Who am I and why did I join...
Posted by Mapdog on Saturday, March 28, 2015 10:38 AM

My name is Mike.  I retired from the Navy after 26 years.  I am married and have two adult children.

My retirement gift from USS Enterprise was a 1:48 scale model Tomcat.  It was detailed pretty nicely and built by somebody I met.  The kit was Revell.

I used to build models as a kid.  I never knew any technique or had an airbrush but I put together a couple of good ones.

It has a few broken parts and I want it to look good when it is repaired.  I don't really have any idea how to proceed.  The issues are:  Both vertical stabs are off.  1 can be glued easily but the other has the insertion tab broken off.  The NLG has one broken wheel.  None of the landing gear impresses me on alignment or detail.  I can't seem to find an aftermarket metal replacement kit.

Does anyone have any recommendation or offers to help repair?  I can pay for service.

Welcome Mike!  There are plenty of modellers aboard who could fix her up as good as new.

Example:  http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/164115.aspx

You might want to post this request in the "Aircraft" forum (if you haven't already.

Welcome to the Forums Mike!  Glad to have you aboard!

Thank you for your service.   Be sure to post pics of the Tomcat so we can get a look at it.

Mike,

Welcome to the forums.

The stabs can easily be reatached by drilling a small hole where the insertion pin was and gluing a metal pin in it's place. As far as the landing gear, you may have to do a little scratch building to achieve the degree of detail your looking for.

Start a new post in the aircraft section and post some pictures of your Tomcat so we can take a look at you issues.

Thank you for your service.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.
