So here I am... starting this larger scale soldier to practise my figure painting skills, and hopefully one day be a great figure painter Smile [:)]

All I have done yet is cleaned the head for mouldlines and such, primed it and painted a little... As I looked at the pictures I saw the extreme highlighting came a little bad, so I am going to redo that...   This is one of my first faces that I try to do seriously, and my first figure bigger than 1/35.  I still have to fix the eyes, eyebrows, hair, lips and so on...

Tha paint is a little pricky... But it is the best I can do at the moment.

Intro picture:

Front and side:

360°:

And then I ask, any suggestions on how to paint the hair, hopefully dark blonde?

Thanks for any comments, suggestions and questions!   And more will come Smile [:)]

Great start Huxy! Well on your way...I have never tried anything over 1/35....it seems like it would be easier but you really have to make it look good at that size, like my 35 boys, black dots just won't do it for pupils! Like the skin tone so far also...can't wait to see more...oh yea...of course hes blonde! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanks, thanks, Stern0. It'll be my first bigger than 1/16 and one of my first figures... wohoo!  Exactly how well I can do it I don't know.. But I do my best!! So, here's a little update..

Better pictures of the uniform..

And the head after it's fixes and additions... The eyes were rather bad, but they have been retouched now... Just need the pupils inside the eyes!

And again, any tips on painting the hair? Smile [:)]

The uniform looks great! Did the strap come like that or did you make it? The head is comming along too..the eyes are much better. As far as the hair goes, I havn't done much, I would paint it a dirty blonde then give it a darker wash to bring out the detail. Keep it going!!!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I'll do some experimenting on the hair....  As for the strap, it came like this... I haven't added anything, but the paint...

Here's some older pictures from the day I bought the set.. shows the parts:

And the straps shown here:

Thanks again though! Big Smile [:D]

Hi Huxy,

looking good so far.

A word of advice as I've built this figure, test fit, test fit and test fit. the arm and hand resting on the MG 42 otherwise you may run into problems getting the hand to rest correctly.

For what its' worth I ended up making a new sling for the MG to get it to fit.

looking forward to more photos

Thanks for that, spong.

Well, I am a testfitter Smile [:)]  But thanks for the warning, I'll pay extra attention!!

Update:

So I tried to get the hair blonde... Hearing that this is one of the hardest colours to do, I gave it a try on a small portion of the head.... Now what, is that gore or spaghetti?

Anyways, painted the head brown.. 3 Shades... When I did the first coat of brown, I started at front of the head and went around... When I came around and got to see his face again, I was like "Hey, who are you? What did you do to my figure??"... Like, it changed so much!!

Also painted the collar part and installed it all togheter!

Note the solid black shade I added to the main webbing. Before it was black grey, but... Techniques, Techniques and techniques Smile [:)]

Note the blue serviceshirt.. I am fully aware that the shirt blue is exagerated, but I used some good old artistic license to give the lad some extra colour:

Hope you all like it, and thanks for any help!! Big Smile [:D]

Thanks again, Stern0 and Dougumus!

Here's 10 more pictures with the usual captions... Big Smile [:D]

So my birthday was yesterday (2 hours into 1st February now) and turned 17...  Talked to my dad in the morning over the phone about towercranes and war history (It's usual chat between me and him) and I woke up and left my bedroom which is enclosed to all light...   At once the door opened I was about to fall back in... SUN!!!! Sun for the first time for months!! It was... strong...

So here's a picture of him in the sun...  And the face is still not touched up...

And a picture of while the arms was finished painted:

I tought it might be way easier to get the Grossdeutschland armband decal on the arm before I attach it to the figure.. So I did, with some very careful lining, and one accident, and a little more lining, it came out a little tiny bit crocked...  Is it as bad as I believe and should sand it down, or it is OK?

I also primed the hands themselves and painted the sleeves of the serviceshirt in the usual blue. This time a little extra exagerated, as they will be very hidden... The plasticcard helped alot Smile [:)]

And the MG 42 got assembled, and muzzle end drilled out..

Testfitting shows it went on well, so I saved myself alot of work here, Sponge!!!

And then the MG 42 got painted... Yes, I took a wire and looped it, twisted it and stuck it in the muzzle to have something to grip while priming and painting...  The toothpicks were to thick and if I trimmed them down they would just snap...

So the puzzle is finally coming together.. Any comments, suggestions and questions is highly appriciated!! Big Smile [:D]

SWEET job on the MG! The skin tone looks a liiiittle bit monotone, but I think overal- this is a really nice job. If you're doing this a practice for figure painting (1/35?) I think you're doing great! Nice job with that sleeve decal. I think you're definitly on the right track. Sorry the blond hair didn't work out, it looked like you were making a zombie Nazi for a second Laugh [(-D] just kiddin.

Nazi zombie? Well, perhaps.. But I was going for Italian spaghetti...

Anyways, Thanks.. I wasn't too sure the MG came out good..  But if you say so, I guess it did! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The skin looks a little monotone, yes... Reason, I got too covered aways with the lighter shades and covered more than intended.. It'll improve Smile [:)]

I am mainly doing 1/35, yes. And this was a practicefigure for figurepainting, yes.

