my wife is fine with my hobby. and i am grateful for that.  she is a scrapbooker so she has a hobby too. i have the basement and my study for my building. she works and i work from home when i have work so i do most of the errand running food shopping and cooking and build during the day while she is gone.

she handed me some wood scraps the other day saying "since your a model builder is this part of a model?" it wasn't but it was a nice gesture.

she would not want a big german rr gun displayed in the living room or my armor but a nice cased rigged ship model would meet with her approval.

Honestly Gents, my beautiful lady has no problem with my hobby and the time I spend on it, which is quite a lot. I had been divorced for quite a while, so given all that free time, I spent it wisely. When I did date I carefully judged their reaction to my hobby. The ones that did NOT approve or at least tolerate did not last long, since I was NOT going to give it up. So now I have a lady that fits me in all ways including my hobby. It does help that I can fix most anything around the house too, LOL.

I am one of the lucky ones, my dear lady not only tolerates my 'toys' but for last xmas she bought me a mini lathe using part of her redundancy payout from her previous job, she puts up with my mess and my disappearing acts, my waffling on about my ships and when I read out some of the funny comments from these threads as I have just done with this one. She has the patience of a saint and I love her to bits as she must do with me. Life is good!

I do know this answer is three months late, but here goes.Somewhere else in this site ,Sometime in the past the same question was asked. My answer then was as follows.

I have been married twice and outlived both.(the only difference from when I answered before) and BOTH were supportive of my hobby turned cottage business.

I have been fortunate that the "BIG GUY "saw fit to link me up with TWO sensitive, sensual, and very crafty women.Number one loved wood ship modeling as much as sewing.

Number two liked knitting and crochetting as much as helping me on client projects(she always was saying,"how,d you do that?"). So with that said, show an interest in your wifes hobbies(if she has any) even if it,s cooking for instance. The rewards far outweigh the negatives.  TANKER-builder

My wife supports my hobby and encourages me to enter contests. I have cut down on purchases to keep the stash down but she has never objected to any model purchase. We give each other our space and it has worked for the past 27 years.

Fr. Pavlvs, Thank you for this post. Modellers are two-timing guys married twice. To their understanding wives and to our hobby.

I have been modelling since I was a kid so I think my wife has accepted this together with my proposal for marriage. As others said, it keeps me home when I should be somewhere else. Our only point of not -so-serious conflict is where I should be keeping all my finished models which is growing by the day!

I'm not married (the Catholic Church frowns on that for her priests) but I had the delight to counsel a married couple where the husband complained that she doesn't spend enough time with him because SHE is spending too much of her time building models.  I thought I was in the Twilight Zone so I suggested he join her at the bench and see if that gives them more time together and now he is hooked on model building, albeit making wood ship models.  Marital bliss restored.  My work was done and I went back to my bench.  Invite your wife to join you and use a kit from your stash to teach her the hobby.  She might just surprise you.  My pastor used to object to my model building until he learned that the Bishop was also an avid model builder and he never complained again.( :-D)

Mine fully-supports my hobby.  She's rather involved in scrap-booking, and I think she supports my hobby so I have nothing to say about hers.  Not sure.  Both are, in their own ways, creative outlets for us, so we both support that.  She's brought home the occasional kit for me when she was at HL, and was perusing their sale counter, and I've built a couple of kits just for her (one, a highly-modified due to the poor quality of the kit, Apache Helicopter, and the other the visible heart).  There's a Visible V-8 kit in my stash that's waiting for her to build.  She figures it would be a good way to learn how a v-8 engine works.  I agree.

Gentleman,

I believe one must confront reality... with a full broadside blast of the truth!

This "hobby" as you call it, is clearly a distraction to all of us.

A distraction from "what"... I don't know. That depends on the state of affairs on your ship .

My dear wife had to accept being with a man, who, for the most part, was always away at sea for months at a time.

I suspect she thought I was running away.

Running away from her... or my responsibilities at home.

In truth, she was right!

But only partly. We are all subject to the requirements of the service. And this is a service that I love  dearly.

But I also love her dearly, as well. And she deserves my attention.

For she has given me great leeway to sail my ship whenever it pleases me.

And I do so.

But I am careful with my voyages. I am not at sea every night. I have to keep in mind, that she leads a lonely life when I am away at sea in the basement.

But there are other voyages we must all take. And we must take them together...with our first mate.

Otherwise... this fine ship...  is thrown on her beam ends and is succumbed entirely... by a huge wave of despair...and will sink with all hands.

So.... my advice to all is this: Choose your battles wisely.

For it is sad to be lonely at sea.

But it's even worse to be lonely at home.

For a captain.

Or his wife ashore.

Fare thee well and God bless America.

