Pop Ups
Posted by MKelley on Sunday, June 9, 2013 10:20 PM

I am constantly getting pop ups about buying back issues and other how to magazines. Plus something at the bottom about geting on the email list for alerts. I find this very annoying. I would like to suggest that this practice stop. I am already signed up for alerts and I don't need the other things. I have had a subscription since sometime in the mid 80's.

My browser (Firefox) has a popup blocking tool, which I have enabled.  Yet I still get a lot of popups.  My daughter found out that some hackers have found the secret of the popup blocking and are using it to get around the block.

Now, to me that is the same as spam.  I am not sure that some advertisers know computers or computer culture well enough to know that paying folks for popup ads, or making them themselves, irritates a bunch of us users.  I am disappointed that FSM is using this sort of advertising (some of the popups I get at this web site are indeed FSM ads).  We have to educate legitimate businesses that using spamming techniques is not really legitimate advertising!  I have also complained to my pharmacy (a big nationwide chain) who also seems to be flooding the web with their ads.

I get that this forum is associated to a magazine which is in the business of selling said magazines.

But especially for a logged in user I cannot imagine that they will sell a single magazine this way.  We are fully aware the magazine exist, and many already have subscriptions.

Maybe save the pop ups for the unregistered lurkers.

See this thread for a previous discussion on the popups:

cs.finescale.com/.../153495.aspx

According to the editors, it's Kalmbach Publishing that governs the advertising popups that we see when we access the forum.

The pop-ups are here to stay. The crack marketing team hasn't figured out that most of the world has despised pop-ups for almost ten years.

They remind me of those stupid inserts in magazines, you know that loose junk that keeps getting in  your way. Biggest difference is that you can at least through those away. FSM, please treat your guests with a bit more respect.

I wouldn't even mind one FSM popup a day..  But when I get one every couple of minutes, or each time I go to a new forum, that is just too much!

They are super annoying. And if I close all of them every time and don't ever buy anything from FSM pop-up, can some computer dude figure it out, say, if certain computer user/pop-up recipient closes the add in 5 sec 100 times, that person is not interested in buying anything ever.

Reminds me of those boring telemarketers who always call with the same thing.

Send your contemplates to Kalmbach  Publishing

It won't do any good but at least you will have sent it to the true source of your complaint.

It wouldn't be so bad if it were only Kalmbach.  I am getting flooded with popup videos about drugs, makeup, softdrinks- you name it. The sound makes it doubly irritating.  This seems to be the modern form of spam. I guess the spam blockers for email are getting too good.  Now folks seem to have learned how to overcome the popup blockers for browsers, so the web is now the advertising spam venue of choice :-(

Saw this on TV (WUSA, Washington, DC). DISCONNECT is a browser extension that stops major third parties and search engines from tracking the webpages you go to and searches you do. DISCONNECT makes the web more private, less cluttered, faster, and safer.

If DISCONNECT can find a way to stop these popups, why can't the browser coders?

What are you using when you get all these pop ups? I typically am working on a Windows 7 machine and use Google Chrome most of the time but I also use IE occasionally and absolutely never see a pop-up add on any machine I work on. The only security software I run is AVG.

DISCONNECT will NOT the “lite” pop-ups, e.g., Kalmbach, BUT it zaps some über spam pop-ups — those pop-up&pop-up&pop-up&pop-up&pop-up&pop-up&pop-up etc.

Occasional factual, grammatical, or spelling variations are inherent to this thesis and should not be considered as defects, as they enhance the individuality and character of this document.

I'm using Mozilla Firefox.  I get pop ups all the time, especially VIDEO!  I have kept it updated- maybe the Mozilla guys are just overwhelmed.  I don't have enough C coding experience to be much help.

I've decided, after a lot of thought, to argue against more forums.  Heck, so many folks already have no idea how many forums there are, and are constantly mis-posting.  If folks would merely read the descriptions of the existing forums things would be a lot better!
