Ed.. I usually just use normal clear tape (office tape 10mm out of a tape despenser).. I also use a generic brand spray can from my local homewares store.. The reason I do this, is the price. But also I find that household spray paints are faster drying.. Also I normally give everything a fair sand in order to rough the surface.. I sometimes get the odd scratch, or lift of paint, but that is to be expected.. Just take your time, and what ever you do, just slowly remove the tape, and not rip at it.. Patience is my worste enemy, so feel for ya.. I never use any (shiny) paints, or paints that have a glossy finish.. Mainly because I can gloss the subject at a later time, but usually if you have to go over something, the paint simply wont stick.. Stick to flat or mat colours where posible, then gloss later..

ps: I leave for work now, but when I get back, I will do up something and take a pic to give you an example..

Hope that helps, Chris

Did a little more on the battlecruiser. Here it is where you can see both tapes on together:

StevenQ, I hope the Blue 3M will work too. I'm using Micro mask right now on the "C" and I tell ya, I have it about 1/2 done & I started it yesterday!! I should be able to spray it in a day or twoShy [8)] I know what ya mean about  takin' a break inbetween sessionsBlindfold [X-)]

Hopefully the blue will work. I stopped using the regular for all masking. Right now I'm masking off panels for the Jemmie battlecruiser. I'm cutting the Tamiya 6mm into about 1mm strips to bend around curves, filling in the voids between with the 3M blue. So far so good, just can't do too much without a break!! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks StevenQ,  I'll try the 3M Blue & see how that does. I'm using the 3M yellow (standard) which I press against my skin a few times before touching the model. Seems the tape does not like the Testors silver paint for some reasonConfused [%-)] I haven't had this problem with other colors, just the silver.

Ed, try Tamiya's 6mm tape or even the 3M blue tape as these have lower tack and don't leave a residue. Home Despot has the 3M.

Thanks Chris, I too am wondering how I'll get along with the little guysConfused [%-)] I just screwed up on the baseGrumpy [|(] looks like I'll have to sand it down most of the wayBlack Eye [B)] The white & silver anyways. I removed the tape & went to remove the "tacky residue" with  Adhesive Remover wipes (which my g.f. gets from the Dr.)  and all it did was liquify the paint!Angry [:(!] Oh well, no biggie, just wasted time & materialsSad [:(] Hey, it's just a practice run right?Smile [:)]
I've started using Micromask on the Ent. "C" saucer section & man, I don't think I could use tape on it. Not after ruining the base!! I'm getting ready to mix up some paints for this. White & Insignia Blue (90% &10%, 80% +20%)
 I'll keep y'all postedBlindfold [X-)]

Will do StevenQ. Don't know when I'll be able to post any pics since I don't have the proper software in this computer for a cameraGrumpy [|(] I do have a cheap  3 in 1 digital but, again, a software issue.
I am taking a break right now from re-painting the base. using testors Blue Metallic flake in the circle with gloss insignia white for the stars (&lettering) the "A" symbol is in  silver & the badge will be in gold. (just sprayed the white).
Now I'll be using Model Masters paints on the ships themselves.Mischief [:-,]

Nice link. The color would still be lighter due to scale, I think. Even without Tomita's decals you can make a nice D. I think JBOT has some less expensive decals for the "A" complete with Aztecing.

Here's the carrier conversion that I'll be putting those decals on:

I have the "D" set, but haven't used them yet. They're for a carrier conversion of the same model. Others have used them and like them. So far its the only "D" set with the aztecing. He sells on E-bay from time to time, but nothing currently.

That is a really nice looking collection yuou have there ChrisBig Smile [:D] Thanks for sharing them with me. Hope it wasn't too much trouble for you to bring them down to the table. (personally I think the table looks great as a backdrop & makes 'em stand out a bit more)
Is that Insignia Blue on the Nacelles on the D?  Duck Egg Blue on the A?  and, the NX-01, is that in the same scale? That's the only one I need to complete my collectionShock [:O] I do have the 1/350 thoThumbs Up [tup]

Ok Ed.. . Here are the pics that I promissed..

Because of a lack of space at the momment, my Enterprise collection has had to sit upstairs away from site, so I got them down and dusted them off, so forgive the kitchen table as the backdrop..

The first pic is of all of them together. As you will notice, I collected all of the stands from my Furuta Enterprise collection and used them to display these guys individually..

I know that you are particularly interested in the Ent-D, but I simply couldnt get a good pic to show the paint scheme I did on it.. When I emailed you, I got my colours mixed up. I actually used Tamiya Light Grey, and Neautral Grey.. I didn't do the aztec, and just painted it in a checker kind of scheme as is on the model. I found that once I hand painted the windows and made up the life boat decals myself, the Ent-D looked quite busy enough.. If you want to go with the aztec, then thats up to you.. I guess I was just a little lazy!.. I actually plan on redoing this one again at some stage with the aztec, and the windows look a little sloppy to me close up.. Cant notice them at a distance, but I am not happy with it..

The next 3 pics are of my Ent-A, and the last is with the TOS Enterprise. The Ent-A was sprayed flat white, and the aztec was hand painted using pearl silver (I think) it was a year ago.. The TOS Enterprise was sprayed Tamiya Light Grey

Hope this all helps..
Chris

Thanks StevenQ for this info. I was thinking of doing the base coat in a lt. gray and work from there. Now that you've mentioned  Dave Tomita's decals... where can I find them? have you used them?

You could try painting it a very light grey and use Dave Tomita's decal set, complete with aztecing. He also makes them for the other 2500 scale ships in those sets.