Haven't gotten too much done, just a little bit more on the hands... Also started slightly on equipment..

haha brain... spaghetti- same thing Tongue [:P]

the MG looks like metal to me, I usually prefer the wooden stock to the synthetic? or the black painted wood?? Not sure... but I understand it to be accurate and it definitly sounds tactical.

it's ok, my skin tones look the same anyway... it's all good.

I've heard talking of that MG34s had a Bakelite stock, never wood. I cannot be sure of this, and then I cannot be sure for the MG42.. I couldn't find any info on it, and all pictures I saw in my archive showed all bakelite black or brown stocks for the 42..   Problem is, brown bakelite stocks looks VERY similar to wooden stocks...    So I know bakelite is authentic, but couldn't be sure on a wooden one.. And besides, I can't paint wood Tongue [:P]

You're dealing with a tough face as a pallette. Some time ago, someone was talking about it. The two sides of he face don't match. The left side is not a mirror image of the right. So gettuing it to look good will be tougher tahn a really good sculpt.

Someone else was asking about a 120mm face he was painting. Some of what I said to him appiles  here.

You might want to add highlights along the ridge of the nose, the chin, the upper edge of the lip and on the two folds of skin under the nose. Carry the nose ridge highlight to the upper edges of the nostril flare. Add highlight to the central part of the ear. Also increase the cheek highlight and bring it down along the outer edge of the frown line. Also along the top of the eyelid. Add a highlight on the adam's apple.

Add some shadows to the hollow of the cheeks, in the frown line, in the cleft of the chin, above the eyelid, in the space between the raised flesh under the nose, under the neck, along the hairline, in the hollows of the ears and behind the ears. Add shadows below the adam's apple .

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Makes sense to me Huxy! Again, it looks nice.

And thanks for the info on the bakelite- I hadn't even known what it was called!

Thanks, Psstoff

And ajlafleche,  Thanks! I'm working on those...

Here's some pictures. Far from the best, but you see...  and I notice I have to fix the hands as well...

Here he is now.

His MG hand:

His free hand:

His face after several touch ups:

And of course, I managed to ruin the MG muzzle... I tried several things to repair it, but it was FUBAR.. So, a protective sleeve that I sculpted myself was the only good fix...

A better view:

The Lüger holster:

The MG tool pouch (Think this came out very well):

The canteen under work in progres:

And the jackboot.. Think this came out good aswell..

And, my location just now!

Enjoy it, hope you like, and waiting for comments! Smile [:)]

Hux,

The figure's coming out great! Don't be afraid of techniques that you haven't mastered yet. Try them out on some spare sprue ... I think that you'll be suprised at how easy some "difficult" techniques can be.

Ditto on the the nice save with the MG. Not even hours after I finished my recent OIF figure did I drop him, breaking the M4 to pieces ... THANK GOODNESS for CA glue and toothpicks!!!

Keep up the good work!

And techniques, yeah.. I try out new things often! Smile [:)]

And breaking a part is just horrible.. hah... And, what's the difference of CA and superglue actually??

Anyways, here's the 1/16 guy..
What is that? BOOTS?? And equipment??

The backside.. notice the weathering of the canteencup.

And a darker picture to show better the breadbag:

And the gasmask container... Is this approoved? You guys think it looks good?

Thanks! Comments, suggestions and tips are always welcome!!

Yes, I'm done with the figure himself, and I'm downright tired now. Will fix the base tomorrow before I leave.

The decals went on pretty nice. The only wash I added was a tiny pinwash to enhance detail. It went good, I say.

And an "older" picture, a few hours old... I got the comment that it looked like a propaganda poster picture.. It sure does! (Comment from IPMS NOR forum)

Enjoy!!

Great build.. I too am loving the Tamiya 1/16 lineup. I have the Wehrmacht Great coat MG gunner, the Loader with tripod on manouver, the reversible winter uniform figure w MP44 and Im currently finishing up the elite infantry with pea dot camo w/ MP40. Also in the works is a Verlinden winter warrior figure that I plan on displaying with one of the tamiya figures along with a verlinden 1/16 ruined building. Perhaps a Stalingrad scene w lots of snow:)

P.S. I also have painted a few blonde German figures and my method is to lay down a brown base. Then mix brown with some sienna and a bit of yellow and drydrush over the base. Then I gradually use more yellow and less sienna and finally a bit of yellow mixed w/ light skin tone for the final highlights.. I then follow this with a wash of brown w/ sienna....

Excellent, I see no glaring errors (what more can you ask for?). The uniform is a little flat, but the equipment helps break that up. What base will he be on?

Thanks, Tacobuff and Model Maniac!

JWalker, indeed the Tamiya 1/16 line is good. I haven't tried Verlinden yet, but will soon. Not 1/16 tough...

'Aight... base done. No fancy scenic things, just simple, brushpainted base.

Woohoo!

So there you see the base.. Simple one that came with the kit.
