August 2015 revamp - technical issues
Posted by Tim Kidwell on Friday, August 7, 2015 9:13 AM

All,

If you come across a technical issue (a missing button or search field, something's not formatting correctly, etc.) please put it into this thread. I know some of these things have been dropped into other threads (for example, New Look), but we need to gather them into a single area for online to look at.

This is not a place to complain about the white background. That's the look for the site and will not change. We're here to get the kinks worked out of the Forum's operation. In a few days, we'll take a look at the compiled list and start pushing out the fixes.

Thanks,

Tim

Don Stauffer: Mark as read function

Shipwreck: Besides my manage profile/settings box, there is nothing to manage the posts and no way of searching the forum. Is there a new way of doing this?

This is for members using Internet Explorer 11

On the previous version of the forum software, it was necessary to add finescale.com to the compatibility view list to enable access to the formatting elements when writing a forum post.

Since the upgrade, you will need to remove finescale.com from the compatibility view list, otherwise the formatting element menu will not be available and users' signature images will not be displayed.

Hey Tim. Can't see who's online anymore. Didn't know if it's been brought up or not yet but thought I'd bring it to light. Thanks, Joe

My Subscriber only content is still locked. Also found a new issue. In my private messages, tehre are a couple of very long conversations that have been on goign for acouple of years. They used to be spread out over different pages. But now its only one page and stops after so many messages, so i can't see new ones. I don't think this is an issue with otehrs, so not sure if its linked to the subcriber only content issue.

1) My Discussions- to include all that a member has participated in, not just the ones the member started.

2)Last Post- a single step method to go to the most recent post on any thread. Currently it is a two to three step process that must be follwed everytime.

3)PMs- long running PM conversations can not access the later messages

4)Spell Check- I do not think I need to elaborate on why that is a benefit to all of us here

5) Formatting onto small mobile screens- photos make it too wide to see either all text or the photos off my iphone- the lack of the pinch zoom ability on the new reactive screen makes mobile usage almost useless.

I've been wondering if the lack of a spell check might aid in returning English Grammar / spelling to a pre AD 1700 timeframe.Hmm

Or, Maybe not.Wink

Could still use a " quick return to the top of the page " feature ....just sayin'

The lack of a "Forum Search" function is a major weakness. One of the most useful features of the Old Look version was the ability to look up stuff in the forums.

I have mixed feelings about the absence of the spell checker. It stuck more misspellings into my posts than it fixed.

Is the old automatic censor function still there? Can I type Moby *** now?

Addendum: Guess not. Sorry, Mr. White Whale.

Judging by the new forum look:

Moby is now the right colour , just not the right whale............

.

I am gonna miss that search function- especially when I need to search for posts on the whaling ship "Charles W. Morgan".Crying

The lack of a "Forum Search" function is a major weakness. One of the most useful features of the Old Look version was the ability to look up stuff in the forums.

Roger that!

As far as the spellll check goes.... I typed this whole thing in Word to cut/paste here.

The amount of scrolling needed now is crazy.  After doing dozens of counts in various threads trying to keep the turning of the scroll wheel as consistent as possible the average was about 32-35 turns of the wheel to get to the bottom of a page.  1 page was 50 Tongue Tied  Granted I never counted on the old site, but it didn't seem so bad that I thought I needed to.

And what's up with this?   Scrolling down through 5 pages of posts in the "New Look" thread, here's the bottom of page 4...

Click on "5" and this is at the top of the page...

Now I want to go back to 4.  Wait, there isn't a 4.  But there is a "<<First" button that takes me back to a view 1,2,3,4,5.

Or a "<<" button that'll also take me to a view of 1,2,3,4,5

2 ways to get back must not have been enough because there is a "-1" button.  Now you're just screwin' with us.  That's a total of 7 buttons to get to a view of 5 buttons.Whistling

Marc, personally, i don't find it any more tedious to get from the top to bottom of a page than last time. Getting to the end of a thread is slight more annoying, not being able tojump straight ot the last post. And finding thred you are commenting on is a bit more time consuming.

The issue with the -1 page i noticed yesterday but its not showing for me at the moment.

Now that I have been able to view the new site via mobile AND laptop, I will weigh in.

