Thanks, for the post, Jerry.  I meant to post my progress, but simply did not have time.  I was stealing away to build and transferring pics from my phone to my laptop and posting was a bit too much.  But since I shut down for the winter (can’t airbrush in 30 degrees), I will start posting my progress.
I first had to tackle the engine, which was fun, as it is an engine that I understand, not these new-fangled ones that require a computer geek.
I did a lot of experimenting with weathering, especially with the parts that are painted, those that are stainless, and those in between.

One thing I noticed was that the instructions put out by Trumpeter were…uninspired.  Most of the parts were supposed to be flat black and the engine block red.  I tossed those and used my instincts and Google to paint.  My block is supposed to be blue to match the exterior (that was the color on my brother’s ’78) and I alternated steel and aluminum as needed.  I then scuffed up the bottom pieces, like the oil pan and tranny, and then, applied a light brushes of aluminum and brown to short road wear.

I understand that.  Those engines were a lot easier.  I cant remember the color of my engine block, although, my gut tells me that it was grimly black/brown from the leaking oil.  You know how those old small blocks liked to leak.  If they weren't leaking something was seriously wrong!  My old 79 was light blue, the 77 was black, and my 80 was maroon.  I bet it is going to look good when it finished.  I like the idea for the diorama too.

Glad you continued to post photos of your build and hope you continue to do so. Idiots can be found everywhere. I also like the idea for the diorama - is it a surprise for your brother? Or does he know you're building it?

He knows I am building it now, since I hosted Christmas and my modeling took over my whole loft. So the surprise is lost, as is the Christmas gift, but since he now knows, I have shevled this (other than some undercarraige work) until Spring. Then I can get back into my garage, with the goal of producing a product for his birthday in May. I have some pics of the body paint i have been meaning to upload. My pics are on my phone, but the uploading needs my laptop and never the twain shall meet. Maybe this weekend. I am having a tough time getting a decent finish on the body. I have always been a poor airbrusher (50% talent + 50% lack of patience). It would be tough for me to have a nice, glossy finish; all the more difficult in getting an old, faded car feel. Your eyes know the way it should look, but translating that onto plastic is another story. I am thinking of doing some nice sanding work and then adding coats. But even sanding should be done in the garage (detached, unheated). I hope to upload pics this weekend. Thanks for the encouragment!
