Need an FFG model!
Posted by templar8777 on Friday, December 17, 2004 12:20 PM
I am seeking an Oliver Hazzard perry Class Frigate model. I'm leaving the navy soon and I am trying to put together a collection of all the ships I've cruised on. The USS Elrod(FFG-55) appears to be as much of a pain in the butt to find as she was to cruise on. If anybody knows where I might find a model of her let me know.

Dragon/DML and Pitroad/Skywave put out several kits in 1/700 scale, and one of those companies recently released another one. I have built about six of these; modeliing different ships used in Desert Storm. The nice thing about their kits is that they have alternate decals for as many as 10 different ships included, as well as extra parts to make the "stretched" frigate. The earlier ones had the low-number frigates, (FFG-7 and on) while the newest release has had upgraded decals showing the most current FFG's now serving.

I don't know about any OH Perry-class FFG's in 1/350 scale, but there is a good possibility that one has been done by one of the above-mentioned companies, or possibly even Trumpeter.

I hope this helps.

The only OHP available in 1/350 is from Yankee Modelworks, in resin. Very nice kit too.

That 1/700 Skywave/Dragon kit is a beauty. It's on my list of "must do" projects. (Unfortunately it's a long list.) I want to make it the U.S.S. Samuel Eliot Morison - not an especially interesting ship in terms of her career, but one of only two warships (so far as I know) that have been named after professional historians. (Hmmm....Maybe that would make an irritating trick question. Can anybody name the other one?)

Hi...
The company "CC Lee" (Chinese I think) makes a Perry in what they say is 1/300 scale. I picked mine up on E-Bay about a year ago, and they are a fairly regular listing. Will run you around $20.00 I suspect. Mine built up into a fairly decent model, just watch allignment when building the deck houses. locating pins and ridges are at a minimum. You will also have to pick up a set of aftermarket hull numbers. The one I got had no decals included. I think there is one up for bid now under models-millitary-sea. Good luck!

Theirs is the USS Reuben James (FFG 57) which is a "short hull".
The "long hull" ships (LAMPS III) are FFG 8, 28, 29, 32, 33, 36-61

I've been building the Dragon version for the past few years using a nice photoetch kit. I served on FFG-24 in the early 80's.
I am also interested in finding a 1/350 scale Adams Class DDG. Anyone know of one?

Hey Duke!

I have a couple of the DML 1/700 OHP kits, one of which is in drydock at the moment. Don't remember seeing the option to build the stretched version.

What indicates that in the kit?

Sounds like a trick question Prof. Tilley..... do you consider Adm. Mahan as a professional historian?

If so, there were at least four other ships named for him, five if you include conversions.

------
Maybe we can get the heavy cruiser 'Tilley" in the next Star Trek movie.

Cheers

Schoonerbum - Nifty idea. I wasn't actually thinking of Mahan; whether one considers him a professional historian or not is, I guess, a matter of opinion. To my knowledge he never worked in an academic institution (other than the Naval War College), but it certainly could be argued that his literary output qualifies him for the title.

The one I was thinking of was George Bancroft. Several warships have been named after him, beginning with the "training gunboat" that was operated for some years by the Naval Academy (and later transferred to the Revenue Cutter Service). The other Bancrofts were destroyers.

He got ships named after him because of his service as Secretary of the Navy; he's often credited with the founding of the Naval Academy in the 1840s. One reason he was so interested in higher education was that prior to going into politics he was a professor of history (at Yale, I believe). The Bancroft textbook on American history was standard reading in college courses around the country for many years.

About the only vessel that could appropriately be named "Tilley" would, I think, be a garbage scow. But thanks for the thought.

Actually REUBEN JAMES is a long hull. I spent many a long day in the Hawaiian sun on her flight deck.
I am currently working on the Lee 1/350 PERRY making it into the REUBEN JAMES. I agree the fitting of the deck house is giving me fits!!!! There are no guide pins to ensure a straight fit and the superstructure is one long piece. The first attempt was a miserable failure.Angry [:(!]

