Think180 Studios - 1/35 Navy SEAL (COMPLETE 26AUG09)
Posted by modelchasm on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 12:39 PM

This is a new piece that I started the other day while needing a break from my other builds. Its a 1/35 US Navy SEAL, #35007, from (now debunked ... I think) THINK180 Studios and sculpted by Jeff Meckley. The package says US Navy SEAL #1, which makes me think that they had more figures in mind. After starting this one up, I find myself wishing they had produced more. I got this kit from a model show that I went to here in Houston a few months back. I think I paid $10 for it. Not bad at all.

Cast in white resin, the figure was pretty clean right out of the package. Not too much to clean up. Although the white resin did make the figure a little hard to see. Priming the figure before painting made all the difference. In putting the figure together, I used my normal pin/ wire-in-joint maethod.

And b/c this is just one, stand along figure, there's really not too much else to say about this one. I got the flesh started and completed this morning. I'll be starting in on the uniform this afternoon (as I'm painting my MH-6 pilots at the same time.)

Base coat of flesh...

Dark washes of burnt sienna ...

Some blending w/ warm flesh tone ...

And lastly, highlights added ....

This will be one of, hopefully, 4-5 pieces that I plan on taking to a show next month. I plan on placing this one on a small wooden base, using a Navy SEAL challenge coin as a "name plate".

As always, any C&C welcome. Thanks for checking this one out.

**Edit ... GOOD LORD, these pictures make the paint job look horrible!!!

This figure is actually one of the better OOB that I've seen. Armorama has a couple of in-box reviews for other Think180 figures, and others have the same rave for their figures. Just wish they were still available. Don-know .... Jeff Meckley is on Armorama ... maybe we shoudl ask'm!?!

you know that's funny scott, i was just noticing this the other day and now i noticed it with this figure...although its the opposite, all my figures are molded as right handed...this is the first that i've ever seen molded left handed. i never thought they did that!! i dont know just funny since i noticed that is all. figured everything was right handed. interesting.

AND WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! I was wondering when someone was going to notice that. AND it IS funny b/c I didn't even notice it until I was right in the middle of test fitting all the pieces. Everything was going/ fitting together smoothly, but there was something that just didn't seem right about it ... and I just couldn't put my finger on it.

It's a nice change of pace ..... doing a lefty, doing a stand-alone figure in 1/35. I broke my own rule on this one though .... no molds or casts were made. (Kicking self in tail ....) this one might just be a one of a kind .... even build OOB!

no molds...even with the company out of business...hmmmm...that's not like you scott. what gives?? i have to totally agree with you that it must be a one of a kind being left handed!!! what made me notice it was his pistol was on the opposite leg then it got me to really "looking at it" and yeah...its left handed!! i just find it weird since i was just noticing the "hand" on mine. pretty cool though.

Laugh [(-D] ....Actually, the very point at which I noticed it, I was trying to put the M4 in the right hand and it just wouldn't fit. THEN ... I looked at the box art. Made for a nice "smack in the forehead" moment ... DOOO!!

***UPDATE***

So, I finished w/ the painting this afternoon, but then I noticed that I didn't really take any in-progress shots except for these ...

Here's the base coat w/ the dak tan used on the vest, holster, and helmet.

And now ... fast forward to the future .... From here, all I've got left is to finish up the base and then attach the figure. On another note, the "finished" figure isn't quite finished. Just now, I noticed that I have completely forgotten to seal the figure w/ a dull coat. No big deal, but I'll have to go back and add Future back to the lens. Oh well ... here "she" is ...

Sorry again for the lack of in-progress shots. We'll do better next time.

As always ... all C&Cs welcome.

EDIT: Forgot to add that I'm going to add a reversed full-color flag to the chest for a spice of color.

I was going to say- lefty pistol and then I saw the M4 too. My lbro is a lefty and wants/ed to be a SEAL for the longest time, so I might have to ebay this kit. Such a shame that theyre OOB (not box- biz).

And I was also going to say, nice yellow trick, looks like it works on the tan as well, although I might blend it a little more next time on the tan, or add some extra tan to the yellow, just because it looks a little harsh (maybe just the camera??)

I don't know if this was a crazy quick build or my new apartment move in just really messed me up. I'll check the start and finish dates after I post. Tom's got the eyes though- I'll give him that, must be all the 1/35 modern guys he's done in the last 9 months!! And Scott- trying to shove it into the right hand and then no molds?! Not enough coffee huh?? Tongue [:P] haha this is a great little figure- can't wait to see the whole set up with the challenge coin. I know you can buy them online all over the place, but whats the idea behind those? How are you really supposed to acquire them?

haha .... then I won't tell you that the before (base coats pics) pic was taken this morning .... God I love acylics! hehe!!!

