Reality Modeling?
Posted by SteveA on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 6:57 PM

Ok, catchy subject title (maybe).

Just a thought.. have the staff of FSM ever thought of promoting modeling through some type of "take some novice modelers and work with them to create an award winning model?" Possibly have several willing master modelers take a novice under their wing and work with them? I know real life may interfere and trying to do this over the internet may be difficult but still think it may be interesting to watch and learn.

Any others have any input, negative or positive?  (Guess you can tell I have nothing better to do thank think up something like this)...  anyways look forward to reading some of the responses. Who knows.. may be something the folks at FSM can use for an article to spice things up a bit.

Good idea. It's been done.

FSM ran a series some years ago, where they took one of the office girls at Kalmbach - a total novice - and took her through building at least a car and a dinosaur, as I recall.

It wasn't under the wing of a master, but it hits the right idea. I like it. I rate this thread a four.

Thank you Dahut. Too bad I missed that issue. Anyone know what issue that was? I would be interested in seeing if the issue was still available.

As memory serves, it was after the change to the newer, glossy format/font change. I'd put it early 90's.

There were a couple of different stories in the same vein as part of the "Almost straight from the box" series we ran for a while:

Look for Monica Freitag's Honda Civic in March 1996. (Monica is still here, by the way. You'll find her mug on the New Products page).

Intern Jenni Kamke Black airbrushed a triceratops in July 1994.

Marcia Stern tried her hand at decaling in December 1996. (Actually a "Basic Techniques, Advanced Results" story.)

Cheers!

It's not so cold, just really, really snowy. I'm thankful all we got out of the storm was snow and not the brutal tornados that hit the South.

Those are the ones Aaron. Thanks for chiming in. My memory isnt what it once was (maybe never was!) and I had them off by a few years. The Honda Civic and Tri-tops were the ones I recall. I think along in that timespan is where I stopped getting the mag and drifted into other hobbies.

Can you believe I sold my entire collection of FSM on eBay a few years back? In a fit of home fix-up purging, I "divested" myself of them. What a lot of self-delusional, horses-arse rubbish, eh? It's nice to be back...

Glad to have you back. I'm always amazed by this. I'll think: There was an article about something in particular and it was just a year or two back. Then I start looking and it turns out it was 8-10 years ago. I'm not sure what it means except maybe time flies when you have a hobby you enjoy?Big Smile [:D]

Yeah, it's something like that, Aaron! I'm pretty sure what it means, but I think I'll stick to your version :)

You know, one thing I think would be helpful, is having video available on here.  Just small ones demonstrating certain techniques.  Just to see the movements of the hands and the like.  I've read hundreds of howto's with pictures showing how to paint on scratches in armor, but mine all still look painted on despite following everything exactly to the letter.  Being able to see like a 10-15 second video of someone doing this would be great, and would add to the reality theme I think.  The modeler channel has a few video's but only one showing technique and it actually works quite well.  I'm sure the modeler channel website would be more then happy to actually host the video's if they are given permission to post them on their site as part of their content, with an obvious plug to FSM and Kalmbach for providing the video's.  For some of my stuff, I would be glad to take video to demonstrate.