Hi Mike,

I built an FFG model about a year ago, I was on the USS Jarrett (FFG-33). The hull is epoxy resin and all the parts were brass and pewter. It took me about 2 months to build. One thing about it though... the model, for whatever reason, didn't have the bullnose... no big deal though, easy enough to add one. I got the model from a site called BlueWaterNavy.com for roughly $100.00. I would consider this kit and internediate / advanced modelers kit, all the brass parts needed to be bent to shape and the detail work was very in-depth. I just checked their site and it's no longer working. I'll try and track it down for you though.... okay, here you go...

Hi Wizard,

Blue Water Navy was sold to Yankee Modelworks last year, so this is the same kit I was mentioning in the previous post.

It's a nicely done kit, and althoug hit has a few minor errors, it can be made into a great model.

I'm also trying to piece together all the ships I've served on (6 to date), in 1:700 scale. I have the Dragon OHP model, but it does not have the decals for Robert G. Bradley FFG-49. I can piece together the hull numbers but still wouldn't have the name for the stern . Anyone know which version would have those decals? SoonerFan in Virginia.

Note to OHP class modelers
Posted by seasick on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 7:43 PM
Durring the 4th quarter of 2003 the USN inactivated the Mk13 missile launcher aboard the OHP class. The arm structure of the missile launcher has been removed and the rest of the launcher inactivated in place (not removed). With the inactivation of the Mk13 launcher the ship no longer carries any surface to air missiles, there fore the SPG-60 radar has been removed (the disk antenna between the 76mm gun and the mast) . Remaining OHP long hull frigates will have the Phalanx system upgraded from block 1 to block 1B. The Block 1B has infrared targeting system affixed to the right side of the R2D2 radar dome of the gun. There is a proposal to fit the Rolling airframe missile (RAM Mk116) in place of the Mk13 launcher (or more percisely on top of it). Big Smile [:D]

There is a 1/300 model available from Modelcraft I think. I bought it a couple months ago. I have not put it together yet, its on the shelf with the 50 other ships I have not started yet. It was like $30 or so.

So anybody know where I can get 1-2 of the DML/Dragon/Skywave/whatever boxing of the 1/700 OHP?

It seems to be out of production right now and of course I found that out after I'd decided to do the FFG-41...

seasick: Thanks, that's the first place I checked. The website doesn't list a price but their catalog says call, so I'll probably do that next week.

I just purchased a Dragon 1/700 Perry kit from FarEastHobby.com for $18, including shipping, which I thought was a very fair price. It arrived in one piece, although the decals are yellowed (but what the heck, the kit's 9 years old). What I liked most was the fast shipping time, 10 days from order to receipt, and this was across the country! I've waited three weeks, or more, for aftermarket stuff from outfits that are only a few states over from me, so FarEastHobby gets a gold star in my book.

When I built my then Blue Water Navy model, it came with a long hull extention. I haven't built one since the compnay has changed hands but it should have the parts to build long or short hulled versions. FWIW.

One thing I immediately noticed about the Dragon 1/700 kit, some of the warning markings around the missle launcher, 5-inch gun, etc., are MOLDED onto the deck. But they give you decals ... good thing I bought that mini-chisel from Micromark.

Mike,
Just received my 1/300 Perry class Frigate in plastic. I ordered it from Naval Base Hobbies@www.modelshipbuilding.com, cost me like $39.00 and some odd change. It was made by Modelcraft, and comes as the U.S.S. Gallery FFG-26. But includes the decals for all ships in the class. Which I liked, since I am a plank owner of the U.S.S. Sides FFG-14. And that's the ship I was really looking for. Can't really tell you much more about it right now. Got it in the mail and put it up on a shelf, due to me being right at the end of building a 1/350 Arizona. But if you go to the website, there is a picture of the finished model provided. Hope this info helps you out.