On PC/laptop, overall, the site is better I think. The search still needs to be fixed, and being able to look through an individuals posts would be greatly appreciated. But in terms of layout and usability, the new site is in upgrade.

However, in terms of mobile, it is absolutely terrible. First off, in order to view the site on mobile, I have to turn my phone 90 degrees. Which may sound petty, but its harder to scroll, read, ect looking at a phone that way. And to be blunt, I shouldn't HAVE to rotate my phine in order to use a MOBILE website. Period. Here is a screen shot of what it looks like holding your phone like normal.

This new site is NOT mobile friendly. This new site is 3 steps backwards from the last configuration, which had a devoted mobile site mind you. I mean come on, it is the year 2015. Having a user friendly mobile site should be a higher priority than it seems FSM has made it to be. There are other things too, but they have already been touched upon by others on here.

One last thing. I have read that the new site is designed to be "clean looking" and "smoother." Well let me say that from a consumer standpoint, the all-white colorless site, coupled with the fact that there is no devoted mobile site and it is just the regular page compressed, that does not look clean and smooth to me. It looks cheap and short sighted.

I apologize if that sounds offensive, but that is my PERSONAL opinion. I still love the community here. And i appreciate FSM providing a place for it to take place.

Best regards,

Alex.

1.  The site is not "mobile" friendly at all.

2.  Signatures cause the posts to be off the screen on mobile.

3.  Checking or unchecking "show signatures" under settings no longer works.

4.  The left side where the avatars are located is way too big.  Takes up too much valuable screen space on mobile

Hello, everyone. Thanks for listing your issues in this thread as we work to iron out some of the kinks associated with the new site launch. A few things:

- We are looking into the search function and the ability to see who else is online, and hope to soon resolve both those issues.

- The spellcheck feature for the community software we currently use is not compatible with most browsers. However, most browsers and mobile devices have their own spellcheck feature that you can use.

- To avoid scrolling to the bottom of the page, you can adjust the order in which posts appear by clicking on the "Order Descending" tab at the top of the thread, which will show the most recent posts first.

- In order to display images properly (particularly in the mobile format), use the "Insert Images" option, found in the "Insert" drop-down located above the toolbar. This will help to size all graphics and images you use. If you copy and paste an image directly into the body copy, it might not display properly.

Hope this helps to address some of your issues. Thanks!

Yeah, I'll second that one.  Though, it's not that big a deal, it's a low to medium severity issue for me.

When you magnify the page using the browser zoom function at the bottom of the screen in IE11 to rescale the page to 200%, the navigation bar eg: Home » FineScale Modeler » Forums » Feedback, Help and Testing » Forum Feedback & Error reporting becomes non-responsive.

It appears to work fine at other magnification levels.

I miss the ability to view what my post will look like prior to sending it. Also, missing the spell check is a real drag. It’s hard to believe that

Yup, sounds like several features that we were used to: spellcheck, forum search, simpler navigation, mobile device compatibility, etc. were not thought of by the folks who did the new software, or were discarded for whatever reason and we are left to deal with it. I really hope they did not pay a lot for this.

No kidding. Does every website have this many holes/fixes that needed to be addressed after a redo? Or did the people behind this just have no clue what they were designing the website for. As I have said before, seems very cheap and very short sighted.

Tim, it's just a bit frustrating that 5 days into the change that issues we your customers brought up within a few hours of launch have not been addressed. I remember the last changoever was mostly appearance and less functionality, but your team respond more swiftly to issues that we brought up. I realize that two of the past five days were weekend, and it was not likely for anyone to do work on this, but nothing appears to have changed so far. This is not meant as personal attacks to anyone on staff there. But we really are hoping to hear about, and better yet see, progress on correcting these shortcomings.

OTOH, the term customers is a loose one. It's a free forum. Sure many are subscribers, but that isn't what fuels the forum I can safely state. That's the advertisers.

So you know, while constructive suggestions are being sought, there's a LOT of whining going on as well.

I think folks need to go cut some sprue.

I found a new gig. When posting a message, the "insert/edit video" icon does not seem to work. I copied the url address for a video off of youtube, pasted that address in the appropriate box, then hit ok to post it. No link or anything appeared on my post.
