U-Boat Tamiya paint questions
Posted by mg42gunner on Sunday, June 10, 2007 9:13 AM
Hi everyone, Im starting to build my Revell 1:72 uboat. This kit is huge! Right now I am in the process of using a dremel to open all of the holes along side the sub, but I wanted to have paint ready for when I finish, and begin assembly. I am wondering what paint you guys reccomend to use from the tamiya line. Ive decided to model the early version of U-552, so I get to use the net cutter on the front. (Very cool looking) I will also be using the Tamiya spray cans, as I dont have an airbrush yet. For the lower hull, I think German Gray (TS-4) will be the right color, but I am not sure about the upper hull and deck colors. The instructions say to use a lighter gray for the upper hull, and a color very close to the lower hull for the deck. I was thinking of using AS-16 for the upper hull, as it seems to be the right shade of light gray. Im not sure about the deck. Do these colors sound right to you guys? Thanks for your help.

For my U-boat, I used Testors Dark Aircraft Grey for the upper uboat and aircraft grey for the lower. Can't help you with the wood. Your colors sound good.

On the bench:

1/35 Tamiya M26 Pershing-0%

1/144 Minicraft P-38J Lightning-50%

Numerous 1/35 scale figures in various stages if completion.

Thanks for the reply, I think ill order these paint colors. For the deck I did some searching and it seemed to be painted with around the same color as the lower hull, so I think with some weathering it can turn out to be a bit lighter.

Are  you going to rust any part of the hull?

Yea, Ill be applying some rust marks to the conning towwer, and the from the upper hull to the waterline. I also might try some type of algae effect on the boat, but Im not sure yet. Would the wood on a uboats deck show through the paint in places of wear? I dont want to do this to my model if it didnt happen on the real thing.

You are right on target witht he wear and decks. For heaps of good info, check out Dougie Martindale's very well researched article on U-boot colors:

Could you photograph the process? I am thinking of building the Zvezda ZVE9007 Kursk nuke sub is why I ask and I got a Dragon weathering kit but to date I have never weathered anything before. Except for my head when I am at the beach just prior to a hurricane.

Sure thing, ill try to take pictures the whole way. Im no expert builder, and I plan to build the sub OOB. (its expensive enough by itself) but I know how much I like it when people do step by steps of thier builds. Not much to show now, as im just trying to drill out the vent holes, and I need to order the paint. But schools nearly out (just tomorow left) and ive only got one more final exam, so I can get back into moddeling again.

I hear, ya. My son, little peewee junior, just gradudated from the community college one quarter earlier than expected. He is now scrambling to get admitted into the University of Washington for the fall quarter instead of the winter quarter as per the original plan. He had learned this past Tuesday that he had enough credits to grad which placed him last minute into the commencement excercise 4 days later.

If you can do it thanks for the step by step. I have a German Uboat U99 and the Kursk so I may try to follow your progress with one or the other.

Okay, before I place the final order for the spray paint I will need, I have one more question. I am using german grey, TS-4 tamiya paint for the lower hull color. Is it ok if I use this same color for painting the deck? Or does the deck need to be a different color gray. Thank you all for your help, and I promise to get some pictures up soon.
