 Manstein's revenge:

...ummmmmmm...did a few pages just get deleted from this thread???

Yep. They were off topic and non-modeling related.

Aaron

Wow...okay.  But I was actually thinking that deer in the creek up to its antlers would have made a good dio---just didn't give it time to develop...

I'm glad I do not have to make graphics for decals for those on Borodino.  If i remember the conventions properly, the draft markings are half  a unit measured tall.  So, in feet measure, 6" tall.  So, under that "swoop" some of those letters are likely 15-16" "tall" to fall between 6" (or half-meter) WL.

Wow, those screws look odd...???

They are pretty typical of the period. Here's Borodino:

Kudos to Bronco for getting them "handed".

Does anyone have any info on the draft markings? I wonder if they would be Roman, or Chinese?

i think gmm is reasonably priced. will hold off on wem pe for dreadnought and see who else comes out. i have some kits that all i really need is generic railings and ladders. hope to get to BORODINO and MARKGRAF by the end of the week. looks like a simultaneous build along with 30min or so a day on 1/35 MAS boat until it is done.

I don't know about dedicated sets, but their generics are very costly when compared to the competition. There are also only two of them listed at Freetime.

I'm surprised to hear someone refer to GMM as "beastly expensive" - I have that thought more about WEM's stuff, mainly because of the exchange rate. Both are high quality, but I do like GMM's brass more.

I'm sure there will be lots of after market stuff for Dreadnought. I had an interesting chat with a gent at Freetime a couple of days back. Says he's been selling as many Dreds as he can get. More interesting was his views on PE. I'm not sure it's necessary to get dedicated PE for a lot of kits. I had the WEM set for Konig and used very little except for the ladders and railings. (When I got their stuff for Iron Duke it included yards - I would have used them.) So I really only used the cranes and funnel covers - both of which I think I could have scratch built. The fellow I talked with knew his ships and was very kind with his time. I gave him my standard WEM lament. The stuff is very nicely made, but so delicate that it is vulnerable to damage at almost any point. My biggest problem, at least with a large ship, was keeping my thumbs off the railings while rigging it. I did some nasty damage that was hard to repair. Due to an error in planning, I ran out of 2 rail railings and broke out some Verlinden 350 scale that I had bought really cheap during a sale. I don't doubt it lacks WEM's finesse. It's thicker in every dimension. However, that makes it far easier to work with and much harder to damage once it's on. (You can bend the stuff with a pliars if an angle requires it - no easy task with WEM, especaily their ultra fine.) He was a great WEM fan but said that WEM and Eduard made the most delicate PE. For accuracy/ruggedness he likes Gold Medal best - but it's beastly expensive. He did recommend a new company called Alliance which has a number of 350 generic railings and ladders. (WEM must see a market there - they's increased their generic selection.) The guy who designs for Alliance used to make the railings for Verlinden. Anyway, they are very cheap (for PE) and the Freetime rep thinks they're perfectly adequate for mortals and tough in the bargain. I bought some so I'll report in later. Nice that Bronco makes the issue moot.

White ensign has the PE set out for the Dreadnaught!

Free Time has other stuff too, deck, barrels and those G factor props.

Can see the bar will be high here.

Finally more or less done with Konig. Modeling with Eastern European soap does wonders for the ego. Anyway, she's in her guise on the return from a nasty action in the Baltic in October 1917 - where, among other things she ran aground and took serious water. More pics in the ship forum tomorrow. After a plane and a tank I'll get at Oregon.

Ed, so Oregon is your entrant in this GB?  The Konig looks nice!

Arkmodel 1:100 Qing Navy Kits
Posted by Fairseas on Saturday, October 22, 2011 8:03 PM

For those interested in a larger kit, Arkmodel offers a dozen Sino-IJN vessels in 1:100 scale.

Aside from Ting Yuen & Chin Yuen which are in stock, most of the kits shown on their website are not available since they need to redo many resin parts while they focus on their new 1:16 AFV line.   I've been waiting on their Yoshino, an Armstrong Cruiser, since 2009. Confused

Designed for either display or RC, they make an excellent model but before ordering be sure to ask for a firm ship date.  I've seen both models & they are well worth the money.

Well gentlemen, I'm out of this one for a little while. The "Chen" is done, and the "Chih" is sidelined for a while (I need to do a plane or two...maybe more!). Anyway, here she be.........

 p38jl:

aah... success.. found my Olympia.. its a Lindburg.. ! does anyone know if the Revell kit is the same one ?  the one I have is the Lindburg Classic Replica Series.. 1/240 scale. I might order some PE for it..

The Lindberg kit is the old Pyro kit, which is also the Life Like kit, and also was sold entirely stupidly as the USS Maine.

It's not a very good kit, but well worth building as in this category we are all grateful for most anything. The Revell kit is a different kit, a better kit but also very expensive at $ 100 in it's current form.

Resin Olympia abounds of course, but resin is not allowed in this GB as a basic value.

Bondo are you talking about original release of the Olympia? I think they still sell the current release at the USS Olympia gift shop? And you can sometimes find them at yard sales I found my 2nd Olympia kit for $1. Looks like I'll have to pick up another PE set for my other Olympia.

Awwww look - he's hugging a deer! Wink Between work and woods you still..... manage to find more bench time than I can imagine. I really need to look into your "modeling instead of sleeping" method...

Between work and spending time in the woods (note my new avatar!!!!) I've managed to get some work done. My sleep schedule took a major hit, but sleep is a waste of time anyway!!! Got the masts on and rigging done (stetched sprue).......very tedious!

Them tiny stepladders were a real M.F'er!!!

Wow, looks great---looks like you have her in the "battle-readiness" state, with all of the lifeboats and torpedo boats removed to reduce splintering from shells...where's those cool Chinese flags???
