He knows I am building it now, since I hosted Christmas and my modeling took over my whole loft. So the surprise is lost, as is the Christmas gift, but since he now knows, I have shevled this (other than some undercarraige work) until Spring. Then I can get back into my garage, with the goal of producing a product for his birthday in May. I have some pics of the body paint i have been meaning to upload. My pics are on my phone, but the uploading needs my laptop and never the twain shall meet. Maybe this weekend. I am having a tough time getting a decent finish on the body. I have always been a poor airbrusher (50% talent + 50% lack of patience). It would be tough for me to have a nice, glossy finish; all the more difficult in getting an old, faded car feel. Your eyes know the way it should look, but translating that onto plastic is another story. I am thinking of doing some nice sanding work and then adding coats. But even sanding should be done in the garage (detached, unheated). I hope to upload pics this weekend. Thanks for the encouragment!

Glad you continued to post photos of your build and hope you continue to do so. Idiots can be found everywhere. I also like the idea for the diorama - is it a surprise for your brother? Or does he know you're building it?

I understand that.  Those engines were a lot easier.  I cant remember the color of my engine block, although, my gut tells me that it was grimly black/brown from the leaking oil.  You know how those old small blocks liked to leak.  If they weren't leaking something was seriously wrong!  My old 79 was light blue, the 77 was black, and my 80 was maroon.  I bet it is going to look good when it finished.  I like the idea for the diorama too.

Thanks, for the post, Jerry.  I meant to post my progress, but simply did not have time.  I was stealing away to build and transferring pics from my phone to my laptop and posting was a bit too much.  But since I shut down for the winter (can’t airbrush in 30 degrees), I will start posting my progress.
I first had to tackle the engine, which was fun, as it is an engine that I understand, not these new-fangled ones that require a computer geek.
I did a lot of experimenting with weathering, especially with the parts that are painted, those that are stainless, and those in between.

One thing I noticed was that the instructions put out by Trumpeter were…uninspired.  Most of the parts were supposed to be flat black and the engine block red.  I tossed those and used my instincts and Google to paint.  My block is supposed to be blue to match the exterior (that was the color on my brother’s ’78) and I alternated steel and aluminum as needed.  I then scuffed up the bottom pieces, like the oil pan and tranny, and then, applied a light brushes of aluminum and brown to short road wear.

Hi Brian, have you made any progress on your Monte?  I am interested in your build.  I owned three when I was younger.  I had a 77, 79, and an 80.  They were great cars and I wouldn't mind having one or all of them back today.  :)

Tell me about it. I am recreating a car that i actually drove as a teenager in the 1990s. 21 years of schooling cant be that wrong.

Again, the kit you have is not a Monte Carlo.

The OP clearly stated he has the Trumpeter MONTE CARLO kit purchased off EBay.

The yellow Mopar is from another member posted to illustrate a point.

Get off it. Let the kid build the car.

OP here. Are you replying to me? If so then you dont know what a Monte Carlo is. Not only does the box say so, my family owned two of these when i was a teenager, a 76 and a 78.

Brian

Go ahead and post your pictures. That will let us see how well you’re doing.  At the same time if you have a question or are having a problem we can "see" what you are talking about and offer suggestions or answers.  Of course it seems very unsettling to post pictures at first, but believe me, 99% of the forum will be with you, not against you.  The more you post the more we can enjoy your project with you.

Thanks.

I have to admit that i am pretty self-conscious about posting pics, since i am such a noob.  But i will swallow my fear. Just be kind! All of you build such great models that i dont know if i could ever make something as worthy.

Thanks for the help and encouragement.  It really takes the edge off the challenge.

That would be pretty cool. But my goal is a practical joke for my brother. As mentioned above, my brother had a 78 MC as a long-haired teenager and was harassed by the cops for it. I want to present him with a diorama of him being pulled over in the mid-1990s. So the light blue has to stick.

How about all shiny black, gray interior and 100 spoke wires like Denzel drove in "Training Day"?

Do take photos of your Monte as you build it, i'd like to see it progress.

Deep Breath.......exhale.. ..OK, back to the  topic at hand.

The idea of using washes is a good place to start.  Also you may wish to consider using slightly different colors for the wash, grays, buff, light browns, whatever.   These can give a less stark color than pure black, while still giving definition to the details.

Another idea is to mix a lighter version of your base color and lightly spray it over the model.  This will help to “fade” the color.

Remember:  Less is More.    Start slowly and work up to what you want or “ it is easier to add than to remove”.

Is this the 78 Monte Carlo you have?

Used to have a 1 to 1 scale; now I am getting the itch to see if I can recreate it

This is a 1978 Monte Carlo:

In don't know when the Trumpeter kit came out, but it is a '78. That was the only year that i was interested in.
