Hi, putting together the early version of this sub and I'm planning to basically recreate the box art for the final presentation.

Looking forward to this. Got the same kit in the stash. How long did it take to drill out the vents.
I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
On the bench: Airfix 1/72nd Harrier GR.3/Fujimi 1/72nd Ju 87D-3
The deck is almost a perfect fit, snaps together nicely. I'll be painting the hull before I bury it in foam.

Thanks Bish, it took a while. I drilled three holes in each vent and filed them out. They look a bit rough in the shots but I've sanded them some more.
Thanks Lloyd, i have seen a few build reviews and they all say that jopb tok a while. Your method seems to be fairly common as well. Look forward to seeing some more. As soon as i get some decent display space, i hope to start on mine. So i'll be keeping a close eye on this build.
Ok. I forgot to mention, I used a dremel to thin the plastic, creating these channels on the inside of the hull, you can just see. I can't remember where I got the idea from, saw it in a build thread somewhere.
Ye, i recall that as well. I have a couple of build threads saved in my favorites, but can't recall which that was in. Sounds like a sound idea.
Love it. Am building my way up to this big guy. I have other subs to build at smaller scale. BUt I'm anxious to get to it! Keep posting pix please.
I came up with this colour sample for the hull, but I really just wanted to hit it with a spray can. I'll have to see if anything close to this is available.
Does anyone know if the tamiya gunship gray2 spraycan is the same as the anthracite? I know the tamiya gunship gray2 is meant for modern US aircraft, I just want the correct colour on the hull if possible.
Looking forward to seeing how those colors work out for you. I have one boat nearly ready for painting, just sitting on top my desk for now and 3 more in the box.
On the bench: So many hanger queens.
Thanks, I'm going to try out the life clour paints which are on order- they have the exact colours for german subs. And some AK weathering enamels like the "Interactive Grey Wash for Kriegsmarine Ships ". It's not essential but I really like the finish the AK enamel washes produce.
What are these "life clour paints" you speak of?
I know from someone who has built many of these u-boat kits that Krylon Primer Grey is a match for the paint below the waterline.
I am about to start a u-boat myself. Need to get some Ghost grey for the upper hull.

A VIIc and a GATO for size --- both are 72 scale. Sadly, these are not mine. I can only hope mine turn out half as well.
It's a shame to water line this model looking at that example, but I like doing the scenery too.
I haven't airbrushed Life Color paints before, I'll see how it goes.

And I have an arsenal of AK stuff to fire at the sub.

I look forwards to seeing your progress, this is the last of the things I "really" want to add to my stash ((not to be confused with a couple of things I would like to add to my stash, or all the things I really should add to my stash ) But this kit in particular is the "top" of the list. I Figured it would make a good bookend to the Flower class Corvette kit I finally managed to add.
Good luck with it mate!
A nice line up of stuff you have there. I didn't realise AK did naval weathering products, i think i might have to get some of those. When i get round to doing mine, i want to do it justice, so looking to pick up as many tips as possable.
One of the ten models that I have left in my stash (I promised myself no new models until I complete the ones I have) is the 1/72 Gato. I just can't figure out where I can put the monster.
I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
subfixer One of the ten models that I have left in my stash (I promised myself no new models until I complete the ones I have) is the 1/72 Gato. I just can't figure out where I can put the monster.
Monster is right. I got my VIIc about 18 months ago. I happened to have it next to me while on the forum and someone had posted a pic of the VIIc next to a GATO, both built. If i hadn't had the kit close to hand, i wouldn't have realised just how big it is and how big the GATO is. I'm not much into Allied naval builds, but that would be worth it just for how impressive it is.
I have the Gato too and a large collection of after-market details. Not to mention the 1/72 metal crew figures from Zinnfiguren. I am planning to waterline that monster as well.
Some updates on the U-boat. I finished most of the deck PE details, and primed it. Next time I would glue the deck down and then do the photo- etch, because I kept knocking small PE details off as I sanded the joins.

Pre-shading also done. Not pretty, but should look ok once I spray the hull and do the paint chipping. The AK chipping colour is good, just needed a lot of coats to get a solid rust colour, so I splattered on my own. Will need some toning down.
Looking good! I finally got my hands on this kit as well, I expect it to be delivered next week, looking forward to increasing the stash by one more :)
looking good so far I also didn't realize how big a Gato class was compared to this

Looking nice. I will be interested to see how those AK naval weathering products work.
Your weathering and pre-shading are perfect ! After paint and a wash or two it will be stunning !
Standing by for more pictures.
Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"
Some updates. The paint chipping didn't work, so I'm just doing the rust streaking and salt streaks after I have sealed the paint with future. And I added some extra shading with smoke colour.
