EOI: Anyone for a Macross Group Build?

I remember that the physical height of the Zentradi tended to vary depending on the demands of the plot. Since it happened in a show about transforming fighter planes, I was completely unconcerned  by this.

My YF-19 came in the mail today. Now I no longer have to feel like the wallflower in this GB. For a 1/72 scale model, its larger than I thought it would be, and appears to be as complex as a 1/48 jet fighter kit. I am much pleased.

The variable kits build up nicely, good fit and nice tight seams. You do need to take care though, if you want everything to move as advertised and the movable joints tend to get a bit floppy, but they're nice kits.

Of course there's a couple of compromises for the sake of transformability - the wings are a little short in fighter mode, but a bit long in battroid mode, the tail fins are a little undersize and there's a couple of very noticeable hinge bulges. Back in the day, they were the most desired kits by Macross fans (and the only way, until Hasegawa, to get a 1.72 scale fighter version). The wings have a funny textured surface (the wings on the 1/72 Gerwalks had this too), but this will soon disappear under a coat of paint. You may find a sink mark at the edge of the circular depression on the engine nacelle sides - I've had a few like that. 

I may yet pull out one of the Revell boxed variable kits too.

Yep, that's right.  I don't know about the original Macross, but in Robotech's 2nd episode Roy Fokker tells Rick that the remains of the Zentrans found in the crashed spaceship were seen as a reason to build the giant humanoid mecha and transforming fighters.  When you compare the parts for the kits you showed kits of here, the VF-1 is a 1:72 transforming fighter and the Nasjadeul is a 1:144 scale kit of a powered armor suit!

From what we've seen of some characters, though, the 10m example in your screencap wouldn't be the tallest kid in his class.  There have been some in the shows that seemed almost twice that height.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those Chain Bases. I think my Defender needs to be on one of those...

Here is what I did with my Robotech Factory Kits, sorry no pics kit died during a move.

Replaced the hangar Doors, there are gaps around them that look like they were designed to be cut off.

Made mine slide open diagonally, this also allowed me to make new numbers for the doors from sheet styrene.

Added lights above the hangar doors and in the floor around the turntable(detail is molded in).

A few LED and/or Fiber-optics will sort you out. Today I might a few other lights like red rotating warning lights, etc or maybe even cannibalize a MG Gundam MS Cage,

Added a few other details, like more gantries, pullies and a ground-crew.

Said that today I might ditch the supplied Hangar in exchange for a chain-base, etc.

Same here!  I've never seen them done other than the one in the flyer that came with the Revell Robotech kits and any interest I've had in building one is killed when I see the price tag.

As I said in the other Thread, Robotech Factory is Macross.

The Smaller factory kits are also Macross.

I used to have all the Factory Kits as well as the 3 Dioram kits(1 vac-form base, 3 ground vehicles and 1 Robot/Valkyrie/Gerwalk).

Looking forward to seeing an y of the factory kits being done.

I also have one of the small factory kits,will that do?

Zoltek is the main robot (Dougram) from "Fang of the Sun Dougram" (太陽の牙ダグラム, Taiyō no Kiba Daguramu).

A very nice Anime series with some very cool designs but unfortunately not Macross.

Would the old Robotech Revell kits count?

Many of the Revell Robotech boxings are Macross based, but some are not.

Of the larger boxings:

Robotech "Changers":
Vexar = Imai 1/72 VF-1S Valkyrie
Axoid = Imai 1/72 VF-1J Valkyrie
Orbot = Imai 1/72 VF-1D Valkyrie
(these three are "transformable")

Robotech
Space Fortress SDF-1 = Imai 1/5000 SDF-1 Cruiser mode
Attack Fortress SDF-1 = Arii 1/5000  "Storm Attacker" SDF-1
Robotech Factory = 2x 1/100 Imai(?) "factory" modules with armoured battroid and Destroid Tomahawk mechs

All of the above are Macross. In the Revell Robotech line, there are a number of smaller 1/100 and 1/170 kits (sometimes offered as 2-in-1's) which fall under Macross.

As mentioned, there are others which originate from other series, so let us know what you have and we can tell you if it fits or not.

I think anything on your list would be great. The Monster would be nice too. I've seen one of the 1/200 ones built up and it's ultra cool. 

Okay, looking at the stash, I have a lot of ideas and just need to narrow things down to something like 2. n Here's what I'm considering so far.

- Queadlunn-Rau modified Klan-Klan's Queadlunn-Rea in m Frontier

- VF-25 recon version  with some kind of custom paint and 2 of the drones modified, one to the Galaxy combat variant and the other to the Ghost from M Plus

- VF-0B

- Hasegawa VF-1 battloid, undecided on whether to do the regular, Strike, or Super.

- 1:100 Destroid Spartan or Tomahawk

- VF-25 Ozuma version

- VE-1 Elintseeker

- SV-51 with boosters

- 1:100 Glaug battlepod

I'm also considering the 1:200 HWR-00 Monster, but to get one at a reasonable price I had to get one that was already started.  If I remember right, it only had the upper leg sections, cannon barrel halves, and outer arm sections had put together.  Would that be close enough to "new" for this given the cleanup that'll be needed?  If it is and I end up choosing it for one of my GB contributions, I'll throw in a 1:200 Tomahawk and Spartan for comparison.

Yes man, no problem. I asked because to see if I could mix it with another project.

The time frame for the GB is great. It lets me finish current projects and I plan to start a pure Macross model  by mid/late Novemeber.

We need a little lead time because some of the guys need time to order or are waiting on kits to arrive, but with the long timeframe I don't think anyone will object if you want to start early - it's just for fun and not a contest.

Sep 20th is fine here, gives me time to clear some crud(builds) of the bench and the Wave kit should be released around that time.

Sept. 20 sounds fine to me and I do think that your setting of 12 months is great as it should give people plenty of opportunity to join up along the way(and give me plenty of time to finish!).

Looks like you have a 2-seat option in the 1/72 YF-19 kit too. I've been taking a long hard look at picking up one of those puppies.
