Dag nab it! This is terrible news. The man just retired not long ago. I see this happen too much.

Couldn't have said it one word better. Never had the pleasure of actually meeting the gentleman, but his 'voice' was always welcome, well-informed, and touched with civilty and good humor. A great loss to all of us.

His passing is going to be taken hard here.  Never a day went by where I was able to get into a good, long discussion with the Professor over something nautical releated.  I was afraid this was coming with his absences getting more and more frequent over the year.

Yes, it is a tragedy. Like so many great people who are wholeheartedly dedicated to their job... Retirement almost literally breaks their heart. I'm very sad, reading professor Tilley's posts was always a delight, I'm going to miss him very much.

We were fortunate to have John visit us at BlueJacket last year.  He was a great supporter of the industry and a great resource, particularly on Coast Guard issues.

So sorry to hear that. He was a font of knowledge and I learned a lot from his posts.  I always looked forward to reading whatever he posted.  It's such a shame, he was one of the good guys.

OH my..what a great loss to the modeling community and one personally.  John was an inspiration to so many and to myself personally.  His encouraging, instructional and motivational posts will be greatly missed.

I can't think of a more earnest, generous, nautically knowledgeable person in any modeling forum who gave wise counsel to all who queried regarding ships and ship models.

In the last week or two I've been wondering where his voice went. I am sure that there are many who are grateful for his advise and who have benefitted greatly from his sage words. I'm sure one of them.
