Is this a new movie that's coming out?  If so, when?

It's used in a commercial for pachinko, currently running on TV over here right now. I wish it was something more noble than that, but there it is...

Still, it is indeed very cool!

What a teaser!!! I wish they would make a full length feature like that!!!That and Robotech. I loved watching the Star Blazers cartoons as a kid. My neighbor and my older brother used to build the old ban-dai kits as well. I used to love going over there to see them hanging from the ceiling. I do believe this is what influenced me into building models. All this at age 4...:)

Falschimjager,

Why does it look like a battleship?  Because it is one, the Yamato.  The details are a little fuzzy (it's been almost 25 years since I read the comic), but for some reason to save the Earth, the IJN battleship Yamato is salvaged and turned into a space vessel.  Rather than raise it, an undersea base was built (or perhaps already there, fuzzy memory) and once the conversion was complete, it was launched from the ocean floor.  Cool then and cool now.

Well that was awesome!

Really wish there was a full length movie in that syle. I suspect the only people interested would be ones like me, who were kids in the 70's and grew up on Starblazers.

Thanks for the link, TD!

When I started playing the vid, my wife started humming along with the music. :D  She said that when she was in grade school, the band played that song; she described the kids playing their accordions and small xylophones.  I can just imagine all those little Japanese kids feverously hammering away playing that song... just like we did in the US when we played the theme to Star Wars!

Thanks for the link!  It's been years for me, too, since I heard the theme.  I used to watch "Star Blazers" every afternoon with a bunch of friends in high school.

For anyone who isn't familiar with the plot, the Wikipedia article is a pretty good synopsis:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Battleship_Yamato

After Kimba, the White Lion, Tobor the Eight Man, Marine Boy and Speed Racer, this was the coolest cartoon from Japan that I had ever seen.  The plot and the characters were as three-dimensional as many regular movies.  I've been waiting for a good deal on the DVD set, but it's still pretty pricey.

"We must/be strong and brave

Our homes/we've got save

If we don't/in just one year

Mother Earth/will disappear

Our Star Blazers!"

No idea how in went in Japanese, of course.

If Toho's still around, someone should be bugging them to do a new Yamato movie.  Yeah, I know they wrapped up the story and had that 2520 project, but did they let little continuity issues stop them from making new Gojira movies?

Gundam's been going for decades.  Macross has been going for a little over 25 years.  Evangelion's getting a makeover in the form of 4 movies.  It's about time Yamato got a revival.  The fact that the big kit they released last year sold so well despite a $400 price tag should be a hint that the interest is still there.

Love the vid, it looks like the makers got their inspiration from the latest Battlestar Galactica special effects.

I found this little gem, it's some guys having a laugh with the theme tune from my favourite japanese TV show from that era.

What with the success of the Transformers movie, it seems that a live-action Gundam movie or Starblazers would be a natural.  Gundam has been francise for how many years?  How come no live action film? No doubt it would cost abit- but what a success the right film could be.

They did.  And they called it Gundam Savior.  And it sucked...  They need to do more full CG ones along the lines of Gundam Igloo like what Square did for Final Fantasy.

Yes, that is cool, their are rumors floating around for the past few years about doing the Yamato series as a live action movie.  With current CGI it would a wonderful thing to see.  Who knows if the New Star Trek Movie does well this may finally happen,  I just hope it not a flop like so many programs from our childhood that made into live action films.   Keep us posted on these little gems.

I was just looking around on youtube for the video originally posted at the start of this thread and found something.

Apparently there is a new Yamato movie coming out in Japan if it hasn't already been released!  In addition to the Big Ship herself, there's a "Blue Noah" in the preview I saw that looked very strongly influenced by the "Yamato 2520".

Figured I'd mention it for you fellow Yamato/Star Blazers fans.  Hopefully there will be kits and maybe even an American DVD release.

I'm not sure if this is a cut from the movie or an extended trailer.

I believe the Movie is already playing in Japan.  Has not hit the States yet.  As most already know Bandia has released the monster 1/350 multi-function, get this now $800.00 dollar, version of the Starblazer Yamato.  I had a chance to snag one off of eBay a month ago and let it pass because I thought the $450.00 Buy Now was too steep, boy what a mistake that was.  Then I started looking for the next largest one I could find, found 1, uno, one, on eBay of the 1/500 and have not seen anymore other than a double set for $250.00 I believe.  I was a young man in the early 70's and fascinated by Japanese Sci-Fi and always thought what a cool model, a WWII BB that was sunk, re-built and made able to travel under, over water, fly, and go into deep space.  Man you just gotta love that.  So I lost the BIG ONE, but did catch the next best and hope to post in the near future as a WIP.  I will also go see the Movie if we get it here, sub titles and all.Captain

PS: Has anyone noticed how many hits this thread has had, just an indicator of the interest in this subjectSurprise

You could scratch build it out of the Yamato model in 1/350 scale, 1/144 scale sub and a 1/32 scale F-16 These 3 kits should have most of your parts.

Hello SuppresionFire, I must admit, I am in noway a scratch builder.  There are a couple of Ma.K vehicles I would love to build, but do so requires you to do as you have suggested and my skills are not that advanced.  But hey @ least I know what you need to build this puppy.  The reason I like the 1/350 Bandia version is all of the neat little sounds and special effects that it will do by command. I am curious though, what 1/144 sub does it take and is there a site or web location that demos this process of scratch building a Space Battleship Yamato.  I have watched the 6 part build on You Tube and learned a great deal of how to improve the already excellent 1/500 kit.  Again thanks for your help and I do so hope others will jump on board and maybe post some photos of their Space Yamato.Captain

A German Mk VII or a US Gato class would work, I am just putting out suggestions to build a unique 'Spaceship Yamato' without laying down the expense of the kit you mentioned. Being Si-Fi it can turn out differently, perhaps a sister ship to the original. A aluminum tube down the middle could be lighted to simulate the afterburners and tinted blue in the front to simulate the super weapon.

I never actually saw a 'Spaceship Yamato' until this thread, watching it I thought it could be scratch built  out of the three kits I listed.
