MARPAT Vignette “Over The Edge” Finished (For Now- 5/1/09)
Posted by psstoff995 on Friday, May 1, 2009 10:38 AM

Thanks for the critique on the highlights, the main thing I worked on was the tri-color parka's right sleeve, I also hit the front man's vest. I tried to get some washes and shading into the MARPAT, but after doing the front knee (see picture) my technique kind of began to wash out the colors- which I liked on the legs/knees as they’d get dirty. But other than that, it was too heavy for the sleeves in my opinion.
I’ll probably go back in with some pastels if I can find my set at home, not sure where I left it, but that’ll be in 2 weeks minimum. If I do, I’ll make one last update with that, but for now, I’m going to call it finished. I think all major painting and construction is done, from this point it’s just minor tweak work. I’ll be looking for a local model show to enter it into. Do I have to be a member of any kind of club to do that? Or can I just freelance it?

Alright- can do, I'm better at highlights than shadows anyway Tongue [:P]

That's what I was planning on doing for the powders, just have to find the time to get out to a Michaels- thanks model! Smile [:)]

Chris,

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but give these guys a little more dry brushing before moving on to dusting. And as far as pastels go .... you don't need the expensive stuff from MIG, but go by your local hobby shop (hobby lobby will do) and pick up a box of pastel chalks. They don't have ALL the colors, but for $5-6, they've got what you need.

For now I'm calling these two finished. They've gone about as far as I can take them- don't have any weathering pastels at this point. Not sure if I'll mount this to a square black base as well?

Here’s my ACU attempt, it’s 2D, but the figure is around 1/15-1/14-ish scale. It’s on a 4x6 canvas. I used hints of green because I couldn’t do it just using gray and tan, looked too... I don’t know.

Practicing for my 1/35 scale modern figures.

Nice job, Chris. Getting this thing weathered and get it to a show. Don't think about it ... just do it. You'll be glad you did.

haha yeah I can't finish before you!! (Don't worry, I couldn’t find the pastels to pack, so you have quite a bit of extra time before I get my hands on some dirt weathering powders lol)

haha no no it's cool, go ahead and comment on whatever you want, I was just giving you a hard time about the grenades (but thanks for liking them! Smile [:)]). But yeah, the uniform green isn't that bad, at least it's not neon! But it’s no “camo junkie tan“ like it should be. Tongue [:P]

Glad you’ve enjoyed the process, thanks for the thumbs up. I’ve got the radio wiring to do and that’s the last big hurdle, everything else is just clear coat and subtle weathering.

sorry man, took me a sec to realize what your talking about...lol. i thought i was talking about eveything but let me clarify...i like the grenades alot. you did a great job on them. as for the green i was simply saying after seeing them up close that the color isnt as bad as you implied. it works and over all doesnt ake away from the look. i also figured (and didnt have to ask) that you were gonna do something with the slings.

dude i always liked these figs even b4 we started talking back when you first posted the wip. anything different and modern i like and you did a great job! Thumbs Up [tup] and yes...nice that you actually DO work!! lol. j/k. Make a Toast [#toast]

hahaha it took me a bit (Dunce [D)]) to figure out that you were talking about the 3-tone, I thought you were talking about the shine on the green sling. I was like eek! I’m going to flat coat it!! hahaha but yeah, the greens kinda yick. Thanks thought, how are the ‘nades?? Tongue [:P] Pretty cool when I actually do work- huh?! Huh?!?! Approve [^] lol jk

haha thanks camo! I used some Magic Sculpt in places where the tape wasn’t really butting up against the figure and the super glue was taking too long to grab hold. (I need a “faster” glue? Black Eye [B)])

Aaaand figured I could go ahead and paint the smoke grenades while I was on a roll. Tongue [:P]

Wooo! Updates! Finished both masking tape slings... what a PITA!! haha not really the material, just painting it while it was all on a painted model and trying to figure out how best to attach it... but it turned out much nicer than I thought and easier to paint than foil would have been. Plus I have enough masking tape to last a lifetime!!

Hey camo- sounds good to me (you getting into 1/16 haha maybe not so much the 1/2 guitar Tongue [:P]) ...hmm well unless you were doing a 1/2 Hummer and MC over here was going to put a motor into his 1/48 bird...

As far as tips go, you can probably tell me more about which colors to use- but I found this little cartoon "side by side" to be helpful (although I have no idea how that female got her hair so long and didn't manage to pick up a long rife as every Marine is a rifleman first...)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/MARPAT_combat.jpg

You'll notice that from this "stand off" scale, one big difference in the desert MARPAT from the woodland is the desert is much more a solid color, and the one thing that really stands out are the little brown digi pieces. It's also much less "pattern" than the woodland, which almost has some tiger stripe thing going on similar to MC's ACU OIF guy.

Other than that haha all I really have for you is use a tiny brush and be prepared to go over it a few times with the base coat to keep the brown spots under control.

Here're a few more links (hope they last long enough- just google MARPAT or MARPAT desert)

well, even if ya dont keep the name i still like the final result. ya did good kid especially for giving the marpat a try. i still think maybe you should have a partial guitar sticking out of the ground....ALRIGHT DONT THEN MAN....SO WHAT IF IT'D LOOK STUPID....lol. Keep up the good work p.o. and i guess i'll have to try my hand at the 120mm have a few figs. did the desert storm saw gunner awhile back and actually sold it this past summer (wish i'd taken a few pics of it b4 hand). he really liked how it came out. oh well, got a marine sitting there at home and its just screaming MARPAT...so pass some tips my way buddy!!

First off- everyone knows U2- that's that thing that Bono does when he's not saving the earth? Right?

I googled "the edge u2" and couldn't stop laughing!!! You're right!
