Thank you, sir.

BTW, I encountered a mistake in the instructions regarding sail placement, and I like to indicate corrections when I find them, for future builders who may follow this WIP:

On page 3, *Yardarm Assembly* step, sails C and E are reversed, and actually go to the respectively opposite yard. I'm sure it would become obvious to anyone building it, since one sail is substantially wider than the other, but I wanted to point it out.  :)

Also, as an aside, there are a few instances in which instruction steps are repeated on successive pages, which may add to some confusion.  Other than those minor issues, they are helpful...though the pics could be better...many of the illustrations are washed-out and the lines for the rigging are difficult to see.

Once I tie blocks to the yards and masts, I'll be able to start some mast assembly/rigging...it still surprises me to go from being in the midst of hull/deck assembly and then suddenly find that I'm wandering into rigging line territory...This is when I start thinking ahead to my next kit...and re-learning slipknots and clove hitches!

Well, now that I've reached the point of attaching the yards and stepping the masts, I might hold off...we're planning to move very soon, and It'd be easier to transport the partial build before the masts and yards are in place....

Meanwhile, I guess I can start working on the deadeyes....ummmm, but the ship models I've built so far have had molded deadeye/lanyard assemblies, so I don't really know what to do!  Tried a quick search here for *tying deadeyes*, but I didn't get much info right off the bat....

Or, I can start working on making my replacement rope ladder....I got some Styrene strip that matches the size of the footboards of the included molded ladder...suppose I can cut a bunch of them to length, pin vise some holes in the ends, and run line though it....

I'm not sure if this will be of any help but I've saved it in my favorites just to have a reference if and when I ever attempt to do them myself instead of using the supplied, not-so-great-looking units in some of the Revell kits.

Sweet, Thanks Mike!

Here's a pic of the rungs for my rope ladder...made them from 1.5mm styrene, cut to 1cm lengths, then pin-vised at each end, and rounded off with a sanding stick.....next I'll paint them, add some weathering, and run lines through the holes, hopefully with ladder-like results (we'll see!)

Personally, I find the setting  up of deadeyes just about the most challenging part of rigging a ship model.  The job is made worse by the fact that it has to be done so early in the rigging process.

I don't know of a really good way to do it.  People have come up with various jigs and fixtures that attempt to keep the deadeyes in straight rows while the lanyards are being rigged.  Such things help.  But if the tension on the lanyards isn't consistent from shroud to shroud, the deadeyes will get whopperjawed as soon as the jig is removed.

Some people try setting up the lanyards before the shrouds are secured at their upper ends.  That method may be helpful for some, but I find that it makes it difficult to set up the shrouds with uniform tension.

The way I usually do it is as follows (and I don't claim this method is particularly good).

1.  Cut a piece of the heavy line that's going to be the shroud to something more than its final length - including the parts that will be seized around the deadeyes.  (I'm assuming we're dealing with a "normal" shroud that starts at a deadeye, goes around the masthead, and comes down to another deadeye on the same side of the ship.)  Seize one end of it around a deadeye.

2.  Rig the lanyard.  Tie a big knot in the end of it.  (The traditional full-size one is the Matthew Walker knot, but on a model several reef knots tied on top of each other will work better.)  Start rigging the lanyard by passing the lanyard outward through the upper lefthand hole (as viewed from inboard) in the upper deadeye.  (Caveat:  if the shroud is cable-laid - i.e., lefthand twist - the lanyard starts through the upper righthand hole.)  Then it goes inboard through the upper righthand hole (as viewed from outboard) of the first lower deadeye.  Then to the center hole in the upper deadeye, and so on.  By the time you get the lanyard through the last hole, you'll find that the whole spindly-looking arrangement is actually pretty sturdy.  It will be surprisingly difficult to pull the end of the lanyard through the deadeyes.  Those old riggers knew what they were doing.

On ships of most periods, the distance from the upper deadeye to the lower should be about three times the deadeye diameter.  Good news for modelers of Columbus-period ships, though:  I've seen quite a few contemporary pictures (and competent modern paintings) that show pretty sloppy-looking deadeyes, with some pairs quite a bit farther apart than others.

