I always took the time to read Mr. Tilly's posts, knowing I would learn from them. A true Statesman. Not many left out there. My sympathy to his family and friends.

Cheers,

Bob

I had the pleasure to meet professor tilley several times as a young man living in Virginia going to the Mariners Museum on school trips or with my family. A very knowledgeable man and very proud of the huge collection of ship models throughout the museum.

1943Mike

I can't think of a more earnest, generous, nautically knowledgeable person in any modeling forum who gave wise counsel to all who queried regarding ships and ship models.

'Tis the Season...  To Remember.

And Ditto to the comment above.

I am, forever, grateful for his advise and words of wisdom.

Merry Christmas to all FSM.

This forum has lost more than it can bear. With the recent Photobucket disaster we lost so much of his information it will never all be retrieved. Now with Prof. Tillys passing  the wisdom we have lost will be a huge void that we probably  will never recover from.

To his family:  I am sorry for your loss , and apperetiate you allowing him the time to guide us mortals in our quest to build a better ship.  Though I never met him, the information he passed along to us made me feel like a part of something bigger.

God speed sir. And may the weather gauge be with you.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

I visit these forums because people here share their passion for this hobby, and treat each other with dignity and respect. Professor Tilley epitomized why visiting here has been such a pleasure. May we continue his legacy...

With great sadness, we bid you farewell!!!

Is there any person on the Forum who replace John Tilley with his knowledge and wisdom that we came to respect ? Frankly, it is not possible, as Proferssor Tilley was one of a kind that is not able to replace. Rest in peace, Professor Tilley.

What Spotted Dog said.

I can't think of a more earnest, generous, nautically knowledgeable person in any modeling forum who gave wise counsel to all who queried regarding ships and ship models.

In the last week or two I've been wondering where his voice went. I am sure that there are many who are grateful for his advise and who have benefitted greatly from his sage words. I'm sure one of them.

May the wind be at your stern Professor.

I loved reading his long insightful interesting posts.

John Tilley was a legend here for years, maybe the biggest one on here ever.

I hope the magazine does something.

A true loss for us here. His contributions here to anything where he could offer his considerable knowledge are irreplaceable. We all have our time to go, but his came too soon.

Spotted Dog

Prof. Tilley was the rare combination of vast knowledge, passion for his subject and always a gentlemen. A rare combination now days. He will be missed.

Couldn't have said it one word better. Never had the pleasure of actually meeting the gentleman, but his 'voice' was always welcome, well-informed, and touched with civilty and good humor. A great loss to all of us.

RIP Prof. Tilley.

Many of us share these same thoughts.

This hits hard.  I will miss Prof Tilley very much.  He represented that which many of us modelers would like to be.