Sincerely,

Captain Isaac Hull

My Mrs supports it fully, she even brings home the odd kit, my problem lies with a lack of a proper bench. I have a small A4 sized mini table with enough room for a cutting mat, the shed is stuffed and I mean stuffed to the rafters with the kids toys. She's promised me I can have the shed in two weeks, but then I just know that because I'm not in the same room watching the Karditians she'll feel ignored. Did a nice 1/24 Spit for her dads birthday though. If only she knew that the "£50" I spent on eBay was actually closer to £150, I'm somewhat conservative about prices ;-)

This is funny stuff! My Significant Other doesn't have a big problem with my hobbying....I keep a limit on my *bench-time*, too...which is a good thing, because if left to my own devices, I might find myself spending WAY too much time building!  She keeps us busied with plenty of activities and various outings (especially now that it's Summer!)...but I get home from work before she does, so I usually walk in the door, break out my current kit, and get 1-2 hours each day during the week, and then I usually give myself a couple hours here and there during the weekends....

The thing she does get tired of...is hearing about this rigging, or that mast top, or how I'm wondering whether I should make some modifications....all the stuff that's rolling around in my head sometimes dominates the dinner-table conversation...She's supportive, but she's not at thrilled as I am about the painted hinges on my bulkhead entry!

I can't fill up the house with finished models, so I have one shelf in my office with 3 display cases for my model cars (which I rotate out), and one display case for a ship....which is where the Black Swan will go once finished.

My wife of 38 years hates it but has accepted it. But, she does rejoice in reminding me that I don't have enough years left to build everything in my collection, let alone new ones. But, I continue to buy new ones anyway.

Okay...I have to fess up.

SWMBO does give me some ribbing about my 'toys', but in reality she has no problem with my hobbies or the time I spend on them. I actually asked her the other night after mentioning this thread and she thinks I have really lost it, but as long as I enjoy what I do, she will support me.

She really doesn't mind in the least.

I am one lucky man, and I know it. She must never know that I realise this. Let's keep this one a secret.

Mine loves it!

It took a few years of me ignoring her complaints, for her to realize that she will not win.

I figured out a while back, that if I start to wrestle with the dogs, and make all kinds of noise, or just being a general pain in the A...I get "banished" (so she thinks) to my basement....she thinks she won, as I laugh all the way to the bench!

For my wife (25 years in September), it's a love-hate situation. The spending money of the kits and supplies bothers her as well as the size of my stash and where to put the finished products. Being home is a benefit. I have dug into my stash and donated nearly 20 kits to the troops abroad, which I rather do than sell on evilBay. My actual additions to my stash is in the negative figures at this time.

You poor chaps...my bride is a "crafty" gal, if it is knitted, weaved, sewed, loomed, beaded or painted, she's got a handle on it! If I could hook up a generator to her spinning wheel, I could generate my own electricity and get off the grid. She also "puts up" tomato sauce, applesauce, tomatos, beans and cranberry sauce(made with brandy) in the fall. We have enough mason jars to use as beer glasses in a bar. Thankfully she was raised by an aunt back in the day when woman enjoyed a practical "hobby" that wasn't looked upon as "woman's work", just the enjoyment of making something with your own hands.

She seldom purchases any model kits for my enjoyment as she'll tell you I won't build 'em all in my lifetime. But she does spring for super glue, a bottle of Zip Kicker and an occasional xacto blade or saw(she uses them too in her projects).

I have model building friends who married woman that have no hobbies or outside interest other than giving them jazz about their purchasing another plastic kit. My advice to unmarried modelers, get a gal that has a hobby or a genuine interest in some craft or pastime. If she can cook that's a bonus.

Oh yeah, my wife built the cinderblock retaining wall for my out door garden railroad, she does a good job with quickcrete!!

I tend to build in the evenings when she's watching TV. Very little on TV I care to watch, soooo I guess it keeps me in the same room. Which must be a good thing, right?  Right?!?!?

My C-in-C basically tolerates my hobby, so long as I don't spend too much time closeted in my hobby room and in her view, igoring her.  I try to limit my bench time to about an hour each evening just before bed.  That way I can sit on the couch and watch whatever mind numbing drivel with wife is enjoying on TV until she gets ready to go to bed, then I slink off to the hobby room and get some bench time in.  Fortunately for me, she takes relatively frequent trips to visit different relatives she has in a couple of adjoining states and these trips, sometimes seveal days in length, give me an opportunity to get some real building done.  I find that if I want to avoid marital conflict I need to keep my finger on the pulse of the C-in-C to ascertain if she is feeling ignored.  If she is, then bench time gets sacrificed to maintain marital harmony.  At least she is supportive enough to make my modeling hobby a subject for gifting for  Christmas, birthdays, etc..

Every time I make her mad, which happens often for no apparent reason, she utters the words "Why don't you just go play with your model thingies and calm yourself down."  So... I guess she supports my hobby.

She's been known to show up with a kit or two under her arm for me after a day of bargain shopping. Granted they are some of the ugliest stupidest kits but who am I to complain about plastic.
