Acrylics vs. Enamels
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 10:57 PM
I have returned to modeling recently and having been hitting the internet pretty hard picking up techniques, tips, tricks, etc. and I have a question for all "experienced" modelers out there.

Knowing what you know now, in your opinion, do you prefer Acrylics or Enamels for the beginner modeler? In the past I have exclusively used enamel paint, Testors (Model Master) to be specific, due to it's ready availability and low price. I hate, however, the clean up Yuck [yuck] so the Acrylics are becoming attractive for me from a comfort & safety stand point. I am only hand brushing or using spray cans at this time. Don't have the $$$ for an airbrush yet but hopefully next year I will venture into that territory. I appreciate any information you are willing to pass along.

If this has been covered already, I apologize, please point me in the right direction. I looked but didn't see anything that matched my question.

Vridis, this is one of those questions that often comes down to personal preference.

I like acrylics because they are less noxious than enamels, important when you share your craft room with the household autorities, can be thinned with water or alcohol, and therefore clean up is both easier and faster than with enamels. This is especially so when airbrushing.

Having said that it takes time to get used to brush painting acrylics, as they dry faster than enamels and therefore require a slightly different technique. I still use enamels for some detail work, just because I have them and can't bare to waste them.

Hope this helps

I'm a die-hard enamel user myself. I've pretty much been using MM enamels as long as I've been modeling. I don't mind the cleanup, and I work in my garage, away from the "household authorities" as it were.

It's all a comfort level and what you are used to using. I really like the finish I get from enamels, especially when airbrushed. However, I've heard others that swear by their acyrlics.

Good luck, whatever you choose!

Acrylics for me.

Here are two long threads on the subject:

Thread #2

The article by Foster7155 in the second one is especially good

As stated above, it's a matter of personal preference. I chose to go the acrylic route for about 90% of my painting. Anything that is airbrushed will most definitely be acrylic. Easier to use, easier to clean, nice results. I only use enamels for some brush painting, and even that not much.

im Guess when you say Acrylics you are talking about Water base... There is a New Paint line Called Auto Air Color and they have a very fine line of new paints in Water base but like all Water Base if you want it to look good and be pretected you have to shoot it with Urethane Lacquer Clear Coat and this will make it look as good as any Enamul or can Lacquer out there. Also if you are in to doing a lot of graphics then this will be right up your way because if you mess up all you have to do is wash it off and start over. After each coat of graphics you would want to shoot on what they call inter coat clear or Mid Coat Clear (same stuff) this will pertect the stuff you have done already and you can paint over the top of this.

Auto Air is also supposed to be heat set which might be troublesome on plastics, although a hair dryer would probably do the trick.
Auto Air doesn't have to be clear coated with uros, but they are the best.
Also remember that urethane clears are the most toxic paint you can spray as they contain isocyanates.
Auto Air is also much harder to find locally so mail order would most likely be needed each time you bought some.

Auto Air does not have to be Heat to dry them.. I think you are thinking of the old stuff and the new stuff is a lot different. Because they do not attack the plastic at all in any way shap or forum. But it does ask to Clear Coat with Urethane Lacquer Clear which is the best results.. And fineding them its easy and do not have to mail order them inless you live in the woods or on top of a mountin. lol Just go down to your local Body Shop and they can order them in or even may start carrying them because of the Fed's are pushing a lot harder in to wanting this stuff the top of the line market. Also Auto Air is working on a Clear Coat for there paint line that will be as hard as Urethane Clears are.

Can you provide some more info on this new clear that you expect to come from Auto Air? Two-part, single part, expected release, etc?

From Createx's website:

"Curing in Open Conditions- Recommended minimum temperature 70ºF and low humidity. Curing Auto Air Colors in humid or cold damp conditions may require extended exposure to heat. Use airflow to speed up drying time. Cure when colors are wet or dry.

Auto Air Colors are cured with heat. Use heat gun or infra-red lamp to cure colors. If not curing with heat, allow colors ample time to dry prior to taping or clear coat application. Drying time will vary depending upon environment.

In Infra-red lamp (IR) – allow lamp to cure colors at a safe distance generally over 12 inches to prevent blistering paint. Duration may vary from 5 – 30 mins. coat buil-up, wetness and conditions. Cure colors dry to the touch without tack.

A heat gun is effective when curing smaller areas such as body panels, tanks, fenders, helmets, etc. Generally colors cure 1-2 minutes per square foot. Keep heat gun moving and at a safe distance of 6” or more to avoid blistering. Cure colors dry to touch without tack."

Although they don't have to be heatset, Createx does recommend it. That is what I was referring to.

Urethanes and lacquers are two different clearcoats.

If the body shop has to order them then why not just call Dixie Art or Bear Air and order them yourself?

Mike

I can not say on what it is all i know is the person that has the michigan area has talk to us about this. I wanted it more to bring to the hobby line and offer it to you people on this product. Its not the same stuff that Cretix had on there line years ago so it is way different and if you think it comes out looking any different please look in my Photo Album

http://public.fotki.com/shawCustom/shaw_show_cars_for_2004/page3.html

This was the test body.. its done in White base coat sealer 2 coats and then 3 Coats of Flame Oragne with 2 coats of Urethane Laqcuer clear over this is all. At the Paint shop today they said it looks better if night brighter then the Urethane Color paint jobs that i have done already. You can look at all the other models in my folders and this is the only body that has ben done using the water base paints and they are the top of the line and my list as of now because of health issues.

And also you are right that the Lacquer in a can and Acrylic Urethane Lacquer is two different stuff... The can maybe like what you buy Dupli is crap when it comes to the Acrylic Urethane Lacquer that is a two part and is harder and nicer looking then what you use.

Also Here is the Link to the Main Site and read up on it might help you if you go to the right link in stead of wanting to think Cretix had this stuff.

SCH3,

You should do your homework before you spout off at the mouth
Createx is the company that produces Auto Air.
I DID NOT say that it is the same product as Createx.
They are very similar but not the same.
I have been using Createx's products for 12 years now and I think I know what I am talking about.

The quote I posted was from the AutoAir website, not the Createx website.

Auto Air's address:

AUTO AIR COLORS
14 Airport Park Road,
East Granby, CT 06026

Createx's address:
Createx Colors
14 Airport Park Road
East Granby, CT. USA 06026

Wow! I would say that is the same company wouldn't you? Whistling [:-^]
I just love it when newbies come here and think they know more than the rest of us. Sigh [sigh]

Well let's see, I have almost 5000 posts here and you have less than 20.
Are we to take your word for it then?
It is obvious from your lack of spelling and grammer that you are obviously young and just trying to be helpful. I appreciate that but learn some respect from those in the know.

Hokay, folks, this one's getting a little too heated. Let's agree to disagree, each of us do careful research on any products we use, and enjoy the upcoming holiday.

I'd also suggest that people learn a little grammar and spelling.  Some of the posts throughout this thread have been utterly incomprehensible.  I came to it hoping to learn a little about acrylics versus enamel, and I can't even tell what people are talking about.

Nah... me hav'in fun chasing bears and moose!   Evil [}:)]

Wow this was an old heated thread.

Acrylics vs. Enamels?
Do a model with each and see what you prefer.
They both have their good and bad points. At least from what I've read here.
