Trumpeter 78 Monte Carlo
Posted by Brian2015 on Saturday, October 3, 2015 7:58 PM

I am starting my first car build in 25 years; my second build overall since then. Built a plane last month. It's a 78 Monte Carlo kit from Trumpeter.

I got the kit off eBay and it looks good. Sealed, undamaged. My goal is to work a diorama with a 1992 Crown Vic cruiser and replicate one of the many scenes when my brother got pulled over in the early 1990's for having long hair.  He will get a kick out of it.

Does anyone have any tips for this MC kit? My goal was to have the door open and a cop searching it, but the parts (body/interior tub) don't look as if I could safely cut the door out and make it work. At least on my ability. Also any basic tips on car builds, especially body painting a used car, would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

-Brian

i've done a few 'daily driven' cars

i use acrylic brown and black washes to create a look of dirt and grime. A 'wash' is thin black paint that will flow into all the crevices and depressions. the other technique you need is 'drybrushing', if you wipe most of the paint off your brush, you can apply a very small, light amount of paint to edges and high spots. silver paint is good for this when you want scratched metal and off-white for dust.

Scale Auto magazine, a sister publication to FSM, just reprinted an article on opening doors and trunks. It should be an easy back issue pickup.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that's not a 1978 Monte Carlo. That's a Dodge. I should know for I owned a '78 Monte Carlo.

The only kits I know that came out as a kit were '79 and '80 or '81 Monte Carlo my MPC. I built both kits years ago.

Blacky, you missed the last part of OP's post where he asked:

Also any basic tips on car builds, especially body painting a used car, would be much appreciated.

so i used my Dodge to explain the technique of making them look used. it's nothing to do with the MC, as i said.

Thanks a lot for the advice (sorry i didnt get back sooner). I think I'm going to try the black wash as a start. Maybe dry brush the wheel wells.

Would ypu recommend mixing a bit of grey into the normal blue metallic paint to dull it out a bit?

In don't know when the Trumpeter kit came out, but it is a '78. That was the only year that i was interested in.

I resent you calling me "Blacky." I prefer BS214 or BlackSheep214. Pay mind to who you respond to.

Deep Breath.......exhale.. ..OK, back to the  topic at hand.

The idea of using washes is a good place to start.  Also you may wish to consider using slightly different colors for the wash, grays, buff, light browns, whatever.   These can give a less stark color than pure black, while still giving definition to the details.

Another idea is to mix a lighter version of your base color and lightly spray it over the model.  This will help to “fade” the color.

Remember:  Less is More.    Start slowly and work up to what you want or “ it is easier to add than to remove”.

Is this the 78 Monte Carlo you have?

Used to have a 1 to 1 scale; now I am getting the itch to see if I can recreate it

Do take photos of your Monte as you build it, i'd like to see it progress.

How about all shiny black, gray interior and 100 spoke wires like Denzel drove in "Training Day"?

That would be pretty cool. But my goal is a practical joke for my brother. As mentioned above, my brother had a 78 MC as a long-haired teenager and was harassed by the cops for it. I want to present him with a diorama of him being pulled over in the mid-1990s. So the light blue has to stick.

I have to admit that i am pretty self-conscious about posting pics, since i am such a noob.  But i will swallow my fear. Just be kind! All of you build such great models that i dont know if i could ever make something as worthy.

Thanks for the help and encouragement.  It really takes the edge off the challenge.

Thanks kp. I am learning all of this on the fly, so i doubt that I will have any insights to share anytime soon. But i will keep this post going with my progress.

Thanks.

Brian

Go ahead and post your pictures. That will let us see how well you’re doing.  At the same time if you have a question or are having a problem we can "see" what you are talking about and offer suggestions or answers.  Of course it seems very unsettling to post pictures at first, but believe me, 99% of the forum will be with you, not against you.  The more you post the more we can enjoy your project with you.

OP here. Are you replying to me? If so then you dont know what a Monte Carlo is. Not only does the box say so, my family owned two of these when i was a teenager, a 76 and a 78.

The OP clearly stated he has the Trumpeter MONTE CARLO kit purchased off EBay.

The yellow Mopar is from another member posted to illustrate a point.

Get off it. Let the kid build the car.

Tell me about it. I am recreating a car that i actually drove as a teenager in the 1990s. 21 years of schooling cant be that wrong.

Hi Brian, have you made any progress on your Monte?  I am interested in your build.  I owned three when I was younger.  I had a 77, 79, and an 80.  They were great cars and I wouldn't mind having one or all of them back today.  :)
