Sailing Ships

In fact, I do.  I am once again building the Heller Le Soleil Royal, making  the many revisions we arrived at in "The Ultimate Building Guide" thread.  I have raised her waterline to the lower wale as found in"Les Vasseaux du Louis XIV", I have opened her quarter galleries, closed the hole in the knee of the head, and have painted her ala Berain, with light blue sides with gold wales.  I have added planked decks and have added a galley funnel and chicken coop to the deck furniture. Unfortunately, I have never been able to successfully post photos to the FSM site.

I am also building the Constructo HMS Pandora, which is a most mediocre kit.  The forecastle bulwarks are far too high and the bow is much too sharp, so I am revising the basic build as I go. The materials are horrible. The false deck is made out of plywood that delaminates, so I have to use them as templates for basswood replacements. It is a challenge, but it is fun.

Great job!  I have always liked the Victory more in her early appearance.

The entry ports are another debate in itself, but again I chose to include them in my build.

Starting the chainplates using 28g brass wire, still need to fine tune the timberheads at this point

Fabricated the gangboards using misc styrene.

The 6 pounders were created by turning down the kit supplied 12 pounders, and shortening them approx 3.7mm, as was the carrage.

It is an interesting debate!  Some evidence also suggests that the entry ports should or should not be there as well. Michael, I would love to see photos of what you are doing.

The Clarkson Stanfield and JMW Turner paintings both show raised bulwarks on foc'sle at Trafalgar (both paintings influenced by veterans of the battle).  I think all other references suggest the bulwarks would've been low prior to the Great Repair (done just prior to the battle).

The plans and the contemporary model of Victory, as launched, show the  low Foc'sle with exposed timberheads, as does the painting of her in 1793 by Monamy Swaine.

Michael's interpretation is I believe correct.

Have to love the controversy though...I don't recall seeing any of models on the National Maritime Museums website dipicting her in 1765 with raised bulwarks, now she may have had them at a later date just prior to the last major refit, I've seen some Illustrations of her carrying 9 windows accross the stern Instead of the 8 commonly seen in pictures etc at that date, and thats the route I chose, as I feel It doesn't really take away the essence of the 1765 configuration.

The plans I purchased from the NMM some 5 years ago are #ZAZ0120 ...Lines, and Decorations for $105.00.

There seems to be some controversy surrounding HMS Victory's forecastle bulwarks.  They are currently the low, knee-high form depicted in most models, including the Heller version.  Some paintings, I believe by Corne, depict her at Trafalgar with the raised bulwarks.  Some models show her in her youth with the stern galleries and raised bulwarks while others show the lower ones.  The excellent model by Caldercraft/JoTiKa depict her as at Trafalgar with raised bulwarks.  Also, Bondoman is converting the Heller kit to show raised ones.

What plans are you working from? I would love to get a copy.

The Heller 1:100 kit. I must admitt you had me worried there for a second, so I opened up the 1:48 scale plans I have to verify whether, or not I may have overlooked that detail, and they spec out accordingly...Whew!!!

I love your backdating the Victory to an early date. Which kit is it? And, are you planning on raising the forecastle bulwarks?

No sailing ships finished but I do have a few incomplete.

My 1/96 Constitution was started in 1979, then kids & life caused me to put it on a shelf & forget it for quite a while. I recently bought  another Kit & a parts lot to rework it eventually.

Wow! Bondoman, I love your checkered deck!  I sincerely hope that we can attract other builders as well; I would love to show that sailing ship modellers are alive, well, and thriving!
