Airfix German Torpedo E-Boat

I am very interested in a group build.

How about others?

I have got my kit but I am delaying opening it until I finish a few projects.  That is not far away at all.

I am building a water line version of my Airfix E Boat so some of the hull inaccuracies I can therefore live with.

First off, I'm glad to see Mr. Ross here. He's one of the most-knowledgable small-combatant historians and modelers I've ever met (or read). Now if I could just get him to write for FSM! :-)

I'm in the middle of a large-scale (1/32) S-100, here's a couple of photos. This is scratchbuilt, no kit.

Don't ya just love those MicroGlass hulls?  I've known Karl for nearly 30 years and am amazed at the quality of his hulls.  He makes BJ's RC lobster boat hull for us and I've got a bunch of his stuff down cellar.  He's based a lot of his hulls on my plans and includes modified versions of them with the kits.

I started out with an old (read 1970-ish) fiberglass S-100 hull/kit. Absolutely terrible...beyond words how bad it was. The only good thing out of the kit was the templates for the wheelhouse and Kalotte. I finally gave up in disgust and got Karl's hull, and you're right, it's amazing. I've actually had fun building this model, even though I'm on a deadline.

As soon as this one is finished (I have two weeks left), I'm thinking about another Schnellboot for myself.

I'm also considering a large-scale PC-461...I'm thinking about Karl's 1/96 hull but I might decide to go bigger and build it in 1/32.

Time time time ... that's all I need at this point!

Sure.  Maybe we can do something with the Italeri PT kit, too.  I'm very curious about this one, especially since they chose 596.  I drew a 1/32 scale set of plans for her years ago.  The only reason I chose 596 was that I had some great photos of her.  There was nothing remarkable about this boat either operationally or technically, so I suspect they may have based it on my drawings.  We'll see... :-}.

I did enjoy seeing the stuff you were doing on the S 100 however I was really conscious of the fact that the Airfix kit discussion became lost or stationery while you and Al discussed matters.

I'm afraid that I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to things that float on water, but I do have a soft spot for the Airfix 1/72 scale boat kits. 

The 'E-Boat' has always been a favourite of mine, since first building one as a child, oh so very many years ago. 

Since than my interest has mainly been focussed on wargaming and 1/72 WWII armoured vehice kits, but my general modelling skills have come along a bit. 

Recently there seems to have been some renewed interest in 1/72 scale boats with Italeri announcing their Italian Torpedo Boat and this got me thinking about the old Airfix range and their 'E-Boat' in particular.

So can anyone tell me what is available in the way of aftermarket parts for this kit?

I've done the usual internet trawl and been rather unsuccesful - Is there really nothing out there or am I having another attack of 'Google Blindness'?

The Scale Shipyard and Loyalhanna Dockyard are both selling the Tian Jie (Tiger King) model of the S-100 in 1/36 scale.  I bought one from Loyalhanna Doclyard at the Toldeo Weak Signals Show.  The kits is very complete with the prop and rudder stuffing tubes already installed.  They include the props, rudders, shafts, two sheets of photo etch details, 5 sheets of CNC cut styrene, lots ot plastic fittings like the life rings, torpedo ends, gun parts, etc.  The model is suitable for radio control.

Hello Garth and everyone on this thread!

I have had the old Airfix E-Boat kit with me for 25 years. I remember when it came out in 1976 and for a little kid I knew it was out of my price league! In the early 80's I bought it and then came 22 years in the military so it is only now that I am finally getting around to build it. I know the kit is old and from reading this thread there seems to be alot of inacccuracies. What exactly is inaccurate with the kit? I do want to build it, but would like to take care of and fix any problems along the way!

The Revell kit is much better ...............

Various things sir.

Things like the torpedo tubes being too forward, the shape of the hull and bilge not being accurate. 

I am not a modeler myself, I'm disabled and can't build models myself but people like Dave Krakow - my esteemed co-author on SCHNELLBOOT IN ACTION and Steve Wiper and Jeff Herne have told me that if one wants an accurate S-10 Class boat from that Airfix kit, one should do a lot of scratchbuilding. 

In fact sir, Mr. Wiper told me that, in the end - a builder would have a scratchbuilt model instead of a kit. 

My advice; look at a lot of reference photos and go from there.
