Moto GP group build

Well, I WAS all ready to go, then I had surgery on my right hand (dominant one) so whenever we DO start, you all are gonna have to be patient with ol' lefty. Trying to talk the boss (wife) into authorizing the Fortuna M1 along with tobacco decals to build alongside my Rossi Gauloises. Probably good that this might be delayed so I can wear her down. Also, anybody out there build or bought any of Tamiya's F1's in 1/20? I'm looking at maybe the Williams BMW or the '00 or '01 Ferrari. I might start a thread on this to see how much input I get.

Aaaahhhh... F1's! I have bought a *cough* stack of them! Some I did justice to, some sadly not. Worst is that most got trashed in my recent move...

Anyways, I am currently "converting" a F2001 to a BAR004, it really goes together nicely. Built a F2000 a while ago (one of the lost souls) and that was a pleasure to built! Still have the see-through version in the cupboard (with SMS PE set) and will build that one soon-ish. Regarding the FW24, both versions "in stock" and unbuilt. Id this is your first F1, I would advise you to rather go for the Ferrari's first off, then tackle the Williams. It apparently is a bit more difficult to get 100% right and does have a more tricky colourscheme to paint. But stunning is the word for this kit... Any other questions, just ask, I'll answer what I can.

Daniel, a few weeks' delay would actually suit me fine. We are having a hectic time at work. Should quieten down by then. I was actually just wondering whether I missed the start of the thread in the GB forums completely! I am actually planning on making that a prolonged weekend, so would I be shot if I maybe start earlier in that weekend? (will anyways just be for the prepping...) By that time I might actually have made up my mind as to which of the two project I'll be doing!

Hi, I am new to the forum. Actually this is the first day I got on even after reading the magazine for the past 7 years. Anyway I am actually trying to start my own MotoGP collection here as well. So far I just graduated college and started on the NSR500 '86 Gardener version and the kawasaki KR500 both by Tamiya. Up to this point I used to build armors so I am still really green to motorcycles but I sure would like to join the group build so I can get to know more people and of course if you actually consider the older 500cc class as MotoGP. I do have a bunch of new kits (RC211V '03, '02, '03 Valencia, and the '04 YZR-M1) on my shelf and another order on its way (NSR500 '99, NS500 '83) while waiting on a studio27 detailing set for the rc211v. I posted some pics online. http://spaces.msn.com/members/archangel571/ and as you can pretty much see, i am horrible at over-using putty for the cowlings since the putty usage on the tanks were mostly minimized thanks to tamiya.

You'll enjoy the RC211V's then! Absolutely no putty! Goes together like a dream!

Welcome here, enjoy the forums! And do join the GB, there's a couple of guys that really know their stuff! I am unfortunately not in that category... A GB is a great place to learn if you're new to a topic...

Andrew, I've check through my photo collection and I'm not too sure the one that I have whether it's 01 or 00. What Shayne said is true. Tamiya simple didn't put any effort to recreat the actual colours of Telefonica Blue. Racing Blue for M1 is the closest so far to the real thing. Just the metalic particle on the real thing is much finer.

Yamafreak - The Tamiya 1/20 F1 cars are all pretty good kits. I'm actually more of an F1 fan than Moto GP, so I've built lots of them. I've built the Ferrari F2001, 312T-3 and F189, The Williams FW24, Tyrrell P34 and Mclaren MP4-5B. Also did the Benneton B192 a while ago. The quality of the kits is first class.

Cupcai, I have to agree, they are not getting the blues right. I haven't even looked at the instructions for the new Subaru, but saw an tv article over the weekend on the Subaru - and they're for sure not "Mica blue" any more. I don't have the privilidge to see them in real life, so if anyone can comment on that, I'd appreciate it. It looked much more like a more matt light blue on there now... (?)

Back to the M1, I was actually thinking of using Mica Blue on there anyways, instead of Racing Blue. It just seems a much closer match for me. Might be wrong, but that's the feeling I got.

Oh yeah, on the topic of F1's: the most improved area is something you'd think is small. The rear wing assembly! But on some of the older models, it's really easy to miss-align this - and trust me, it stand out like a sore thumb! That's part of why I suggested to start off with one of the newer Ferrari's.

I think that I'll use racing blue on mine, but be careful on how thick a coat I put on it. The Tamiya spray cans change alot depending on how thick you put the paint on. I'll use TS-50 for my spiderman bike, but I'm not sure about the red colour. The renaissance instructions say Ferrari red. I'm thinking of using Tamiya spray can bright red. Anyone else have any thoughts on what colour I should use?

As far as F1's are concerned, you're right Seabee. The rear wings are alot easier to align now. I'm wondering when Tamiya will release another F1 kit. They were releasing one a year for a while there, but now there hasn't been a new one for nearly 2 years. I think part of the reason is the complex body work of the new cars. They probably find all those winglets, flip-ups and scoops too hard to mold.Hope they do release something soon though, maybe a Mclaren MP4-20 or Williams FW-27.

Ferrari red is that "bright red", yes. TS49. Ever since they got the Marlboro sponsorship.

Yeah, I've heard that their F1 guru actually left. I actually won't mind some older F1's. Even those allready released way back by them, like the FW07 or the BT-xx (can't remember which brabham they released - think it was 49 or 52).

Seabee, I suggest that you should stick to racing blue for M1. Maximum of three layers should be perfect to replicate the real thing. Telefornica blue seems to me something of mica blue mix with racing blue. I haven't have time to experiment on the ratio yet. For FW24 builder, racing blue doesn't match well to the real thing as well. The metalic particle almost non-visible. It's very deep blue and almost like royal blue. I will post the 03/04 williams photo soon.

