Royal Australian Navy kits.. Anything?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 7, 2007 5:14 AM

I am really interested in building something in 1/350 scale to represent the modern Royal Australian Navy RAN. I am in the process of building a display with modern Air Force Aircraft and Army Aircraft, but I would like to build a ship to represent the Navy, with a chopper in 1/48 scale to go with it..

Anyone know of any kits. Or for that matter, any class of ship that is a replica of a class from an other country maybe that I can scratch into an Australian version...

Perry-class Frigates --- sure are!  IIRC they are called the Adelaide-class down there.

In 1:700 scale PitRoad made a styrene Perry,  with decals for the Adelaides.   Also, IIRC, Revell of Germany repopped the kit.

In 1:350 scale there is nothing in plastic,  but in resin you can find a long-hull Perry from Yankee Modelworks and a short-hulled Perry from Iron Shipwright.

In an odd-ball scale mix Scalecraft Question [?] made a styrene Perry which is reported to be (according to the box) in 1:300 scale.  It is labeled as the Gallery.   The trouble with the kit is that while the hull is in 1:300 scale the superstructure is closer to 1:350 scale.   It is a bathtub toy for sure.  There is no aftermarket support for such a bastard scale mismash.

I believe this was the basis for the Dragon kit which gives you the option of a full hull or waterline model.

I am almost sure that this kit is also available under the "CC Lee" label. Either way, Ed is right - pretty much a bathtub toy - it even has a motor Propeller [8-]

If you want to go a bit earlier than present RAN, Dragon also has the Adams Class DDG's in 1/700, from which you could model Perth (38), Hobart (39) or Brisbane (41).

If you want to try one of the support vessels, you could possibly use the (resin) 1/700 Newport Class LST (JAG Collective) to bash HMAS Manoora (ex USN LST-1193 Fairfax County) or HMAS Kanimbla (ex USN LST-1188 Saginaw) (though I believe there have been rather extensive mods done)

Chris, check out Fleetline Models down in Victoria, http://members.optusnet.com.au/starline/
They have, among other kits, Collins and Oberon class subs.
Cheers, Chris

I dont know where I read it. But I was doing a search for Australian Navy ships, and thought I found something regarding a class of ship that was similar to a modern German ship.. For the life of me, cant remember what I was looking at?

The Australian ANZAC class frigate is based on the German Meko 200 design.

As far as I am aware, there are no kits of either type.

Greetings from OZ,

Check out www.ozmodskits.com  this address may have changed, if it doesn't work, do a 'google' for Ozmods Model kits.

He has one kit in 350 scale of HMAS Vampire, a Daring class destroyer from the 60-70s. It is priced at $AU 143 plus $AU 45 postage, it's a largish box, resin parts including a solid hull in two pieces to allow you to do 'waterline', so it weighs a bit.

He also does some kits in 600 and 700 scales, but your question was 350 scale.

Cheers,

Roger.

I was going to mention OzMods - I can't speak for the ship, but if his resin 1/144 aftermarket airplane bits are any indication, it should be a great little kit.

Hi Chris, there is an Acadamy Kit of the Oliver Perry Class Destroyer which is a replica for HMAS Adelaide, Darwin, Sydney, and Hobart.

Good luck, Knocker

There are only a couple of options. Academy does an Oliver Hazard Perry in 1-350. You can get Decals for the RAN Version and A/M P/E to build an Aussie Frigate. Dodo Models does some beautiful Anzac Class Frigates. They are 1-700 scale and are Resin and P/E. The Anzacs are a modified German Meko 2000 Class Frgate. Orange Hobbies also do an Adelaide Class Assault Carrier in Resin and P/E in 700 scale.....Cheers Mark

Since Knocker resurrected a 13 year old thread with old info, I'll add some more current stuff

Showcase Models of Australia (now closed due to the unfortunate death of the owner) made a 350 scale injected HMAS Collins submarine.  It made fairly wide distribution.   Showcase also made a 350 scale injected HMAS Vendetta destroyer of WWI.   Extremely well done, but not widely available due to the death.

To see an RAN ship, head over to the 50 Shades of Grey group build. The Academy Oliver Perry built as HMAS Melbourne with scratch built details and Ronin decals.

There's also this guy in Australia: https://ozmods-kits.com/1-350-ship-kits/

I haven't bought one of his ships but his aircraft, aircraft accessories and decals have all been excellent.