Secure the bitter end of the lanyard.  There are various ways to do this.  Some sources say the end of the lanyard should be seized back on itself.  Others say the end should be "expended in half hitches" around the lower end of the shroud, just above the upper deadeye.  On a model, this is unlikely to make much difference.

3.  Pass the end of the shroud (or, more properly, shroud pair) up through the lubber's hole in the top (if any), around the masthead, down through the lubber's hole again, and down toward the second deadeye that's waiting in the channel.  Here's where the job starts to get tricky.  Try to judge where on the length of the second shroud the deadeye belongs, and seize it there.  You want the upper deadeyes to be in line with each other, and the two shrouds to be reasonably taut.  When you're satisfied that you have the deadeye in the right place on the shroud, seize it in place and find out whether it's in line with the adjacent deadeye.

4.  Rig the second lanyard.  If you've done everything right, the deadeyes will be in line and the two shrouds will be just about equal in tautness.

5.  Seized the two shrouds together just below the masthead.  (This is how I do it myself; I'm sure others will seize the shrouds earlier in the proceedings.)  Now the shrouds should be quite taut.  They may, in fact, make the mast lean over a little.  That's ok; the shrouds and lanyards on the other side of the ship will pull it back.  When you've set up all the shrouds, the mast may lean slightly backwards.  That's ok too; you can pull it into line with the stay.

By the time all the lower standing rigging is in place, you should be rewarded by a neat, symmetrical set of deadeyes and shrouds that twang slightly when you tweak them.

Here, as elsewhere in the rigging process, there's just no substitute for practice.  I find that, since I build slowly, and years often pass between rigging jobs, my fingers have to relearn the process every time I do it.  (Yes, fingers learn - and forget.  Believe me.)  But nothing makes a model look better than a nice set of shrouds deadeyes, lanyards, and ratlines,

Hope all that helps a little.  Good luck.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Thanks, JTilley...

I can tell that my best bet (as with most endeavors) is to dive in and give it a whirl....I suppose I'll set up a *practice rig* and try to get used to techniques, and see if I can keep things adjusted evenly...should be interesting....

Meranwhile, I got the rope ladder built, it was kind of a pain, but worth it, I think...once I get some weathering on the rung-boards, I'll post a pic.

It's safe to say that's a real improvement! Great work!

Did you make up a jig?

Thanks, G!

Not really a jig....I just took some Evergreen 1.5mm strip and cut it to 1cm lengths with an xacto knife, pin vised them at each end, painted them (which was a tedious job!), strung them onto some line, and taped it down, sliding them to .5 cm apart, added a couple dabs of plastic cement to the undersides of the holes/lines, and then hit them with some oil paint for texture.  Voila!

All settled in at the new place....finally able to re-visit some hobbying!

Got the masts and yards attached, got the rope ladder installed (looks sweet!), and I tied up the mainmast deadeye lanyards....it was my first time, but once I got it figured out, they went smoothly!

Here's how I did it:

Clamped each deadeye into the hleping hands holder, at the presrcibed distance apart (3x the diameter, which was approx 1.5cm), tied a knot in the end of one lanyard end, threaded it through the holes, then I flipped it on it's side and tied another knot in the free end, a little tweezer and tug action!  Drop of CA on each end (after a re-check of the distance under tension)...and voila!  I know typically, lanyards are rigged to the deadeyes while the shrouds are in place, but for this application I felt this was easier.

Then I tied one deadeye block to the *chainplate* leads (rigging line that was placed in hull holes earlier during construction)....now I'm moving on to stays and other standing rigging.  Once that's done, I'll approach the mainmast shrouds...thinking I'll seize a shroud around a deadeye, run it up and around the masttop, and back down to the next deadeye on the same side, then alternate with the other side, etc....the instructions describe another method (up one side, down the other) which I don't like for this model.  Turns out, the Imai instructions leave a lot to be desired, especially in terms of illustrations, not to mention missing steps, and repeated steps!  :)

Anyway, it's going pretty good....I'll post a few pics soon.

