"Lair of the Rust Bunnies" photo feature up in forums...
Posted by the doog on Thursday, September 18, 2008 10:50 PM

Hi all!

If you all remember my "Lair of the Rust Bunnies" dio here of the rusted-out Chevy Nomad, I'm honored to say that it is in the new November issue, and also up in a photo feature here on the FSM site, under "How-to Articles" under the "Auto" subtitle.

Click on that, and it's called "Photo Gallery: Karl Logan's rustbucket Revell 1:25 scale Chevy Nomad"

I had to remove this post when I had sold the article for publication, but I just want to let you all know that it, and the "Hair Spray Weathering Technique" tutorial I did with it is with it!

Here's a few pics of it--tons more over there!

You've earned it, doog! That is one impressive piece! I love the attention to the small details, like the wires hanging out of the headlight fixtures and the empty plastic ring-thingies that held the 6-pack together. Very cool! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks ruddratt! Do you know, I get more comments on that 6-pack thing than justabout anything in the dio?! Amazing to me how a simple detail seems to "grab" everyone's eye! Thanks for the compliments!

James--thanks, as well! I've seen your truck too! Very nice!!! I too, love these old, beat-up vehicles! I have a folder of "junkyard photos" on my laptop with about 250 photos for reference--I love looking through it!

Thanks, Larryd!! Thank you for the compliments; I'm happy that you enjoyed the article!

Thank you, too, Papa John! The "mop-n-Glo" comment cracked me up! Now THAT will give me nightmares, LOL!

Thanks for commenting, all! Hope you are subscribers to Finescale! My Hetzer will also be in the next two issues, Dec, and Jan. Sign up now!! Blush [:I]

BTW I restrained from the 6-pack comments but now that you mention it that's a real threat to the environment and wildlife in particular as one of those little bunnies could easily get his head stuck in one of the holes.

LOL!

Right you are, Larry!

I'm happy to say, however, that my Daddy taught me right when he would take me to tag along on his hunting trips until I got old enough to get my own license--he told me "Never leave anything in the woods and field  but your footprints".

It's one of my "golden rules"! Smile [:)]

Spudzero, go to the "How To" article and read it! I explain it all in there! Or, buy the issue when it comes out!

Doog, this rivals your haunted Panzer from several months back. Truly impressive and well deserving of publication.

Thanks, tellis!

Thanks smeagol--they're "Preisser" 1/24 scale bunnies. They come prepainted, but in mostly white and gray. I repainted them to look like cottontails. Can't remember where I got them--google them and you should come up with some distributors...

Congratulations Karl! I have been following your builds for a while now, and I have got to tell you that there is not one build that has failed to impress me. You are truly an artist. There is no detail left to the imagination in these miniature pieces of art.Thumbs Up [tup]

All gave some and some gave all.

Of course, bunnies being bunnies, maybe they'll reproduce and the doog will have more of them than he'll know what to do with!Whistling [:-^]

I saw the pictures in FSM as I was glancing through it and said, "Hey, that car looks familiar!" I haven't read the article yet (I wanted to just finish the last few pages of Martin Popoff's Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal Vol. 2: The 1980s; this book helped me keep my sanity during my hernia repair and subsequent recovery) but looking forward to it! Congratulations!

Perhaps you can bring "Lair of the Rust Bunnies" to the IPMS Nationals in Phoenix in 2010. I'll be there; it's just five miles from my apartment! (On second thought, perhaps not; during my work at a local plant nursery, I get lots of complaints from customers about bunnies eating the landscaping.Laugh [(-D])

I must also add my name to the list of awe inspired viewers of this amazing hunk of plastic. I've read the article in the new FSM and now have a few more tricks to add to my own arsenal. I do have one question regarding the hair-spray. Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't quite understand it's purpose or what the desired effect is supposed to be. Texture? Any help for this unworthy plastic smasher would be greatly appreciated. And again WooooooooW!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, for the kind words, Jim Barton! I hope your recovery is going well! I don't quite think I'll make it to Phoenix--I'd be afraid to even attempt to bring this dio on a plane in any way; they'd probably think it was a bomb or something! But I apppreciate the sentiment--sppedy recovery to ya, Jim! Smile [:)]

enodaed--thank you, I'm pleased that you like my work.

The hair spray acts as a water-soluble layer on top of which your final "paint coat" goes on to. Once you paint on the final coat, you can then use water to scrub away the paint coat in what ever way you choose, because it's just sitting on this layer of easily-disovable hair spray. If the hair spray wasn't there, the final paint coat would just bond to the undercoat/primer coat, and you'd have a devil of a time getting this effect. This effect is only possible by having that hair spray underneath. Try it--you'll be amazed at how easy it is to do!

Thanks again for your kind compliments, guys! Smile [:)]

Doog! Great piece, & congrats on the publication!!!!!!

I showed the pics of the dio to a guy at work...he's not a modeler, but when I showed him all he could say was WOW!, and Holy Cow! Then he asked a question, an it's a good one..."Why isn't this guy in Hollywood doing models there?

I'd love to see what you could do with as a dio with Skywalkers X-Wing in the swamp on Dagobah!

My recovery is coming along slowly but surely, Karl. I still have another few weeks to go before I'm completely normal, but I'm feeling much better now than before my surgery.

Finally did read that article and thoroughly enjoyed it! Some of my co-workers were impressed, too, even the non-modelers. The rabbits really bring it to life. Now where's my copy of Watership Down (the book, not the movie)?

Thanks, Dave! I've only done a few Sci-FI builds in my life--an "AT-AT"., and an ancient "Space 1999 Eagle" spaceship! Thanks for your comment!

Jim, glad to hear that yo're recovering steadily! Hope you're back on your feet soon! Thanks again for your comments and your interest! Big Smile [:D]

Thanks, Doog, for clearing up the hair spray trick.  Very cool!  Although the article was great (congrats!), it wasn't completely clear about how the hairspray trick worked.  Now we all know...!  BTW, 'll be looking forward to your next article in FSM.  (I'm trying to soak up all the "new" techniques since I picked up modelling again after a 20+ year hiatus.)

I really insist that we need to change that.  The problem is that Scifi and anime modeling is a beginners step for most.  Most start with it, and move onto scale and such (like me) not many, rarley any at all, go from scale and such and move to scifi/anime.  I would really love to see what you could do with a gundam kit, or an armored core kit.  I think you could do them all to shame (them all being the top modelers in anime/scifi)

Congrats on the article in FSM. I let my subscription lapse as I don't have much interest in military models, but bought a copy for your article. I like your attention to detail, like the two angles of rust streaking on the fallen-off door...showing that it became unhinged slowly.

I noticed that you bought your leaves from Joefix studios. They look great. I have found a local source for a very similar product...the silver birch tree in my front yard. If you pull apart the seeds you get great looking scale leaves. If you use dried seed pods/cat-tails the scale leaves are brown, fresher pods give green leaves.

Hmmm...smeagol, I think that chances of me doing a Gundam kit is about negative-one-thousand; I'm not much into that whole "anime culture". I can't stand Japanese animation! Too herky-jerky for me!

I just have too many car/tanks to build right now!