Good info on the F1 cars, gents. I think mine will have to wait though, I've given into the Star Wars bug a little and just got an old X-wing off E-bay. I think that will be my tester to see if my dexterity is up to par to participate in this here build. Oh, and I still gotta get the Fortuna M1. Which reminds me, I saw in HLJ that there are two suppliers of tobacco decals for the M1's. Tabu has them seperate, and Museum collection has them together. Seems to be a difference in the amount of decals also. Anybody know about this?

If you are talking about the Gauloises decals, the Tabu ones are seperate. You only get the Gauloises markings and the rest you have to use the Tamiya decals. Same goes for the Fortuna set. Don't know about the museum collection ones though.

I saw a nice set of Fortuna decals for the M1 by Studio 27 the other day. They were a complete set with every marking needed for the M1. They also have a set for the RC211V as well. Might have to do one of them one day.

Cupcai, my "problem" with the Racing Blue is that it seemed very metallic, relative to what I perceive (from tv). You've been up close and personal and if it's that's best match, thanks for the info! I'll stick to Racing Blue, then.

wow, pingtang, what camera did you use for that Fisichella practice run picture? got a really interesting focus there, n plus the natural lighting was at overcast, i think for cars going as fast as F1 i can only get that shot with a D2H with a f/2.8 and a high shutterspeed under good lighting to make it work. well that's how i shot lacrosse photos.

anyway, does anyone have a site where i can go n check on numerous semi high resolution pictures or scans of the older GP500 series. I am still working on the '86 Gardner NSR500. however when i compared the manual to the new '86 NSR500 factory color that just came out, a lot of the color for the parts differed. some difference were because of tamiya's updates on paints, such as titanium gold and Ti silver. But problems such as the older one had X-18 semigloss black for the foot pedal but the new one has XF-16, occured in numerous places. one is world GP and one is all japan GP, but do even the chains have to be in different colors (as in materials)?? they are both by HRC in the same year. so yea, i'd appreaciated it if anyone has several pictures on it to share. thanks.

For that shot I used a Nikon Coolpix 5400 digital. Can't remember the exact settings for it, but for those type of shots I set it to about f5 or 6. Then I use a longer shutter speed and pan with the car. That way, you blur the background and keep the car sharp (makes it look like it's going fast). If you time it right, you get a good pic like that, but if you go too quick or slow it ends up like this pic of Michael Schumacher:



Still not a bad pic, but I don't think it's as nice as the Fisi one. If you use a fast shutter speed, everything is sharp so it looks like the car is sitting still (makes it look boring). Like this one of Jacques Villeneuve. He was actually travelling pretty quick there, but it looks like he's parked it:



The day was fairly overcast, so the lighting was pretty soft. Only problem was the rain.......Typical Melbourne weather.

I'll have a look and see if I can find some pics of the '86 NSR500. Might have a few books with some pics here.

So this turned out to be a F1 thread did it ??

I don't really remember if I've posted it earlier but I will of coarse move my three rcv builds from the rcv GB to this one. The Camel 03 and Pramac 03 is as good as done, mabe 5% left. The Teléfonica needs some more attention as the paint job was a failure and I haven't got myself together to fix it.

I'm planning on buying the two Studio 27 transkits for the 2003 M1:s. The price is a bit steep but I want them for my line up anyway. I think it's mabe that sheet you saw at Mediamix Pingtang?? I know S27 released the sheet to stand alone from the transkit as well.

I'm also hoping to put my hands on a 04/05 Kawasaki ZX-RR and a 01 250 Aprilia during fall, both full resin kits. This could be interesting!

Pop Rod Rutherford from the Yahoo forum a mail (you can get it at www.raggeddesigns.com) and see what he can do. It is Max (Max motomodeling) that is doing the Kawa and if I don't remember incorrectly it is Uta that is doing the Aprilia.

The general admissions I got were $55US a piece, and an extra $15 for turn 11 grandstand seating. I don't know what they've got left, I ordered mine back in November. Try looking on Laguna Seca's website to see what's left, I suppose. Probebly NO hotel rooms anywhere in the area left, from what I'm told. In case anybody was thinking about going.

Woww.....thats quite cosly. Malaysian fans should feel really lucky that we don't have to pay so much for the ticket and yet sadly to say that no.s of spectators is nothing came close to thoose in the western countries especially spanish and italian fans. Make sure you wear a bright yellow t-shirt so that we can spot you Yamafreak!

The only way we'll spot you at the race is if you stay in the grand stand after the race......Everyone else seems to invade the circuit. Or.......you could do the opposite. Invade the circuit during the race. Then we're sure to see you.

Or when ol Vale is doing his victory burnout, I could knock him off his ride and get a heck of a reference for all of us doing M1's I wonder just how unpleasent California prisons are nowadays? Seriously, me and the Mrs. are really looking forward to this. I'm here in Fort Worth, Texas, Colin Edward's home state. So he'll be at the top of my must-try-to-get-the-wife-to-obtain-an-autograph-from list. Women always seem to have an easier time with that, I've noticed. And cupcai, you should see how much people pay for NASCAR tickets here. Believe me, this is a bargain! Definitely look for lots of pics from me. I'm even going to try and get some of the AMA guys who will also be there. And back to our original subject, I think that I'll be putting off my one-handed construction of my Rossi M1 until after we get back. Looking forward to seeing you guy's stuff!

AND I ALSO SAW on HLJ's website the decals for Barros' M1 as it appeared in '03. Looks different, how hard is it to convert an '04 kit to '03? And based on some of what I've read here, I'm considering a re-do of my #15 Telefonica RC. But, for what HLJ wants for the set of Museum Collection decals, I could almost get a complete kit. Anyone have a source, or better yet, spare set they're willing to sell? Seeing Rossi's M1 and Sete's RC sitting alongside each other on my shelf wearing the exact same color is disheartening to me. Any help is appreciated.
