Epitome of a noob
Posted by wwcharles76 on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 7:19 AM

Hey everyone my name is Waylon im from the upper peninsula of Michigan and i just jumped head first into modelling a couple weeks ago with a 1/700 scale academy HMS Titanic model. I struggled through it but felt like I learned what I needed as I went along. I probably made every mistake a new guy can make. Bought the wrong paints, used to much glue, learned that super gluing a model to your fingers hurts, cut a mast in half And fixed it with plastic cement, broke a blade on my hobby knife. realized how much I hate ships Lol. but in the end I completed it and i had a lot of fun along the way.

i just received a Tamiya 1/35 m41 walker bulldog that I plan to start on this weekend. It looks big compared to the titanic model and a quick look at the instructions have me feeling confident that the build will go easily. so I plan to start my foray into painting. I'm especially interested In trying to weather this model. I reaserch like Gandalf in the Minas Tirith library. And after pouring over the ancient internet tomes decided to get some future varnish and assorted premixed washes by Mig and Vallejo. along with enamel paints I already had I was hoping you guys could give me a few pointers. I'll probably chronicle this build in a different thread.

Now I'll tell you a little about myself. i love this hobby because it's very cheap and I'm an absolute history nut. I have been civil war and ww2 reenacting for over 10 years and in that time I've had some cool experiences with historical arms and armor. I've had the privilege to have helped build two mountain howitzer artillery pieces and fire them with the 5th Wisconsin battery. I've ridden on an original kettenkrad and got to get up close and personal with Sherman's and One of very few running hetzer tank destroyers left in the world. I've travelled to almost every state in a 1000 mile radius to pursue reenacting. As you can imagine that gets expensive. A lot has changed for me in the past few years and it's simply something I can't afford to do. Luckily modelling is!! I'm very new to this but feel like I'm hooked or maybe obsessed is the better word haha. Thanks for reading guys!

Welcome to the Forums Charles!  Glad to have you aboard!

I too am hooked on modelng.  I've been hooked for 69 of my 75 years.  You name it and I've built it.  I build whatever strikes my fancy at the time (and my wallet says OK Wink).  Prefer WWII planes and trucks but if I like the looks of the kit, I'll build it.

Lots of the members on here started the same way you did, so you've come to the right place. Don't be afraid to ask questions.  The guys, and gals, are very knowledgeable and are ready, willing and able to help you with any questions/problems that you run into.  If you're building a plane, post in the aircraft sub-forum.  If it's a ship, post in the ship sub-forum etc..  When you get to painting and weathering, check out the painting sub-forum.  That's where I learned to use an airbrush.  I use mostly acrylic paints as they have easy clean-up and practically no smell (If the wife's happy...........).

So, sit back and enjoy. Don't forget to post pics of your builds so we can see how you're doing.

Welcome to the hobby and to the forum.  Lots of tips to be picked up by watching others build.  Don't be afraid to ask how something was done.

DittoEveryone. This is one of the friendliest forums on the net. Some others I found are kina clickish, but not here.
It sounds like you have had every trouble that befalls a modeler, except maybe slicing yourself with an xacto blade. There was a time when I was younger that I thought my thumbprint would be forever deformed because of the number of times I needed stiches. Now I just super glue the stupid cuts.
Ships aren’t so bad, they just take a lot of time and patience.

Ask any question you may have and someone, or many someone’s will be happy to answer.

Very cool story Charles. I just travelled the U.P. last year, have relatives there.

Model mostly aircraft but it's good to shake up your world once in a while with the occasional ship, tank or figure. Actually the new Tamiya Sherman tank got me back into it after a long layoff, really like that model.

Best of luck to you, hope to hear more of your adventures.

Hey Charles!

Welcome to the party! Model building is a great hobby and can be done as an individual pursuit without too much travel, unlike reenacting!! The Walker Bulldog is a good starter kit and if I remember correctly, the Tamiya kit goes together without too many problems.  There are so many great modelers here, you will surely learn a thing or two if you watch carefully.

Enjoy the forums and have a blast!

Welcome to the forum, Charles!  Like Fox said, I think you'll find that most if not all of us have a similar interest in history that drives us to build what we build, even if you build car models.  When I was a kid, my interest in history was sparked by listening to my uncles tell stories about their experiences in WWII, and I devoured all kinds of books, and my parents further encouraged me to build models.

It sounds like you've taken a dip into the next logical area, too, of working with the subjects in 1:1 scale.

I look forward to seeing your builds!

Best regards,

Brad