Good luck finding this kit ... if you can find ANY Think180 kits, you're a lucky man.

And yes, you're right about the yellow ... there are a couple of spot that got carried away. Since this one is going to show next month, I'll be cleaning it up just a bit more.

Stay tuned ....

Thanks for not letting me know it took 1 DAY!!! for all that detail work Bow [bow]

Yeah, after spending a while on ebay with a few different keywords... I’ll agree. When you guys were talking rare, you weren’t kidding. Saved the searches so we'll see...

I will indeed stay tuned. How often (now that they have the OD/Tan flags) do you see the full colored? Do SF units still wear them? I can understand the need for low visibility in a large force so they don't stand out- but is there also a need for high visibility in a chaotic environment/clearing a house/close quarters type situation where the full color flags would be advantageous? Just wondering if this is pure artistic license and you wanted some color, or if this is based in reality. I agree that the color would be nice, just wondering.

Sigh [sigh] i'm sitting here and thinking i'm hearing gatling gun noises...haha, forgot it was the selfridge air show this weekend. (not a very nice day, it looks like rain). of course the gate doesnt open for another 1/2 hour...maybe it ssomething else...although you cant mistake an a-10's primary weapon when fired!! hmmmm...!

That is some truly amazing shadowing and highlighting that you've got going on there, very nice.

Thanks guys ... I appreciate all the comments. I can't help but think/ hope that someone somewhere has these molds and that they will resurface sooner rather than later.

As far as color or subdued ... in the Spec Ops world it really doesn't matter. A lot of times you'll see guys wearing full color just for friendly ID.

But ... If you really thing about ... is a full color flag something you're really going to notice when someone blows open your door in the middle of the night with a water-charge? I don't know about the SEALs, but I think that it would add a nice shot of color to an otherwise blah tan figure. Plus, I'm hoping that the color will help tie in the coin on the base. Here a pic of the coin I'm using.

The front of the coin, w/ the SEAL emblem, will be the side used, w/ the other side permanantly attached to the base.

exactly like you have said model. i'm looking down the barrel of the gun pointed at my head once i can get the dust out of my eyes from the blown door or the blinding light out of them from the flash of the grenade! therefore, color really isnt an issue also, like you said, its good to give it a little "pizaz (sp?) now and again.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The subdued makes sense if youre just standing around/patrolling in the open. I like the idea of the color- but don't think this guys all boring tan and blah, you did a great job with the shading and highlighting, he looks vibrant. Looking forward to the tweaking, flag, and base!

Vibrant huh .... That's a new one to me, but thanks. I'm trying to decide how much "tweaking/ cleaning up" I need to do. I like the loook of it now, but then I look at other figures and all the colors seem so smooth.

I'm done w/ all my chores today, so I'm going to get to work on the base.

You guys have any ideas for the groundwork on this one. I'm drawing a blank here. I don't really want to do a plain-jane ground work like I did on my SF fig, but at the same time I don't want to go all out and distract from the figure either.

haha sorry, just meant that with your shading and highlight work, it really pops, it's not just bleh, even though it's all tan and OD. Any chance on some comparison shots with the other "smooth" figures? I kind of like the look of this guy, but I know those winning 1/35 figures almost look airbrushed... crazy smooth.

Maybe a low cinderblock wall? He kind of looks really forward with his stance, but his right hand is so drawn in, almost CQB looking... hmm. I agree- nothing over the top or distracting. I'm sure you'll figure something that will fit...

scott, maybe just a simple corner of a building. just two sides. only has to be a little bit bigger than the figure. do the spackling brick showing through thing....huh...maybe?? Whistling [:-^]

btw chris, ya notice how much closer i am to you??? about 19 away...Big Smile [:D] (not that it means anything!!)

What?!!? Yeah, I've slowed way down, glad you're picking up the slack. I'm sure you'll pass me by tomorrow. haha

I agree on the building corner, only thing is it looks like the SEALs moving at a pretty good clip, so I wouldn't have him running around the corner? And I'm assuming the corner would be more L shaped from above, not symmetrical. I'd have him running parallel to the long wall of the L if you go for a corner. Have him coming up on the corner, like he's slowing down and about to turn perhaps?

Don't know if it's bigger or more complex than you were looking for, I guess you could control the amount of detail on the wall, it could be all shot up and spray painted or just any old wall with maybe some brick detail or a blue “architectural” stripe (as opposed to graffiti) or something like that.

wow chris, its like your reading my mind. the drawing is excellent and gets the point across very well!! good job! Big Smile [:D] in this case scott i would use two small pieces of styrene for the walls with the spackle. it actually looks like a fun build and pretty damn easy! maybe lean an a.k. up against the "small" L side for a little "drama"!?!? i myself am going to use that and put something together like that!!! Cool [8D]
