Photo etched deck for Revell 1/72 VIIc U-boat?
Posted by Chuck Fan on Friday, April 23, 2004 3:50 PM
Is anyone contemplating photo-etched decks with open free-flood holes for Revell's 1/72 Uboat? Opening up the holes on the plastic deck by hand looks challenging.

Also, anyone making pressure hull inserts for the kit? These will be visible if the limber holes are opened up.

Hey Chuck I just posted this link in the other long thread. Yes PE kit is all but done, shoot me an email at jason@modelbrass.com and I'll send everyone an email when it's ready.

Click this link to see what's included and a rough overview of the art. I got the limits today on plate size to fall into the smaller German tariff, so now I just have to get some prototypes burned. Barring any unforeseen eventualities (yeah right) these should be available in a couple weeks.

The Amati kit also comes with a photo etched deck and sides. I have an unbuilt one that I am contemplating putting on my Revell kit. Does anyone know how to copy photoetching? I've heard it can be done with the right chemicals. Ryan

Ryan-
I have the Amati, and I think that there is too much difference betwen the plastic hull of the Revell, and the resin/foam hull of the Amati to do a one off copy, without some serious modifications being needed. Especially true in the area around the conning tower and the middle deck, and the foredeck, which seems to be much more curved in the Amati model than the Revell. I guess it depends on how accurate you wish to be...

I am sorry for not answering emails. The reason is because I've been very busy, and part of that busyness has the Revell PE very close to complete. Here are some teaser pics. I should have pricing in a couple days and be ready to ship in a week, or late next week.

These pics are from the prototype, which was made from a laser print film positive. Long story short, there are some troubles that will disappear when I commit to "real" film and longer exposure times.

Well, as a former photoetcher myself, I can say that I'm impressed. Put me down for a set...

Now, we need to dicuss doing a deck set that will work with my Turm IV tower conversion and schnorkel parts!!

Pictures of VIIC equiped with a snorkle seem to show a completely different deck design from earlier VIIC. The new deck seems to be made from strips of planks, with a space in between, arranged parallel to the length of the sub, nailed to a frame underneath. The conning tower and wintergarten floor was also done in this parallel plank design.

Good news: I'll be able to retail these for $35. (Well, I don't know how good that is, but it's a lot better than I had feared.)

"Bad" news: I'm soaking up some good advice on the hole pattern arrangements that will allow more flexibility in which boat one chooses to model, as well as fixing some miscellaneous faults. (Thanks to Dougie Martindale, UK) Also the UZO will be moved over to be in line with the periscopes, which was not fixed for those prototype pics. I should have finalized the art after this weekend and be able to order film prints on Monday, which puts the kits out to about 5/26-5/28 or so for availability.

Also there will not be separate kits for static and R/C conversion modelers; it will just be one sheet for all. There will be included a paper sheet showing the intent of all the pieces included, which will also have templates you can use in making handrails out of brass wire/rod.

When this is put to bed, next up is the 41/C deck, which I have to make for this and for the Robbe U-47 R/C sub.

That is good news!

Thank you.

Is there any word on how the PE sets will be distributed when available?

Well I have a guy in Germany, but my guy in the US fell through. I will probably direct sell them via the website/paypal until I make a new US friend. I have a guy in the UK, but he is primarily RC, so I don't know how excited he will be about it, but I will find out.

I hope those PE sets for the Revell 1/72 U-BOAT find their way down under.

Well I got the art done. Once I posted pics of the prototypes, I was flooded with corrections and additions via email and there's one guy in particular to whom I owe a great deal, a lot more than a free kit!

Here's the pic, followed by current inclusions as well as what is going to be included on a later upgrade. Kind of an upgraded upgrade for those who really want to cut up that hull...

I sent the vector (CAD) file to photoshop so I could show which things were debossed and which were through-holes. It's a limited medium.

The brass is .010".

