Guys,

Love this ship and this model! I built it for FSM Workbench Review; look for it in September. Meanwhile, let me know what you think. Critiques and comments welcome.

Cheers, Aaron

Aaron isnt this a fun model to build? Quick ,too!

Did you use the kit decals for the stripes? What setting solution did you use?

4438 just like the real thing there isnt much down there other than the landing gear doors. MLG and NLG looks okay. The two round access panels and oblong panel at the kerf are present like the full size prop.  Aft engine detail is wrong so that will need to be fixed. This is about all you see from the front/bottom if you dont use the gear.

Ti4019,

I painted my stripes because I wanted to use a little salt to chip the paint. Plus I wondered how well the stripes would conform over te engine section under vertical stab. Of course, masking that was no picnic.

Thanks Aaron

yes masking was a chore but worth it when I pulled the tape off. All the prep paid off almost zero underspray. I sealed the tape with my base coat mix.

I used British Crimson, what did you use? I didnt salt it, I will on the next.

I used insignia red. I rushed my masking more than I should have, and got some underspray in a few areas. Weathering and touch up took care of most of the issues.

Looks good.

As for the details being off from the studio set piece, this model is based on and probably used the digital models from Zoic.

The tells are the back end and the horizontal side slots on the forward fuselage.

On the CG model there are small fans in the lower rear, the set piece has lots of tubing and a push bar for the stage crew to move it around with and the side details have the (4) vertical strips flush top and bottom where the set piece has them inset and curve inward at the top.

If you look really closely at the model you can see the forth one just barely.

There are also issues with the ejector seat and a few missing details in the cockpit also the joystick panel in the center does not go all the way to the seat and there is a small red light on the back left side panel.

If you are using the PE set than part "5" needs to be cut into 3 pieces and the second (middle piece) gauge needs to be rotated 90 degrees clock wise also the long slot on the part with the switches needs to be cut out if you are lighting it since there is a red LED clock in there.

If anyone needs pix let me know.

Also on the SyFy website they have a virtual  tour of the Galactica and if you can find your way to the hanger you can sit in and look around the cockpit of both the Mk2 and Mk7.

Wow. That's a nice looking Viper there.

I really like what you did w/ the engines - could you tell us how you painted and weathered them?

I base-coated with Model Master Metallizer gunmetal. Then I sprayed a light coat of stainless steel inside the feathers and the base of the exterior of the cans feathering to toward the open end. I dry-brushed metallic gray, washed with a dark brown artist's oils. Finally, I applied weathering powders: sooty black outside around the opening, then a light gray ash color between the feathers inside.

How big is this thing compared with other planes? Could you stick it next to something similarly sized and photograph it?

just off the top of my head my Tamiya F4F Wildcat is in the same rough size.

my kit DOES fit inside a shoebox with room and padding but it is not tiny by any stretch.

I'll see about a photo, but right now I can tell you that it's on my desk next to a 1/32 scale P-47. The fuselage is a couple inches shorter and there aren't a lot of wings involved so you get the idea. That said it looks great and isn't a shrimp on the table.

When I watched the new BSG series, I have to say that I was not a fan of the MkII Viper design, but I may have to revise my opinion.

The original series Vipers had this sort of brutal simplicity. They were raw and stripped down war machines – a cockpit and some guns bolted on to some huge engines, w/ minimal control surfaces. An uncomplicated, efficient machine, designed to murder Cylons en masse. Awesome.

I thought the newer ones however, were kind of… I don’t know… sporty. A bit fancy. Too much design effort in making it look cool, rather than aiming for efficiency.

That said, looking at this little fighter in recent threads like this, I’m beginning to see the appeal. The large cockpit is especially interesting, and as I said up thread, I’m digging those engines.

Looking forward to the review.

Here's a little photoshop job of what  I was talking about earlier about the PE part on the right side.

Part 6 should be rotated as well as you can see on the picture on the right with the arrow.
