Gundam RX-78-2 Close Combat Mobile Suit 1/100
Posted by Gunpla Master on Thursday, May 27, 2010 6:53 PM

I would like to introduce you to my current project.  A 1/100th scale Gunpla as termed in Japan, we here refer to them as Gundam.  The name Gundam comes from two sources, 1st Gun meaning large/heavy weapon and 2nd dam comes from the word Freedom.  I guess a way to translate the word, would to be say Gun Freedom.  These are piloted combat robots that are the for runners to the poplar Transformers as most have seen in the movies.  I will be posting photos soon of the this build, to show just how neat the modeling of these Mobile Combat Suits is.  Hope you enjoy.

Welcome my friend, you need not give us a background on gundam, though it is welcome, you will find a few, including me, that know more then enough about the series, it's mechs, and its backstory.

and since you said it.  Gunpla short hand for Gundam Plastic Model Kit.

your RX is going to have some competition in a little bit, just got my Zaku II 2.0 in the mail today, just waiting on some supplies before I start her, and yes, I am a Zeon supporter.

SEIG ZEON!

also, welcome, good to have other gundam fans here.

Thanks for your welcome Herr smeagol, say is that name not the Golem's?  Anyhow, looking forward to your build as well.  I hope I did not bore anyone with my little history lesson, just  I am excited to post a build here after so long a time away from plastic modeling.  A friend got me interested with his build and  I hope to get him to post his as well.  I see from the number of your post you have contributed much here and I do believe I have came across you on other Gundam Forums too.  Hope to learn from you.  What extras did you purchase, so far all I have bought sep from the kit was a stand and water slide decals, though I am a detail freak and all the pretty little bling bling parts call to me, I am trying to build as comes in kit for right now.  Though I have already done some surgery to the first hand I have built.

we have all done surgery to our hands at one time or another.

Im not using many AM parts, just going to use metal chain instead of the plastic for the power cables on the legs sides and head if I can.

I have posted my stuff on Bakuc.com and a long time ago on hobbyfanatics.  In both cases I have improved greatly since then

So what RX did you get?  2.0?  Any idea of what color scheme you are going to use?  Also, where are you from/where did you get the kit from

I will try to answer your questions:  The kit I purchased from eBay, you can purchase them from a local Hobby Shop, but they are very limited in what they have.  The first Gunpla to get my attention was the life size version built in Japan and my friend that introduced me to them, said the series started w/this Mobile Suit.  So that is where I began with my building.  I intend to color as shown on the box, but do wish to add a bit more depth with a worn and weathered look as if after being in combat.  Have some really nice drawings depicting this scheme.  The version as listed on the instruction sheet says:  RX-78-2 Gundam, E.F.S.F Prototype Close-Combat Mobile Suit, 1/100 MG Ver.ONE Year War 0079.  This also came with optional clear parts for some locations of the armour.  I live in N.C. and have been modeling my whole adult life.  I had stopped plastic for awhile and have built every type you can name, but these Fighting Suits are new to me and I am again having a great time playing.

I have a J

I already had this kit, but when spraypainting it (LONG TIME AGO) a part blew away in the basement and rendered it unfinishable.

Now that I have this puppy figured out and can run w/the big dogs, I challenge all to post a build of your current Gundam project , mind you not a race to build, but a build thread of the many different types of Gunpla that is out there.  I look forward to each and all so I can glean from your talents and your skills. So what do you say, the gauntlet has been dropped.Cool

I did some research today and found a great and informative article on this very kit and was surprised to read that this other than a completely clear version is @ the top of the food chain f/Bandai's redo of this kit, which appears has been around for along time.  Now as far as the color scheme, I was interested by what the fella who built the model in the article said about color differances between the differant years the kit has been produced and featured in the Gunpla Story.  Seems that the two main color schemes I found are as follows, 1st the version as done f/the Gundam OYW resulting as depected on the cover of the box and the next is a version w/pastel colors ie: the red is almost a pink, the blue pale and the yellow almost orange.  The white has a tan hue with the frame a dark gray.  I believe the fella remarked this version was as the RX-78-2 as appears in the video game!  Now he built his this color and I admit I do like the look.  I might do this version w/a weathered and used look.  Thanks for the interest klik.

Seed and 00 are both using recycled designs and recycled storylines.  You can watch Seed and point out exactly what series what is going on was taken from.

I have too admit my knowledge of the who and what about the Gundam Story is an on going process for me, I however did purchase the PG Red Frame ASTRAY because the design appeared to me to be a close resemblance to a Samurai Warrior and I really liked the sword that comes w/the kit.  I have to admit that the individual I purchased from did knock some off the kit and I am looking to purchase the PG RX-78 when I find one here in the USA.  Now do not take me wrong, I know the PG kits are expensive and not everyone can afford and from what I have seen they are just a larger version of MG w/some added features.  But I do like the size and I am old enough I can indulge in my Hobbies, for this reason I purchased, not really because of the part the Suit plays in the Gunpla Story.  To me these Mobile Fighting Suits look like modern suits of armor from the middle ages, that have just been brought up to date with the idea of making them larger, but still worn by a human/or piloted as is the case.  Again I am learning.  But thanks for your pointing out and I believe an individual has the right to express his thoughts on any given subject.

In answer to the question about color/scheme here is the version I am interested in doing w/more weathering and some other paint details.  I did not build this model in the photo, I am only using to demo the color scheme I am interested in doing.[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

Just a foot note to anyone interested in the RX-78-2, this site has a great history and build of this newest offering.  I learned alot here and the fella did a wonderful job on his presentation of this subject MFS.  I really liked the photo above which is his work, the pose reminds me of a Crusader Knight about to do battle with his really long mace.  The site is collectionDX.com. Yea sure.

The picture you linked, look carefully at it.  See that odd sheen on the color, thats because it is not painted.  He just detailed the bare plastic.

the other reason you can tell is that its really REALLY hard to get pastels in hobby paints.