Included:
Deck
CT Floor
Flood Patterns for around Planes, Fore and Aft
8 Handwheels for Guns/Sail Hatch
Saddle Tank Top Vents, 10 Large, 4 Small
Periscope Fluting/Rings
Circle and Cross for CT Sides
Same Symbols for CT 'Nose'
Intake Screens for CT, Both Types

You would probably do better to get a little piece of fine brass screen to do the CT intakes. It's available as a smoking accessory for pipes: lots of them for cheap.

As if I had not wavered on this issue enough, I decided to do a second kit which will have all the flooding holes' patterns. There are so many different patterns that I am going to make a kit that has all of them. You, the expert modeller, can fill in the holes not used on your particular boat. This means the kit will not 'be' any particular boat, but will suffice for many different ones. Documentation will be provided so you can basically look up your boat, (or pick one from the list) and proceed. This idea is not mine, it's the brainchild of one of the gurus to whom I owe so much.

I figured that anyone willing to cut up the hull would of course be willing to fill in some extra holes. I expected that the majority of modelers may not want this, especially in light of all the filling and redoing the rivets. So to keep the cost down I skipped it. I did include the patterns around the planes, since those are more difficult to open up, have fewer rivets to redo, and yield the most improved look for the amount of labor involved. Once again, that decision is the result of good advice from another.

The CT floor was fixed per Jeff's prompt, also the deck was reworked extensively to match a couple good photos, and a lot of little details were added in from more photos.

I should have the first run done by June 1st or 2nd, with sales available to the public a week later. The first ones are almost all going to grease the palms of the guys who helped bake the bread, so to speak. You will see good pics of those as soon as I get them in my hot little hands.

It is indeed your sad duck. Well, it's what's going to have to pass for one, anyway. It's pretty tiny.

I forgot to mention, when the second set comes out for the more serious, hull cutting types, it will be strips that have the rivets already on them. It will be hard to get the rivets to consistently end up looking exactly like the factory ones, but if this proves successful it would only require the modeler to fill at the edges and the extra holes not used for his particular boat. If they end up not coming out consistenly, then sanding them off is pretty easy and you go back to the hard way.

WOW! That was fast!......unless you decided to add it before my e-mail.....if not it makes sence.....not sure if other U-BOATS used the sad duck inside the directional antena or not but others might want one too.

Anything is better than what I could do......The U.L.A.D. decal is very nice but ...how to use it?

Yes, they are ready. I completed a short run and posted some pics. The next run should be in my hands June 29, after which I will be able to maintain a small inventory. Maybe I will have them earlier, but I hate to disappoint people.

There is a Paypal shopping cart button on the website. Be sure to go to the USA page because domestic shipping is less expensive. I will fill orders in the order they are received.

Thanks, --Jason

Oh I am going to give the "sad duck" of U-94 a shot. On average, about 3 out of 4 came out okay in the end, so I beefed it up a little for the final art.

Both!

Seriously, each one has it's pros. Modelbrass definitely because it has replacements for the limber holes.

You betch'a !!
And don't forget Eduard. The Modelbrass for the flood ports, conning tower deck, bollard bases and caps and some other stuff. WEM for details not included elseware, like the deck hatches. And, as metioned, Eduards for still more details; intake and flood port grills, fore and after decks, etc
Then there's the Nautilus wood deck and the WEM torpedo loading kit.
And don't forget the CMK torpedo room and control room, due out soon. And, the engine room, later.
Now, who's going to put out a conning tower interior?
And, most recently, there are rumors, that Revell, may come out with alternative conning towers, sometime around June.
We could end up using this kit to build various versions of Type VIIs for the next 40 years.
And, for any one who's sanity is still intact, think about this. What if some evil genius comes out with a Type IX or a XXI of a US Guppy in 1:72? What then???

Don't forgt I offer the same set as Hiro made; but mine has the propeller shafts too; if you need something special like Jeff H needed; i.e. extra 20mm flak; no big deal

standard set with 2 scopes 2 guns (88mm and 20mm) plus the grass propeller shafts is just $36.50

Hokey, are you talking about the Eduard PE, if so, then yes, both are still available. For the Type VIIC, its set number 53008. For the Type VIIC/41 its set 53015. I know Hannants has them both in stock.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