Meanwhile, now that I'm on to rigging, I'm starting to look ahead to my next kit...I have several more Imai kits in the stash by now, thinking I'll move on to the Pirate Ship (Spanish Galleon) next....plus I recently got their Mayflower kit, and the Chebec, and three tiny Imai kits, the Viking Ship, Roman Warship, and Greek Warship....when the time comes, I think I may do all three of those at the same time, since they're small.  Also, I'm on the lookout for an Imai Golden Hind.

Jeez, somebody stop me from rambling!

On to rig some stays!

Happy modeling!

LOL

My girlfriend says the same thing!

It's true, I spend a lot of time thinking (and learning) about ship models....but I don't lock myself up in the shop and build all day long...I try to implement balance into my life!  :)

And I like to think of my model stash as a *closet of dreams*....and since pretty much all the kits I like are out of production, I have to buy them when I find them, right?  um, right?

But speaking of side projects, I just happen to have a Ghostbusters Ecto-1 car kit that I might break out pretty soon!

Got a few pics of some progress.:

Here's my first attempt at rigging a lanyard through a deadeye (these *practice* deadeyes are wooden, but the ones I rigged on the model are styrene) The Masts and Yards are on! Yep, cloth sails, furled (I'm doing a lot of new stuff with this one!) Front view of hull Closeup of mizzen mast and lateen and blocks Rope ladder is installed!! Anchors are installed... And the boat:

Still working away on the rigging...got the mainmast shrouds done today, things are moving along smoothly!

Something I've never bothered to do before is to set the flags and bonners on a ship model....but this time I want to...anyone have some tips/advice for that stuff?

Got a few pics to share...

Now that I've gotten the *deadeyes* and shrouds mostly done, I kinda wish I'd just used wooden deadeyes with grooves around them...the molded rings on the plastic kit parts are a drag...and though the deadeyes aren't perfectly spaced, I feel like I learned alot while doing them, and I'll feel more comfortable on my next attempt!  Also during this build I tried running the shrouds in pairs, up and around the masts, and then seized them above the tops to get good spacing at the high end...made a big difference!

Anyway, here are some pictures:

Got her finished this morning....I put the flags on, but I didn't like the way they looked...didn't seem to fit well with the overall aspect of the build, so I took them back off...to date, I haven't been compelled to put flags on any ship I've built yet...

Anyway, here's some pics of the finished build--it was a lot of fun!  Of course, I'm already getting started on the Imai Pirate Ship kit!  lol

Thanks everyone for all your advice, comments, and support! Happy Modeling! Dave

Thanks, Rob!  I love what you're doing with that Cutty Sark, man!  Amazing!  I have one in the stash, but it's not getting opened up until I'm ready...which is going to be awhile!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Pirate Ship, too (love the Imai stuff!)....but I haven't decided yet if I'm going to post a WIP...I may just build it on the down-low and maybe post some pics later...we'll see.  I really do appreciate comments and advice from the experienced members...

Hi again David, I'm only 3 years late with this build & I do thank you for the answers you have given me. Your work just gets better each time & right now you are the best. Yours stains look super. I used stain 30 years ago at least & it was mostly  on detailing planes & other models. I still have the old stain & it is still good.

I am finishinjg the Black Swan this week & want to go on the Santa Maria.Yours is really beautiful & your stain looks perfect. So does your rigging & all. David I want to put sails on the Santa Maria& might have to settle for vacuform, but where can I get them? Do you have any ideas ? Yours look great furled, but I want to show the big red cross.

I want to put on some pictures of my various models, ships, planes, cars & train layouts, & riverboats, but don't know where to do it. Is there a central photo site ?

This was my train layout 30 years ago, & the second one was my last.

I remember working on this ship back in the early 1990s and really miss the time that I spent here. The Mayor Dana Rinehart would visit the site quite often, sometimes daily. I belive Tara Barney was the coordinator for the site. Image may contain: one or more people, people standing, hat, shoes, outdoor and closeup
