NEW ARRIVALS!,the dogs of alan
Posted by detailfreak on Saturday, April 19, 2008 10:04 AM
just arrived, now these look as old as some of the italeri and revell kits i purchased, the  soviet su-76m,sdkfz 124 wespe,sig-33 arty piece, also some cav zim for my other stug g early.the detail of these kits seems a little soft in some areas but with a little care they will make nice additions to the shelf.dupes,i'm going to try to save the arty piece for the next winter warriors g.b..will be a winter emplacement.so if any one has any hints or look out fors on any of these kits let me know.Blindfold [X-)]

a little bit decieving.these are new to me.although the boxes have that mildew smell the price is right .i am going to find the photos of a captured su-76 in german service and go that route.as you see the title reads new arrivals not new releases.have a good week-end tigerman.

I just purchased an Alan Wespe from a guy in another forum for 7.00! If you do an ebay search in armor models in hobbys and crafts one of the ebay stores has a PE kit for the alan kit looks like a reasonable price, I would jump on it but it seems I'm over budget, or so I'm told.....Whistling [:-^]

Hints or lookouts for these kits?  I hate to give you bad news but  the Su-76 and the Wespe have been pretty much been written off due to their crudity.  The Su-76 kit vies for the title of worst 1/35 kit whenever people talk about poor kits.  The Wespe sadly came out about the exact time as the Tamiya Wespe.  If more people owned it, it might have a worse reputation but frankly, no one bought it since they wanted the Tamiya kit.  I wonder if I've ever even seen the Alan version built up and photographed. The Alan SiG 33 is the only game in town (besides the bad Verlinden resin one).  With PE and some new wheels, it can be done well.

...the lesson being, it's much wiser to spend $20.00 on one good kit than on 3 crappy ones...Whistling [:-^]............Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

i must say that i have a box full of old nichimo kits and these are clownish in comparison to the alans.well the wespe is in its final stages of assembly and i like it,its a better kit than alans grille.perhaps some photos tonight.

I've got the sIG33 kit in the Alan Bison kit and it's got some fit issues/challenges to be dealt with. As Roy points out, adding a PE set helps greatly in many key areas.

Personally, I don't have the cash to drop on some of the high end kits.(try 215 bucks a week in child support) I buy what I can afford. I'm still working on my skills so lets say I make a mistake and ruin a project, which really doesnt happen, how much am I out 10, 15 bucks? versus 25 and up? that 7 dollar Alan kit looks pretty good. This hobby is fun to me, its kinda like therapy after spending 40 hours on an assembly line. Now when I commit to a subject I'm really into like the bigs cats g/b thats where I'm dropping cash, almost 60 bucks on the kit and p/e etc. The lessons I've learned on those bargain kits are going to make my Tiger I a better build.

Just my 2 centsBig Smile [:D]

well douglas i feel the same way you do as far as building goes.got a start on all three spg's.honestly the worst looking one is the su-76,the hull floor must be a 1/4 inch thick, but hey its a model is'nt it.the grille had only a couple of minor fit issues so far.the wespe is the one i concentrated most of the build time on.and heres a few photos of the dog from alan.

oops grabbed a double shot .please post some photos of your alan build doug.Big Smile [:D]Thumbs Up [tup]

Still in the box actually, got two very old Italeri kits going right now. And yes you do get what you pay for. these seem to be decent kits not really many fit issues some minor cleanup on the Hetzer, my main issue with the Hetzer are missing parts, first I was missing the inner half of the sprockets (off the sprue) and now assembly is finished except, TADA! the top half of the muffler is missing from the sprue. The sprockets were easy enough, a fellow modeller from another state helped me out with some spares, this is another story, probably gonna have to scratch build. I've never attempted that, but, that is my point exactly to what I was talking about. I am learning and advancing my skills. I paid 8 bucks for this old kit and I'm having a blast! And I really am looking forward to that Alan Wespe.

I'm confused --what's going on with this buld, with the garish bright yellow paint and the dark wheels--are you refurbishing this?

detailfreak, please accept my apologies if I sounded like I was "slamming" your build here; I was not. It was a well-intentioned question. As you know, I've been mucking around over in the "Auto's" forums, and a lot of guys over there seem to buy old kits off ebay and strip the paint off them and then repaint them; it was with this in mind that I asked the question, because the color of the yellow practically jumps off the screen, and I couldn't understand using such a bright shade. Plus, your wheels are a very dark shade overall; they look almost as if they were salvaged from another tank model?

So, I hope you understand my honest confusion. I wasn't being judgmental or condescending! Black Eye [B)]...and I have many "doogs" in my collection too, if truth be told! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

doog,no offense taken,no apologies needed.i could see where you would have thought all those things.i too was probably a little taken,it was a brisk day at the rat race and i was feeling a tad tested.i always appreciate any input, positive or neg..after all the world is to small and time too short to get wound up when i use this activity to unwind.Sign - Oops [#oops]

Thanks for the tip on what to do with the dust collectors. Fircrackers are a fitting end to a project which may have met an untimely collision with the floor.Sign - Oops [#oops]
