1/350 Nagato
Posted by Firedeck on Sunday, January 29, 2012 12:32 PM

Thanks for viewing...I am building Hasegawa's 1/350 Nagato "Battle of Leyte Gulf" using the Lionroar Oct. '44 superset, with some added details from Flyhawk, Veteran Models and Hasegawa (wood deck):

First up is to fix those unfortunate CAD plate engravings on the hull:

Starting the turrets and some secondary guns:

16" main guns:

Oh, this is going to be crazy good!. If it turns out like your Yamato, it's going to be a show-winner.

That PE is awesome.

How long did it take you to get this far?

I've been chipping away on a 1/350 Roma for three weeks and haven't even started with the PE yet.

Thank-you for the kind words, and yes that was me if this is the Yamato you were thinking of :)

And thanks for asking...I have been working on Nagato since August, I hope to have it finished by end May, so we'll see :) ...there are twice as many parts on this Nagato as Yamato, but I am working at a better pace than I did on the first one. It took me quite awhile because I was struggling learning a PE technique that worked for me, so I'm happy that part is over :)   Thanks to everyone for viewing and especially those who have commented. -Tim

Man, you might as well construct the entire model out of brass. LOL Your work is fantastic.

Looks great!

Can you tell me what you used to bend the steps?  I'm afraid that I'll turn my ladders into hash if I try it.

wow, thats amazing, I allways find it crazy to see what kind of work some people put into their ships....
And over such a long period of time....

Really, I love it, and I love the Nagato to, I think I'm gonna follow this to learn some things for when I'm gonna build my ships...

Only got a question, what do you mean with, 'PE technique that fits with me'...
Are there different ones? what are they, got a link or something on that subject?
Would most kindly appreciate it!

Regards Ninetalis.

Tim,

Your Yamato was terrific; your Nagato is going to be exquisite!  However, given your careful attention to detail, I would strongly recommend filing in the CAD lines Hasegawa left on the hull.  Those lines are commonly mistaken for hull plating detail, but they are not.  Hasegawa inadvertently neglected to erase the computer aided drawing lines from their final drafts before casting the hull, leaving the lines molded in the final product. They do not belong on the ship.

In other words, given the strength of what you are doing with the photoetch detail work, you should fill in those lines.  It would be a shame to have them detract from an otherwise outstanding build!

Hi Bill and thanks for your comments and nice words. I agree, Hasegawa made an egregious error with the "excel spreadsheet" plating on the hull...and then they released the sister ship model a year later with the same engravings! I don't understand manufacturers sometimes :). Anyway, yes ... the CAD lines were the first thing I addressed in the build (if you go back to my first post in this thread you will see a couple of pics of the hull and how I attempted to fix those lines, but in the meantime, here's a couple of pics of when I was experimenting with different materials (Mr Surfacer 500, Squadron putty, etc) on the bottom of the hull...and I settled on the Mr Surfacer for the sides.

When filling/sanding, I also noticed a number of high and low area's on the hull, this pic illustrates:

Hi and low areas and CAD lines gone! :)

Hi bsyamato and yes, normally I would paint in a different order than I am for this Nagato. I am doing something different for this build ... so  we'll see how it turns out.  WinkThanks for your nice words and comments!    -Tim

Hi guys and thanks for your comments! Not much new, but got decks 7 and 8 on the superstructure done:

deck 7 assembled and installed on superstructure

deck 8: those japs were big on binoculars :)

*edit* well, just noticed in the pic...there are two distinct ejector marks on the outside binocular deck, hmmm...guess nothing a couple of ammo boxes won't hide, but despite the small flaws (and the one big one of course, the hull lines) the kit fits together wonderfully so far

Hi guys! Another small update, deck 9 of superstructure:

Type 13 radar:

Thanks for viewing and I wanted to ask... am I making too many small posts (...with too many pics of the same thing) or should I condense the build log a little bit and post fewer pics with more progress in each one? Thanks again for viewing and comments and suggestions are welcome.  -Tim

if I recall right, your Yamato didn't win Gold in ships, but won the overall best in show. Still scratching my head on that one.

This is insane work and I'm loving it.
