Thank you Surface_Line. I put you down over in the Group Build section.

Thanks Bill. I'll do that.

Just how good are these ICM and Combrig kits?  I have noticed that some of hte kits mentioned are resin, shat about these?  So far I have builr only a couple resin iron clads, the Austrailian monitor Cereberus, and the the Reuben James which were not bad kits, although the James was kind of a strange looking little ship that looked like a last minute conversion from some other class of ship.

When building the ICM SMS Kronig I had a heck of a time getting the secondary deck to align with the main deck properly and sit correctly. Also those louvers for ventalation on the funnels were a real pain to install.  I would like to believe it was my fault but I don't know for sure.  Otherwise I enjoy the build and hope the Kronprinz is more enjoyable.

I just now seen this thread on the group build and I like the rules and the time frame.  I would like to enter ICM Kronprinz 1/350 scale.  Along with RB model metal barrel set, White Ensign PE for the Kronig class of ships and Gold Medal Models PE for Kronig class of ships.  The W.E. PE is pretty lacking on details but the G.M.M PE offering is real intense, lots of detail.

I should be able to start the build in September as soon as I clear the dry dock of another build.

OK.  I will be building the Skywave "Narvik destroyer" as the ex-Z-31 French contre-torpelleur Marceau (the French navy doesn't use any kind of prefix like USS or FN or such.  It's just Marceau.)

Thanks,
Rick

Surface_Line,

It would be great to have you aboard. Just let me know what you want to do and I'll put it down.

This fits with my need to do something interesting with a pile of (fairly nasty) old Type 36A(MoB) class German destroyers.  These are sisters of Z31, who was ceded to France and renamed Marceau during her time in the French Navy in the 1950s.  Don't know yet which one I will use as a starting point.
And then there is the ancient German torpedo boat from Kobo Hiryu in the dawn of resin kits.  France used several of those post-war, too.  Will need to figure out which of those is appropriate.

That would be a neet mod GH. One could purchase some Bismarck/Tirpitz turrets from Model Monkey

Don't know how accurate it is on color schemes of Scharnhorst and her sister, but I got one of squadrons books on the pair for my eventual 1/350 build.

As an aside, the 11" barbetts were designed so they could eventually upgrade to the 15" twin mounts (when available) from the 11" triples.  Gneisie had her triples removed in preparation for the swap but never completed when she was in for repairs/refit . Would be interesting to have seen that combination, about the same punch, and a little faster.

Would be an interesting "what if" to plant Bismarck turrets on a Scharnhorst.

Lifecolor makes set I believe.

Be careful about the Sharny camo. It never did have splinter or light grey turret tops like are in some references. The spinter was a DD moured next to her and the light grey was from a picture that looks very much like she had light grey tops. There is some debate about that but most agree that they weren't. There's no record anyway.

If I had my druthers, I'd like to see the Tirpitz. I've never seen that camo scheme, just the spinter.

Doing some research I read she was in Faettenfjord at that time and the crew also apperently camouflaged her with trees. Huh?

I would like the see the Flyhawk Sharny though. Shall I add the Tirpitz as well?

yep add the Tirpitz! Going to mull over this and watch for opinions. we've  got new carpet being installed early next week so I've got furniture to move and some final bits to add onto the Enterprise before I start another one.

...and i am gonna go look for that bit about the trees. I picked up German Camoflauge of ww2 on amazon last night. Of all things it was free with my kindle unlimited subscription. Never seen a reference book like this free on amazon! It's got the Schornhorst patterns in it to.

Anyone have a good reference for colors beyond the Vallejo set? It seems to be missing browns i think. Any thoughts on that?

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

That pic of it in dress greens is definitely different.  Would make a nice display and contest entry with the pic to back it up.

Ohhh I may have to change up my build order here - Ijust saw a rare camo pattern for the Tirpitz and it's calling me in to the fjord, i mean fold Smile Burger

My son has this railroad mountain that he cut in half for a Dungeons & Dragons game that will make a perfect mountainside in a Norwegian fjord. Here's a weak mock-up!

Ive got the 1/700 Scharnhorst from Flyhawk up next in theory. Dying to build that kit BUT...What do you guys think, any preference as to what you'd like to see?

Alright here we go with my obligatory sprue shots with extra goodies. I still need to photograph the 3D extras I’ve purchased.

I’m going to build the Revell 1/72 Schnellboot with the Flak. I’m tempted to over gun this boat which as far as I know never existed. I’m thinking of moving the Quad Flak gun to the center position and use the single 40mm on the stern. Just saying... I’m also going to decal this puppy with a mixture of Pennington decals.

I’ll post the 3D gear and reference books I’ll be using next.

Enjoy,

Steve

Look at all the AM, you're so bad Steve. Same as me, I can't seem to do anything OOB anymore

GMorrison

You'll want Dunkelgrau 51 for the hull and Hellgrau 50 for the upper works.

I see the AK Interactive does include those two in the Kreigsmarine set they sell. My mistake.

GM is correct, it does include both of those colors:

On the bench:  1/48 Eduard MiG-21MF

I finally got what I hope is the last thing I need for the Draf Spee.  The photo etch set arrived last week.  I have that, gun barrels, hopefully the right paint, and the wood deck.  Now just finish up what little I have left on my other project and I'm off.  Scratch that, never say off about me.  I can begin.

Wait a minute, should the eck be of a particular?  I had planned to leave it just the way it came.  I would think that staining the wood might remove the detail.

I used an Artwox wood deck on my S-100 and i added a very thin oil wash to darken it. Worked a treat. But just test it on some of the spare wood first.
