new and trying to figure out these colors
Posted by Mrchntmarine on Monday, October 10, 2016 5:05 PM

so this is my second model since getting back into it.  im doing a 1/700 waterline series. way back when, i just painted.  but now im trying to be a little more accurate and this is starting to bother me as i have a difficult tme with colors anyway.  so, model calls for japanese naval arsenal color sc01 which i guess is hard to find - at least here - not a lot of hobby shops.  according to directions, aproximate color is mr. color 32, dark gray(2), which the hobby shop does not have.  so they suggested and i used humbrol 32 Matt and this is what i get compared to the shot on the box.  mine looks almost black.  any suggestions on what do do now?  I don't think it looks close.  tks

I have zero clue about Japanese colors (other than a few basic aircraft colors)...and really don't know a lot about colors for much of anything. If we're talking shades of grey...and your color is too dark...add a little white. On the real thing, colors change, fade, weather, etc. Even if you had the exact color...by the time you do a little weathering and add your final clear coats, it'll be different anyway.

I know, that doesn't really answer your question...just a different approach, for what it's worthToast

Which ship are you building? Both Tamiya and Testors make various naval grays, one of which may be a match for what you need.

That does not work either. Any chance you can just say what you are trying to post by those links?

okay, not to hijack my own thread, but...  i did some checking on the site on how to post pictures using google pics and thought i had it.  no good.  tried again and got the pics to show up.  however, when i sign out of google on my other browser tab and stay signed in to finescale, i continue to see the pictures and for some reason no else can.  however, if i sign out of finescale and sign back in, no good - the pictures are gone ??  not sure wht the heck is going on or how to use google pics.  i really dont want to have to sign up for another account somewhere else.

all i was trying to show is the difference in the provided color picture with the model and what i actually have using humbrol 32 which looks almost black to me.  anyhow the lesson learned is for me to have used a color deemed appropriate and not to have started with something so off....  ill remember everytime i look at the model as i don't feel like redoing everyting now.

any tips as how to use google pictures is appreciated.  tks!

Well, I cant help you with posting the images. But photos are very subjective for dealing with color due to many variables.

My point was what ship are you building. Lets say you're building USS Whatever and the kit instructions recommend Gray H-xx from whatever paint line, and as you said it's not available. You cross referenced it to color Y-xx in another paint line, but it does not look right to you.

Oftentimes paint color call outs on instruction sheets are inaccurate or mistaken. Research the actual build subject to see what colors are supposed to be used. This is easier on some subjects than others. Then go to your favorite paint line and see if that color is available thru their line up. If so, great. If not, go to an alternative.

Ignore the paint colours in the above picture, more important is the number you provided SC01 - which seems to be associated with the Kure naval yard (each of the four main IJN ship builders had their own shade of grey).

Tamiya does stock that specific colour, labelled as XF-75.

Snyder & Short also did IJN paint chips, but being digitally presented here, take it with a grain of salt.

regards,

Jack

edit, well the link to the colour chips has been removed, but you can easily google it or visit their web page.  Also, ask about the Kure naval yard ship colour in the Ship Building section of the forums.

Testors also makes a Kure Gray in their new Marine Colors line. So Tamiya and Testors both provide an option in place of Gunze.

stikpusher & jack - thanks for the help and tips. ill check it out, but for now i think I'm stuck with the color i did as i haven't made up my mind if i want to redo. anyhow, as I've noticed there is a big difference in colors. check out the difference in the xf75 and sc01 https://goo.gl/photos/k7z9nkVGtdP8pF1S8 not sure if the above will link or you have to cut and paste. i actually highlight it and right click and choose go to link tks again - William

Yeah, I think the last link you have there, SC01 is an actual printed label, further distorted by the digital process.  Even if you do an image search on the Tamiya colour, you get at least two different grays for the same bottle of paint. That said, the Tamiya swatch looks much closer to the Snyder & Short paint chip - quite dark and very noticeable blue tint to it.

Interesting note, they did a second chip set with two more Kure samples.  Too bad though, the thumbnail link on their site is broken, so it can't be viewed.  There is this pdf paint list for Vallejo ship colours, and it mentions two options for Kure, and one of which is without the blue tint.

So bottom line, when you factor in scale and weather effects, there are a number of possible outcomes.

regards,

Jack
