountains so he came down I-75 instead. That would be Erics backyard though. Do have alot of gold mines though since this was where the first gold rush was ( not California).

Hi Chris, are you sorta north near Chickamauga? Isn't that area kinda mountainness? Sherman started out in northern Georgia fighting some battles at Dalton and Resca and worked his way south to Atlanta. I know Kennesaw Mt. was a big defeat for Sherman. Does Eric live in the Atlanta area?

Eric would be between Chickamauga and Kennesaw. I would be over to the other side of the mountains. I've been to both places before, was a big civil war buff as kid. Was actually t Kennesaw Mtn. on 9/11 and saw the 3000+ U.S. flags they had flying on one of the battle fields. Another day kicking myself for not having a camera in work truck.
I have been on job site that got shut down when we came across an old house basement that had crates of supplies left behind from the confederates. Did a job in Kennesaw park that you did'nt even want to look like that you were sifting dirt, which is hard for me since that is part of the testing I do.
The best way to tell were we are is look at a map of ga. Eric would be along I75 N. of Atl. I am at the north west corner of the big lake N. of Atl.
The only thing Dahlonega had for the war is that it was home of a mint for gold coins for the south until the north took it over. Now there is a college bldg built on the foundation.

Chris , fascinating stuff. I didn't know about the Georgia gold rush; they say you learn something new everyday. That must have been some sight on Kennesaw Mt. on 9/11, pretty eerie I imagine. Eric is farther north than I pictured. I'll look up your location in my daughters atlas. Maybe Eric has some pictures of Chickamauga. That battle has always intrigued me.

Although I'm basically from Georgia (loooong story, that!), I don't know much about the Civil War. Did any fighting make it down to Brunswick? Don't think it did. We have a lot of sites concerned with fighting the Spanish in the 18th century, though. Fort Frederica, etc.

Brian good question. I'm not sure, but one of our local friends may know. I'm not sure of the location. If I'm correct Georgia was pretty quiet until 1864, then Sherman started on his Atlanta campaign and marched to the sea. It's possible it got in harms way or some skirmish.

Hey Tigerman, Yeah I'm NW of Atlanta...about 35-40 miles N and about 15 M west of I-75. If you look at a map, find Cartersville right along I-75 then go west about half way to Rome along Hwy 411. There are historic markers everywhere you go around there, in peoples front yards, along the road, everywhere. Lots of skirmishes and stuff happened around that area. There's a few houses that are historic also. I've always liked reading about the war of northern aggression Wink [;)] but never really studied it. There is definetly a lot of history in the area though. I did grow up in Marietta which is right next to Kennesaw and I spent many a weekend as a kid climbing the Mt. and spending time in the park. As far a Brunswick and the GA coast I don't think there were any major battles along there other than some small ones here and there but I'm not sure on that.

If memory serves me correct, I believe Sherman spared Brunswick as he did with a small town called Madison. In Madison he liked all the old homes so much that he would not burn them. They are still there today and it is nice driving through there. I beleive though that the closer he got to the coast the more people began to agree more and argue less.
A small note about our gold here, it is the purest gold naturally found in the world. It used to be so abundent that it was laying around on the ground. Hard to find any now a days all though there are still some people that make a living panning for it. There are still some Dahlonega coins around but they go for around $7000.

Well Eric my references are dated, but I put you near Kingston. My book is a little old and it doesn't have a 1-75 in it, but your other directions are good.

According to a reference in my Century War Book there appears to have been a small skirmish near Rome and Kingston on May 17-18, 1864 with about 75 Union casualties. Confederate are unknown.

Down south near Dallas a major battle called the Battle of New Hope Church took place, with approximately 2,400 Union and 3,000 Confederate casualties. This occurred on May 25-June 4.
On June 9th, the bloody Battle of Kennesaw Mt. occurred, a resounding defeat for Sherman. Had it been another Union General, he might have retreated. Fortunately for the Union, he pressed on.

The best thing that happened for the North was the relief of General Johnston by Jefferson Davis. A big blunder. He felt Johnston was giving up to much land without fighting. On the contrary, he was outnumbered badly, yet slowly bleeding Sherman's army. Once he was removed, General Hood took over. Hood was an attacking General and now the confederates were coming from behind their breastworks and losing many soldiers. They basically got penned in at Atlanta and to avoid being encircled, retreated Northwest on toward the armies doom in Tennessee. There was nobody left to stop Sherman's March.

And that is your quickie history lesson for today. Tune in tomorrow for more babbling.

Sorry, I still can't locate Brunswick, is that where they make all that great bowling equipment? Wink [;)]

Ha I found Brunswick; I was staring at it all the time. It appears to be on the coast near the Altamaha River. It's almost in the middle of the Georgia coast. Ever get any hurricanes? If it were about 60-75 miles northeast near Savannah, it most certainally have seen combat.

Very good Tigerman, you found me. Kingston it is! Well I'm between there and Taylorsville but I won't go into that Wink [;)]. Brunswick is on the coast maybe 15-20? miles north of FL. It's above St. Marys where the naval base is which is now better known as Kings Bay and directly next to Jekyll and St. Simons Islands. I used to live in Kingsland GA which is about 3-4 mi above the FL line there (long long time ago).

Tigerman- Pretty good lesson there. We don't really get hit by hurricanes, Georgia was smart we suck in our belly while N. Carolina decided to stick thiers out in the ocean so they get them instead.

Shermanfreak - Awful brave of you to relate your self to Gen. Sherman around all us Ga. boys, seems to still be a little bad blood with that name around these parts!

Chris, yes thank goodness for you and your state that you didn't get hit by Isabel. Unfortunately, you still get those hot humid southern summers-eh. Still, more preferable to a hurricane. Winters are probably not too bad-huh?

Hey guys, do you know that we have an average of 19 typhoons (or hurricane as you call it) here in a year? About half of which usually pack a devastating effect on the country. I know how destructive these things are. I am sorry for those hit by Isabel.

I guess we have learned to live with it here.
